2011 Create-Your-Own Reading Challenge

Duration: Jan 1, 2011 – Dec 31, 2011
Number of Books: 30 non-fiction & 15 “smart” fiction
Challenge Description: I have a bunch of books on my to-read list that I keep putting off in favor of more entertaining and easily-approached romance novels. This year, in preparation for going back to school and to finally get these off my list, I want to read more of the anthropology, social justice, and environmental non-fiction I keep adding to my TBR list and some of the more intellectual fiction I really want to read but keep putting off because I’ve got to know what happens to the hero’s seriously hot but damaged & reserved best friend in the next book of the series! And just in case anyone’s worried this challenge won’t be enjoyable for me, rest assured I have no problem tossing a book aside & crossing it off the list if I don’t like it after the first 50 pages (also, a lot of the non-fiction has fewer than 200 pp.).
List of Books: (more to be added)
Non-fiction:
1. 29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life
2. Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future
3. Doing Faithjustice
4. Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader
5. Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in a Global Age
6. Indian Givers: How the Indians of the Americas Transformed the World
7. Infections and Inequalities: The Modern Plagues
8. Jesus and the Disinherited
9. Liberation Theology: An Introductory Guide
10. Love and Honor in the Himalayas: Coming to Know another Culture
11. My Patients were Zulus
12. On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society
13. A People's Ecology: Explorations in Sustainable Living
14. Reading Lolita in Tehran
15. Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time
16. Unexpected News: Reading the Bible with Third World Eyes
17. The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales
18-30 – to be decided
“Smart”:
1. Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres
2. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
3. The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley
4. Kartography by Kamila Shamsie
5. Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
6. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
7. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kessey
8. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruis Zafon
9. Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho
10. The Zahir by Paulo Coelho
11-15 To be decided

LOL, Mrs.soule! I've read the following from your list:
15. Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time
2. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
6. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
I really loved Three Cups & 451. Never Let Me Go was a tough book but good too.

0/5,000 pts
Duration: January 1, 2011 - December 31, 2011
Goal: 5,000 pts. (this could be 15 to 50 books depending on points)
Challenge Description: This would work like a membership rewards program but instead of getting points for buying stuff, I'd get them for reading books. :) Books would earn points depending on how long they have been on my TBR (the oldest, the most points), how many pages they have (the most pages, the most points) and what # in the series they are (the later in the series, the most points.) I'll start with 5,000 pts. and if I reach that, then I'll add more points to the challenge. And before you wonder how I'll calculate that, just know that I already have an Excel spreadsheet that makes the calculations automatically. Point System as follows:
Added to TBR in:
2011 = 0 pts./2010 = 100 pts./2009 = 150 pts. etc. until 2007 = 250 pts.
PLUS pts. # of Pages:
-400 = 0 pts./401-500 = 50 pts./501-600 = 100 pts. etc. until 901+ = 300 pts.
PLUS # in Series:
1 = 0 pts./2 = 25 pts./3 = 50 pts., etc.
dnf* = 25 pts.
* Must be either a book with 401+ pgs or added to TBR in 2010 or earlier

The point system is easier to understand if I put everything in individual lines but I didn't want to take the space. For instance:
2010 = 100 pts.
2009 = 150 pts.
2008 = 200 pts.
2007 = 250 pts.
401-500 pgs: 50 pts.
501-600 pgs: 100 pts
Etc.
I hold challenges like these on PBS where players compete for prizes so I'm sort of used to this system. Also, I already made up a spreadsheet that calculates the points once I input the info so figuring out the points should be a breeze. :)

Nope. No points.

What's a pleasure, Jane?"
Reading the book for no points.. :)

I'm curious to know how many books would take me to get to 5000 pts. I think I can do that in less than a year (I'd say 8 month tops) but because I don't know how many books with no points, would stand in my way, I'm trying to be conservative. :)

Just did that math - ignoring number of pages, you would earn 5,775 points! Imagine reading JR Robbs 'In Death' series!! LOL!

Buried In The Book Club
0/12
I crashed and burned on the challenge I set myself last year. But one of my New Years Resolutions for 2011 is to join the local book club (I have to get out of the house and meet people!!), which meets on the first tuesday of each month. So my challenge for 2011 is to read the book each month (and attend the meeting)!
January - An Evening of Long Goodbyes by Paul Murray
February - Independent People by Halldór Laxness

I'm using 2007 because that's the year I joined GR and believe it or not I still have books from when I joined. This month I read the first book I added to my GR TBR...too bad I thought of the challenge until after I read the book!
Here's my handy-dandy spreadsheet if you are curious! I already added two of the big books I'm planning to read in January:

My goal for 2011 is that at LEAST 250 books that I read will be those that are physically in my possession prior to 12/31/2010. To that end, I am trying to get them all on my TBR shelves on GR, so that I can see where the end of the tunnel will be! (UPDATE: As of 12/31/2010, I have 425 books physically in my possession on my TBR. There are more ebooks unread that aren't listed, but that's close enough for now!)
