yeah I found this book very hard to finish. It took me over three month to read it through. I know others who have finished it in days. I guess it appeals to some but not others. I don't think it deserves all the success it got.

I actually watched the movie first. I was very confused, but it made reading the first book a lot easier. The second and the third book in the series were a must for me to read.

which book would you say was the best of the three ?

Yosiemond muswar Need extra effort to read about first 100 pages. after that the story gradually become more interesting. I already read 2 books. having the 3rd book but not read it yet coz i know i will get another 100 pages boring story.

message 255: by Krista (new) - rated it 5 stars

Krista Insogna I zipped through it! keep reading, you won't regret it.

message 256: by Debra (new) - rated it 3 stars

Debra If you can get through the first 100 pages or so, it will definitely pick up and start making sense to you. Also, it helped me to ignore the peoples names in the beginning until they became more regular characters and there was more interaction with them. Otherwise I found it hard to distinguish who was who.

Karen What a colossal disappointment this book was! Way too long, with just one sort of interesting character. I can see, however, where, with a lot of work, it might make movie that some people would like.

Diane Ivy wrote: "Ok, I have had this book for months and continue to try to get through it but I just can't seem to get through the second chapter. I keep hearing from everyone its great, but you have to first get ..."

Maybe it's just not for you. It's okay to quit reading a book. Just because everyone seems to love it doesn't mean that you will. It's more worth your time and effort to read something you'll love.

message 259: by Huw (new) - rated it 4 stars

Huw Evans It IS a slow burner to begin with, but patience will pay dividends. The density of the first 150 pages suddenly becomes much looser and the plot starts to roll. Without the preliminary the rest of the trilogy will not hold any meaning. Please persist (this is from personal experience) - it is worth it.

Craig Ivy wrote: "Ok, I have had this book for months and continue to try to get through it but I just can't seem to get through the second chapter. I keep hearing from everyone its great, but you have to first get ..."

Um, read them?

Jordan Not nearly as good as the first two. Even the ending for me felt underwhelming. Was happy to finish the series but felt a little let down at the same time

Jeannette Katzir Here is the trick . . . you need to trudge through the first 100 pages, THEN it gets good, but I have to warn you the ending is very unsatisfying. Hope I wasn't a spoiler.

message 263: by Jiri (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jiri To be honest, the first book is my favorite from the series. The beginning (100-120 pages) is a bit slower but it sets background for 3 separate stories of which 2 of them are solved towards the end. That is what kept me reading.

Luke Heatherington Ivy wrote: "Ok, I have had this book for months and continue to try to get through it but I just can't seem to get through the second chapter. I keep hearing from everyone its great, but you have to first get ..."

I promised myself i would read two chapters a day. I kept myself to that goal and by the third day I couldn't put it down. It's such an amazing read!

message 265: by Nicole (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nicole I also had a hard time getting through it. Its a good book but slow going. So are the other 2 in the trilogy

message 266: by Huw (new) - rated it 4 stars

Huw Evans It has become known as the Millenium trilogy consisting the girl with the dragon tattoo, the girl who played with fire and the girl who kicked a hornet's nest. It is such a huge pity that Stieg Larssen died so young - does anybody know if he had other books planned?

message 267: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee there was rumor he had plans for another 7 books (I had heard). Who would have thought that climbing stairs could kill you - because he died from a heart attack after doing that

message 268: by Nicole (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nicole Didn't know that, how interesting. I wish he could have written more the book left some lose ends.

Laura-nassidesa Eschbaugh Ivy wrote: "Ok, I have had this book for months and continue to try to get through it but I just can't seem to get through the second chapter. I keep hearing from everyone its great, but you have to first get ..."

I did push through and finished the book then threw it away. There is way too much gratuitous violence and sex. It may sell books but it does not make for good reading. I would say don't waste your time.

message 270: by Connie (new) - rated it 4 stars

Connie I found the first book in this series the most exciting. This isn't a genre I generally read however, when my brain tires of reading more demanding books, I want to relax with something that provides pure entertainment--something I don't have to think much about. I did think these books were quite intelligent and absorbing enough, and I have recommended them to others. There are times when I set aside the critic in me and just take things at face value; all I want is for the writer to take me away to another place, to be taken along for the ride without analyzing, or having to think much about what lessons lie within the lines and pages. For these reasons, I think Stieg Larsson did a fine job and I'm sorry that he's not around today to hone his craft because I would have looked forward to more from this guy.

message 271: by Kathee (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kathee I found it hard to get into. People kept telling me to read the first fifty pages and you'll be hooked. I did and I was. I wish the gory parts weren't so graphic, but it was a great read, I thought.

message 272: by Amy (new) - rated it 2 stars

Amy Couldn't get into the book. The writing style was just not my cup of tea.

Dasmith Ivy wrote: "Ok, I have had this book for months and continue to try to get through it but I just can't seem to get through the second chapter. I keep hearing from everyone its great, but you have to first get ..."

Read the first one but couldn't get through the second. Just couldn't take anymore of the perverted violence.

message 274: by Kaye (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kaye It's very hard to get through the first third of book after that there is no turning back. There is so much character background info up front it makes it difficult but worth staying with it.

message 275: by Huw (new) - rated it 4 stars

Huw Evans I agree that the violence is very graphic but it is written in such an low key style that you can almnost miss it. If anything, this makes it more emotionally intense and it is integral to the trilogy. The whole writing style is masterfully understated.

message 276: by Nora (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nora in the beginning i found it really boring therefore it was hard for me to get through it. i skipped most of the book up till the middle-ish end where the good parts were.

