Quite frankly, I feel the Anita Blake series started pretty good. But somehow it became all wrong along the way, IMO. Hot sex I can understand and enjoy, even ménage. But it was the gratuitious violence, the useless rapes that made me throw the books away (around volume 6 or 7). My friends didn't understand at first because I'd praised the series so much and they were reading the first novels by the time I dropped the whole thing. But once they got to the part that really pissed me off, they just felt the same and the books ended up in the trash.
That's sad, really, because that author had a really good start and it was so promising.

Awo (awosbooks) In a good -I CANT FREAKIN' WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK- way : Dreamfever by Karen Moning. Craziest cliffhanger ever. I literally threw it across the room once i realized that was the end. Thank god it was just a library copy and not my own hehe.

In a bad - WTF THIS BOOK IS BULLSHIT- way :
Breaking Dawn, I mean the book had potential ; an epic fight could have gone down but nooo everything was resolved peacefully and not one drop of blood was spilled like WTF. Not exactly epic. Worse way to end a book ever.

Ayana, you can't be throwing library books across the room. :)

message 104: by Awo (new)

Awo (awosbooks) Loool i knw i knw, I couldn't help myself, funny how after that book is the only book in the series I have to wait for, the previous four I devoured the same weekend.

I can't agree more about the end of Breaking Dawn Ayana.....total letdown. Also not a big fan of the whole Nessie plotline. I was like, where did this even come from?

message 107: by Galla (new)

Galla Agreed. When I heard there was a Breaking Dawn graphic novel in the works, I thought, "That will be the most horrifying graphic novel ever."

Your baby is an abomination... or maybe I want to marry her. Want to put me on diaper duty?

message 108: by ~Jennifer~ (new)

~Jennifer~ (book_addiction) Glad I'm not the only one. I'm not a huge fan of the whole Twilight saga. Vampires should be more "I'll rip out your throat!" and less "Let's talk about our feelings."

After you read it, you watch the movies and think "that's your MOM-in-law, dude".... or "No Bella, he's in love with your unfertilized egg".

I seriously already hated the character of Jacob Black, but Meyer actually made me not like him more.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) I just read a few reviews of Breaking Dawn. Wow. Can I have that time back?

Sandy Hyatt-James (sandyhyatt-james) Gem H aka *Dhelirious* wrote: "ooh and I did throw Twilightacross the room because it got SOOOO Slow!"

And surprisingly, badly written. I think Meyers only real triumph is that she chose a subject that just can't help but be romantic, ie a vampire who want so have sex but daren't, lest he kill the girl.

I remember thinking how much in love Jamie and Claire were and when they were parted, I really felt Claire's loss. That's the sign of a good writer.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) So, I found a free romance book via a group I belong to, Prescription For Love. http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/...

I downloaded and started reading. Gosh, I wasn't 2 chapters in before I wanted to toss the book against the wall. As per usual the female lead is “oh so attractive” but doesn’t realize it. The male character is “drawn to her” but she wants nothing to do with him. His response? Blackmail her into dating him! (My eyes are already rolling into the back of my head)

After they go out, he kisses her and she freaks out…why? Because she was raped by two men at gunpoint! Thank you, chapter 3. When she starts to go into detail about the way she was raped I was done. D.O.N.E. I’m just not down with a romance in which the plot mover is rape. Can we get past using rape as a story arc, please?? And I don’t want the image of what happened to this chick in my brain, why give me a blow by blow description? Shouldn’t she do that with a professional and not some guy who blackmailed her into dinner??

I want to review this DNF but the author is on GR and gave the book 5 stars. I don’t want to get into a “author behaving badly” moment, it would ruin my day. (Not that I know the author or know if she would do that, just that it seems to happen a lot in the romance world).

MrsJoseph, your reviews are your own. Write the review you wish to, and if the author wants to have a problem, just put her on ignore.

message 115: by Akaria (new)

Akaria Gale | 59 comments First of all, amen to using rape as plot device, character development or what have you. I'm done with it. Enough! A character can be stalked or beaten up or mauled by a bear and it can create just as much trauma. Why must authors go to the rape well over and over?

MrsJ, you write that review and author be damned. Reviews are for readers. As long as you don't stoop down to personal attacks you can be as negative as you want. If you thought the book was utter crap then you should say so.

I guess I'm just a little frustrated with the recent outbreaks of ABA on GR and in the blogosphere. Stop telling us how to review your book! It would be nice if people reviewed with courtesy and tact but anyone who's been on the internet more than twenty minutes knows better.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) You're right, of course Lady D. I follow Dear Author and there have been so many blow-ups lately that it makes me nervous. I shouldn't be but I am. I don’t even plan to publish a book ever but they get so nasty.

