Well, if you take that figuratively then take the "man shall not lie with another man as they do with a woman" figuratively.

Honestly, a lot of things in the Bible confuse me, and I don't know what everything means. If you don't want to believe in it, that's your choice and everything, but I just try to live my life based on what I believe. I personally feel convicted that God doesn't want me to be in a homosexual relationship, but I don't feel convicted that God doesn't want me to wear fabric blends. That's what I believe. That God wants us to do our best to understand what we can and live for him. It's not just a big set of rules we all need to follow to the letter.

I don't think it should be illegal to get married to another man or woman, because everybody can make their own decisions and our laws shouldn't be based on a religion anyways. Muslim people have their own laws too and we aren't making laws based on them. Same goes with Satanists. I mean, religious laws and political laws should be completely different.

So do I believe in gay marriage? No. But do I believe it should be illegal? Nope.

That sounds totally reasonable to me, but I don't quite understand what you mean by you don't believe in gay marriage but believe it should be legal.

Lavipoo hi I love you.

I respect what you believe in. My issue is, like you said, when religion gets in the way of politics. If someone isn't for gay marriage, then that's what they believe. But it has no place in government.

I don't think that gay marriage is right in God's eyes and I would never get married to a girl, but I don't think that the government should make it illegal because it's each individual's personal choice.

message 812: by Acacia (new)

Acacia (acaciaa) Oh, I see. It was the "I would never get married to a girl" part that was confusing me, because you don't have to want to have a gay marriage to believe in gay marriage. But I gotcha.

I think that's a really reasonable stance, by the way, and very refreshing. Out of pure curiosity: how old are you?

Yeah, sorry. Sometimes when I say things they only make sense in my own head.

I'm 15.

message 814: by Acacia (new)

Acacia (acaciaa) Ah, okay. I have no real sense of how old anyone in this group is. At first I thought you were younger than me but then I had a feeling you were older. I turn 15 in a month.

message 815: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
Yeah, it's quite hard to tell how old people are sometimes. Woah, really? I always thought you were older than me or about the same age. Although, I guess you are basically the sameish age.

What Acacia said, basically. It really bugs me when people are like, Gay marriage is wrong because I believe in it therefore everyone else should agree with me/my religion/whatever. But, yeah, I like your perspective.

She wasn't bashing Christianity. She was bashing the uneven ways people interpret the bible.

Emily, just a question. I don't care about your personal convictions about whether or not gay marriage should be legal. But, why do you care whether or not it's a law?

message 838: by Isaac (new)

Isaac | 8014 comments Honestly, I don't care if it's a law or not. There really aren't any Christian countries. Gays have just the as many rights as others; I just don't think that being gay is right, nor should we just tell everyone that it's right.

What bothers me, though, is that the governor didn't do it because he thought it was okay. He only did it so he would have more voters for when he ran for next term.

Just because /you/ don't think being gay is right doesn't mean the rest of the country subscribes to your beliefs. Gay people do NOT have just as many rights. They cannot get married in most states. That is not equal. That goes directly against the constitution.

message 840: by Amy (new)

Amy (runawaymarbles) | 1017 comments Holden said: My perspective: Laws are made to protect the innocent. That's their only purpose. That's why drinking alchol isn't illegal: because the only person you're harming is yourself. (Unless you get in a car, in which case, it IS illegal). So, my conclusion, who does it harm to marry someone of your own gender? I'm not gay, but I have a friend who is, and really, he's no diffirent than any of my other friends. Again, if it's not hurting anyone: do what you want. Don't try to tell me who to marry, and I won't try to tell you.

And I can't offer much insight on the Religious side of this debate (though because of the First Ammendment, it should have absolutely no standing). But my one thought on it is echoed by the words of a senator from (I think) Wisconsin, during a gay marriage debate (which failed; despite the etiquette-breaking standing ovation the senator recieved after his speech): "How many more gays does God have to create before we are convinced that he actually wants them around?"

That's basically what I think, only a lot more intelligent sounding.

What I find funny is that poeple get so worked up about people wanting to marry other people. It's not like we refuse to let obese people marry because they'll produce obese children and lead the country to an obesity epidemic.

...That only really makes sense in my head, doesn't it.
