janine | 7709 comments i had a pretty good book buying year, considering i didn't really have money to buy books. most of my books this year came from the thrift store.

i bought 31 books, i borrowed 43 books and i was gifted 8 books (and i'm expecting one more book gift for christmas). that makes 81 (in a week 82) books total. considering i've read 90 books so far this year that makes me pretty much even. enormous to-read piles (i have 11 books to read now) scare me so i'm happy i didn't go overboard with my book buying habit.

how many books did you buy this year?

message 2: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments Looks like I only read about 14 books for myself. Some years are heavier reading years than others. How many did I buy? Maybe twenty-something.

message 3: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I had stopped buying books for such a long time. Years I think. But I fell off the wagon this year. It started with swap, so I wasn't paying full price. But that was just a gateway drug. Now I'm even buying books I've already read because I found a cover I liked better than the one I own. The number of amazon boxes on my doorstep over the past few weeks has been embarrassing.

message 4: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesslie) I am ashamed to say. Not sure really, must be more than 60 or 70ish. Oh Lord, I'm one of those crazy hoarder people aren't I?

message 5: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments I think 14 or 15, not that many but enough to keep me busy.

message 6: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Not many...maybe six...got most of them from the library.

Example, please, Smetchie...

Little Bee right Smetch?

message 9: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments A lot of what I read, I get through work, so I don't have to pay for the books. Probably I bought about 10 books this year on my own. I've also been using the library more and more.

message 10: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Little Bee. Right. That I did audio but then bought the book anyway. Also bought Lonesome Dove twice.

message 11: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Was it just the cover or the edition? Sometimes I'll buy another edition of a book is the text and size is easier to read. But that's pretty rare, only long books with which I want to spend a lot of time.

message 12: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) less than 10 and probably 5 of those were gifts. I primarily use the library. I usually pick up one or two books that I really loved or by an author with whom I have some sort of connection. ;)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I don't even know. 50 to 60 maybe? Most of them in ebook form. I did a quick count of books sitting on my shelf in here and it looks like I purchased 19 in print form, and 11 of those were used.

Even with that, I made a lot of use out of my library. Libraries are awesome. I even started downloading audiobooks from the library to my computer to load as mp3s to a player.

Since I gained access to some ARC galley sites and got an industry insider tip on a place to get a ton of free ebooks, I haven't been making as many purchases because I'm able to find a lot of what I want for free.

message 14: by Tanya (new)

Tanya | 5 comments Some people start eating a lot when they are sad, but this year I found out that I just buy lots and lots of books. After my boyfriend broke up with me I bought about thirty books in 3 weeks time. In all about 65, maybe 70.

message 15: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments I purchased 15 or so in print, another 15 on e-book.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Barb wrote: "20-25 ... mostly new. I don't spend my money on much of anything else, so I don't feel the least bit guilty about it."

Yeah, I hear you on this one. I don't play golf. I don't want an expensive car. I don't buy many of the "toys" associated with guys. So if I buy a book, I don't feel guilty much.

message 17: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I'm not sure how many I bought. Let's see... around 10 books and roughly the same ebooks.

I totally do that too.

Yep. Just the cover. Its lovely with silver spots for the stars.

Leslie, to make you feel better, you bought half as many books as I did. I bought 147, and don't want to know how many I mooched or got from the library. *bright red with embarrassment*

I acquired 194 books this year (so far). The vast majority of those were bought used. Some were acquired for free. Some were gifts.

I can sympathize. I don't usually do that myself, but if I'm in a used bookstore and I see something I want but with a super ugly cover, I'll hold out until they get an edition with a better cover. There are several Willa Cathers I won't buy because the cover designs are SO EFFING UGLY. I will wait until someone donates their vintage Vintage Willa Cathers from the 60s and 70s.

message 24: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart What are toys associated with guys?

message 25: by Carol (new)

Carol | 1678 comments Hmm, I don't keep track. I got rid of 50 or so in our yard sale. I probably bought 25. Does anyone keep track using Goodreads somehow?

message 26: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
It would be easy to do that, Carol - you could make a shelf just for books bought or acquired. I've been doing it in a spreadsheet for years.

message 27: by Carol (new)

Carol | 1678 comments I will do that for 2011, thanks!