I can understand being nervous, but you should stand by your opinion as long as you're not atacking the author personally. I don't hold with reviewers who are deliberately mean toward authors in their reviews, but that's not the same as honestly writing about why you didn't like a book. I rarely give 1 star reviews, but I have, and I was clear about why I didn't like the book without putting the author down.

I don't have strong feelings against rape as a plot device personally, as long as it's handled tastefully and not gratuitously. In our society there is a lot of sexual violence against women and I can't believe in a fictional world that's supposed to be realistic, but doesn't have this. I don't think it should ever be glorified though. I can understand if some readers want to avoid it. I have my own things I don't like to read about.

Gemma (bookmoodreviews) | 241 comments Ok, reading Passion Unleashed and I am getting frustrated with it. I can't help comparing it with the BDB series and finding it lacking.

Also what is with the sudden explosion of groups of warrior books and the fact females must save them.... Where have all the original books gone???

Whoa there, lady. Where do you get off expecting good books with new and exciting plots? rotf

message 120: by AlbertaJenn (new)

AlbertaJenn I work in a bookstore, and often I want to throw books across the room when we get them in. Mainly just due to the "I can't believe we sell this crap" factor.

L.A. Candy (L.A. Candy, #1) by Lauren Conrad and A Shore Thing by Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi as examples.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) Are you serious?? Snooki has a book? I didn't think she could even read.

message 122: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (bookmoodreviews) | 241 comments I know I am expecting to much! Lol!

You have snookie! Us Brits have katie price aka Jordan. How she has managed to have half a dozen or more books is beyond me and that's not counting her six biographys.

Ally | 75 comments I threw a book across the room just last week. It was for Univeristy and was just a short story at 120 pages. It was The Castle of Otranto worst classic book I have ever read to date! It was very boring, silly and frustrating.

message 129: by Pam (new)

Pam | 13 comments You guy's have me looking for the "like" buttn, lol!

Every now and then I come across a book that I'd like to do more than just throw across the room, but the one that I'll never forget was a Stephen King novel, CUJO. I went into it knowing it was horror, but there are rules to this stuff, and King loves to break them. I didn't know this at the time. It's reallllly old so I don't think there are spoiler issues here. The boy dies. The WHOLE story is about this kid, he's not just part of a side story. Soooooo noooooot coooool!
I DID throw it, but I didn't beat it with a baseball bat and burn it, which was an idea I entertained.... REALLY!

message 130: by Arch (new)

Arch | 4247 comments Mod
lol Pam.

I'm not into horror movies or books, but I wanted to see Cujo, but never did. I might never see it.

Melanie (melaina) | 411 comments I think the only book I've tossed across the room was Sexy As Hell (Berkley Sensation) by Susan Johnson : I hated it with a fervor never equaled, lol!! If I recall my review is one big rant:-)
I also didn't like Sinjin (Rakehells of Rochester, #1) by Julia Templeton , but don't think I tossed it.. I HATE feeling like I wasted my time reading a book!

message 134: by Arch (new)

Arch | 4247 comments Mod
I haven't thrown a book yet Melanie.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) I forgot to mention this one! I didn't toss it because it was a library book. I was reminded (I'd forced myself to forget it) of it earlier today and just had to review it. Dangerous man, why are you nowhere to be found? I found that out that I need men who are in charge from this book.

Ritual of Proof - Here's my review:
"Imagine Regency England and the nobility of the ton. Now do some gender role-reversal. Take away everything you like about strong and confident men, add a little metrosexual to it. Now mix with a big bowl of man hymen.

Now you have Ritual of Proof.

Here's a more thorough review from someone who liked it: http://www1.epinions.com/review/Ritua...

And it's just as weird to read, lol. There this scene where he loses his virginity. The man servant doesn't like him so he drops a napkin over it - I think it's called a veil - and it hurts. I was like "huh?"

Oh, did I mention they have to be tied down to lose their virginity? So they don't hurt the lady.

message 145: by Zee (new)

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 688 comments Just felt like tossing this one at the wall yesterday. Instead I banged it on the bed, coz it was a library-borrowed book. The Charmer by Mandasue Heller

You get to the end and there's no resolution! It's like it's stopped right in the middle of the story. The heroine starts out strong and becomes a wishy-washy idiot once she meets the bloke who fleeces her of her inheritance. Gangs get thrown in as if just for the sake of showing the low life of modern Manchester. A character you root for is killed and his killer gets away scot-free and fleeces the heroine too by the end.

Sheesh - I'm not asking for HEA in all books, but at least some closure would be good!

I see it more as "agressive" instead of "abusive." Abuse is never okay in a romance. But a man going after what he wants is something totally different. JMHO.