Monique Vernon Henryetta wrote: "I, too, found it difficult to get thru the first 100 pages. The financial part could have been shortened to make a better read. The Swedish movie did just that and the viewer didn't miss a thing!"

Monique Vernon I disagree! The financial part is essential to the plot. Without it the plot becomes unbelievable and then there is none of the subversive politics and depth to the novel. The movie was very good, but missed so much of the essence of the writer and of the government plot. Have you seen all three movies? I can't wait to see if the new american movie does a better job on the production. And of course Daniel Craig is easy on the eyes. ;)

Jessica I would have to say keep going, like everyone else. I tried not to understand too much of the financial and contextual information in the first couple of chapters, so that I got through the boring bits preety quickly and was still able to pick up the context of the characters from later chapters. If you just enjoy the first chapters for the writing itself, rather than treating it like a factual textbook you will continue to read the book and discover the excitement it has to offer later on!

message 280: by ???!!! (new) - rated it 5 stars

???!!! I finished John Theorin's "Echoes from the Dead" yesterday and find it captivating. I find many similarities between this book and Larrson's "Girl w/ Dragon Tattoo",to be honest, I think it could even be better. It may not be such a thriller and may not involved a grand scale of a story,a girl with "super powers", but ordinary and broken peoples' relentless and tenacity are equally amazing.

message 281: by Joseph (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joseph Devon I found myself slogging through the first hundred pages, but after that the word "slogging" doesn't begin to describe the effort it took to continue reading. I got exquisite details about what people were putting on their sandwiches and bland summary of everything else. Hooray? Plus I found it difficult to swallow a character like Salandar who is both severely introverted, even hinted at as having Asperger's Syndrome, but then suddenly is able to act like a James Bond super-spy con-artist. No. No no no.

I have no idea why people go bonkers for this book.

Kristaluce Great read.....the first 50-75 pages are BORING!!! Stick with it, you won't be sorry!!

Kevin R. It took a little to get going, but once it did, wow, an excellent book.

message 284: by Emily (new) - rated it 4 stars

Emily It was really really hard to get into until about page 300. It is worth it to keep reading though it is so good. The others are much easier to read.

message 285: by Teresa (new) - rated it 1 star

Teresa I stopped reading after 25 pages, the minimum I require myself to read before ditching a new text, because it was one of the most boring books I've "read" in years. No idea why the hype on this series.

message 286: by Tim (new) - rated it 1 star

Tim Sorry, tried to read this after hearing all the hype but abandoned it after about a hundred pages. I hope whoever found it on my train seat enjoyed it better than I did.

well the hype is about the series not on the first 25 pages...

Although I did push through and finish, I found it not worth the push. This is a great read for a lot of my friends, but I found myself less than fascinated by the supposedly fascinating characters. Sorry. Not much help.

Definitely could NOT get into this book... not happy I bought the e-book ... moving on.. so many other great books to read!

Kathy nope... waste of time for me!

message 293: by Yuliya (new) - rated it 3 stars

Yuliya by Mickey: Yes Ila, I loved the book as well, but I oftened wondered how many cups of coffee can a person drink...
Yea, we drink a lot of coffee in Europe. My American co-workers also noticing that by my coffee consumation at work :0

message 294: by Ruthie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ruthie Pennington Super hard to get into and then BAM, hooked! Once you get to the middle it totally sucks you in and you have to keep going on the rest of them. I was thinking the same thing when I started "why did my mom suggest these???" then once I got going on them I was up at all hours of the night during school because I couldn't put them down. Totally worth it if you can get throught the first half of the first one, the others jump right in!

Liv Chanin Ivy wrote: "Ok, I have had this book for months and continue to try to get through it but I just can't seem to get through the second chapter. I keep hearing from everyone its great, but you have to first get ..."

This book has been so hyped up...I have heard the same thing about having to "get though" the first half of the book. I quit about 60 pages in, because I realized, hey! reading is supposed to be enjoyable. Why read something that you have to "get through?" I did enough of that in college.

message 296: by Ruthie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ruthie Pennington The only reason I am glad I stuck this one out and listened to everyone saying to "get through" the first 1/2 is because there is two and a half books of pure enjoyment once you get through those first few hours! Trust me, totally worth it.

Well, I have heard that the second book is exceptional.

Jaye Latts I found it difficult to follow the whole Vanger family tree, but I still enjoyed this entire trilogy. I actually made a point of reading them slowly, savouring every word/sentence/etc... I had watched the original films, first, though. These books read like the movies - very rich and satisfying. Now I want to read them again! Excuse me...

Katherine I never had any problem getting into these books--loved the story right from the start. I will admit that the Scandinavian names were a bit difficult to keep straight but then again Wuthering Heights was name confusing and don't get me started on the Russians. Loved the Swedish movies, which I watched after reading the book but have absolutely no interest in the Daniel Craig version

message 300: by Deb (new) - rated it 2 stars

Deb I didnt enjoy this book at all...Its so hard to read..the movie looks good..maybe if I see the movie i can try to reread the book!! Grrrr