You can also designate any book as owned by you, or not (this is done inside the review popup). Within your owned books you can designate any available for swap.

message 30: by Annette (new)

Annette Hart | 172 comments I've bought loads - but mostly for other people, especially my eldest daughter! Fortunately, I bought a book for both my mum and my sister on a 3 for 2 deal and got one for myself, (a nice Christmassy romance, perfect for being snowed in!)

Heh. Maybe. I do like a clean typeface...

message 32: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments I did go to the library quite a bit, too, but I tend not to get books I don't intend to read all the way through. My favorites to get from libraries are cookbooks. I take them home and copy recipes. Mind you, it's not like I don't have three shelves of cookbooks anyhow, although I got rid of quite a few this year.

In fact, I suppose I should be happy that I went through my shelves and got rid of a bunch, about four times more than I bought. I am a rereader, though, so that's tough for me to do. I have regretted getting rid of things before.

message 33: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments Roughly 50, but most of them were from the used bookstore.

message 34: by Joan (new)

Joan Tanyà (marcuse) | 3 comments I've bought 24 books so far this year, of which 21 are ebooks. I usually read an average of two books a month and I admit that I'm hooked on my kindle.

message 35: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1106 comments I'm reading all your comments, and looking at the numbers, and I can't help but be amazed. All of those are just this year? And I thought I was a freaky book-addict.

message 36: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments i just saw i didn't count the books i boughts as gifts, so i'll have to add ten more.

message 37: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments Bought 25 books for myself this year. Use the library for most of my books. rejoined 2 book clubs by mail this year.

message 38: by Clara (new)

Clara | 25 comments I am so ashamed. I see you guys bought 20-25 books except forLobstergirl who is close to my numbers. I can't tell you guys. But I dare say over 200 books. Most of them I got on sale at Borders and at the end of this year, I discovered that I could buy at the Salvation Army for 50 cents and 1.00 buck. Therefore last week alone I got 26 books at SA and at Borders 5 which is not bad. Yet I have so many books that I just haven't touched yet from last year. This addiction is way way too much.

message 39: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments Look, if you read and have the space, don't feel bad about it. They're BOOKS. It's not like you're smoking crack.

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I think I bought 15 or so. I gave a few away and donated a few to the Book Thing. I've been trying to come out even, so if I buy a book, another has to go.

I have bought A LOT Of books since Christmas.

message 42: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments my sister & her husband gave me a gift certificate to Walmart. 1 cheap bookcase coming up.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I've been trying very hard NOT to buy books this year. I still have two boxes full of books waiting to go to Half-Price Books. The last two, yay!

But I'd guess I still bought 10-15. I know I bought Mockingjay, and the last Girl Who book, and The Maze Runner, and I went to Powell's and couldn't help buying Lips Touch: Three Times because it was just sooooo pretty...

message 44: by Tina (new)

Tina Green (glaciertina) | 2 comments so besides purses i'm not sure i can count how many i bought this year alone. i am just not scanning them all into good reads since i bought a book scanner. an estimate of bought books i'd 60+, its a good thing we have a used book store that sells them cheap. but i still have to have my new releases so it adds up. its awesome to see so many people love books as much as i do. Cheers

message 45: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Welcome, Tina!

message 46: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalee) | 749 comments I've probably bought close to 125 this year... I was just reviewing my Amazon purchases for 2010 and was blown away by the amount of packages I must have received from them. About 4 months ago a dollar bookstore opened a few blocks from my work! It has been helpful(?) because I can zip in there at lunch and buy three books for less than a magazine costs!

Welcome Tina. I'm interested in the book scanner you purchased. Does it scan them to ebook format to be used with one of electronic readers?

message 49: by Lori (new)

Lori Since July I've stayed clear of the book section in GoodWill, because frankly I felt like I was spending more time looking for books when I could be reading the hundreds I've accumulated at home. I've picked up just a few at Costco. I'm behaving.

message 50: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart So I'm not the only one who does that??? good
