IT STARTS OFF SO SLOW AND BORING BUT IF U CAN DEAL WITH THAT ,THEN THE BOOKS R ACTUALLY A GREAT READ
i found the entire book boring. it took me forever to finish. totally not worth the time i wasted reading it. yawn.
This is one of those books that leaves with with a profound sense of accomplishment after you finish reading it. It is a slog, but it has a good story.
Finally I've proved it myself..After the first 50 pages, I couldn't put the book down..
I finish the entire book in 1 day..
Great story..
Now I can't wait to read the girl who played with fire..
Lisbet and Mikael they're awesome!!

Congratulations; the others are much less daunting!
I actually struggled through the first 100 pages or so, but overall it was an interesting story. I just find it so hard to believe this book became a best-seller given the fact that many of us found it to be WORK to get through the first 1/3rd or half of the book. If you like Larsson's style, you need to check out EQUITY of EVIL. A friend read a blog that compared the authors and intensity of the stories. Actually was much better!
Joy H. wrote: "Carol mentioned the unfamiliar names. I can't stand it when too many characters are introduced at once without any character development. I also don't like being flooded with proper names and place..."While it doesn't annoy me, it can take me out of the book (which I guess can be annoying?). I think it becomes a problem when you read a book and have pronounced one repeating name 5 different ways. That's exactly what I did with this book.
My suggestion is to watch the Swedish movies on Amazon Prime (subtitled) - which is free if you have a Prime account. That helps you get through the book. The second and third book are much easier - I don't think you'll have that problem with those.
Yeah, get through the boring first 100 pages then the novel picks up. I admit, it took me a while to finish it too.I have seen both the Swedish version of the film and the American one. But I have yet to read the 2nd and 3rd books...and I work at a bookstore where I see them everyday...maybe one of these days...
I think that as you keep going the storie(s) keep getting more intriging. Before I even finished the second book I went in search of the third.

Once it start gaining speed it does not end until you finish the whole series. And it is worth it:)
I picked up this book and put it down several times before I was hooked, and then.....wow! The translation from Swedish to English was awkward and the names! Oh my.....but keep on reading and it will be worth it. By the time I got to the third book, I devoured it. Keep on keeping on!!!!
I found the first 300 pages were the hardest and then the book took off. You'll know the part when you get to it.
I seriously agree with Ila about the 1st hundred pages. Definitely worth sticking it out, especially when you go on to the 2nd & 3rd books.
I thought the book was hard to get into as well, but unlike everyone else, i was actually kind of unimpressed with the rest of it. The pacing did pick up and the story became more interesting, but i really didn't think it was all that good or original. The main story line with the locked room mystery was predictable, and the main character was way too flat. Salander was interesting and different, but flat too. Also the ending was way too drawn out, i was actually rooting for the last page just to be finished with it. Needless to say i decided not to read the other 2.
Kelsey wrote: "This is the ONLY book I have ever read where I finished it, watched the movie and preferred the movie. I have no idea what was lost in translation but finishing this was arduous..."I actually enjoyed the book better, and thought the movie, while good, was rather slow and boring compared. Funny though. I didn't love either, but both were really good and recommendable.
My only book/movie combo where I preferred the movie was "The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas"
Blou4432 wrote: "When I first started reading this book, it was not what I expected and that, predictably, caused a bit of a delay. However, it did not take long to get into the story after that. The trilogy itself..."Spoiler much? Please edit with Spoiler warning...
I didn't have trouble reading the beginning. It was the graphic violence at the end that bothered me. It was so bad that I knew I would not want to see the movie, nor did I want to read the rest of the books.
Ivy wrote: "Ok, I have had this book for months and continue to try to get through it but I just can't seem to get through the second chapter. I keep hearing from everyone its great, but you have to first get ..."Ivy, I didn't find it difficult to get through at all in the first book, wait till the third one and you'll see its much more difficult to do....I think you just have to commit to doing it, once you do you will find it to be one of the best books you have ever read...It's one of my favorites!
Cici wrote: "lol! Yes, I loved the girl with the dragon tattoo and the girl who played with fire, but it took me forever to read them. Now, I'm on the last one and yet again it's difficult to get through. Once ..."Cici, you are right, the third installment was by far the hardest read, I felt as though they were cramming way to much in the storyline and at times I found it hard to follow, but did enjoy the series as one of the best series I have read!
I found it a little slow going at first, but once I got the character's down and wrapped my mind around the fact that it's in a completely unfamiliar place to me, I was able to get into the story a lot more. I ended up really loving the book.
you can skim through that & still get the idea. I skimmed through a lot of the tedious descriptions throughout the whole book & didnt miss any of the meat of the story.
I just put down one I couldnt get throw. I tried a bunch of times even skipped a little bit and just couldnt get interested in it. Everything about it made me think id like it, but nope. Sometimes you just gotta give up. Girl wuth Dragon Tatto was one no matter how hard I tried couldnt get through first chapter no matter how many ppl said it was good
I've found it hard to get through, not because it wasn't interesting, or hard to read, but because of it's explicity. All the violence described seemed very real and terrifying.
I had the same trouble with it. But as soon as I got to around page 200 I couldn't put it down. All of the facts and names seem to come together at the end. I also read the second book and the pace for that one is much better. But with the 3rd book I just said screw it and watched the movie.
it was a hard series to get through, a little slow in parts, but i really ended up liking it when i finished. the first book is the hardest to get into.
I found it really hard to get started with this book, and honestly I just read it because there was a lot of pressure around me to get to it, I have to say it was not quite the plot that made it difficult for me (I actually liked the idea of someone mysteriously vanishing from an island, but the characters, I just think they are way too unreal and just was not able to actually start liking any of them, so I really couldn't care less what their fates could be. That said, I must admit I got through second and third books out of a sense of accomplishment rather than a liking for them. It really made people around me very angry, so I though I was the only one who hadn't liked the series, glad to find out I'm not.
I had a terrible time getting into this book. I heard all these great reviews on it, and thought there must be something wrong with me. It seemed very slow and dry in the beginning and got better as it progressed.
After many months, I have finally managed to get to the end of this book. The story only started getting interesting towards the middle of the book but, I have to admit that it was worth the read.
The first half of the book is tough to get through. I thought it was very good after that. Each of the sequel books are better. The final book (Hornets Best) is excellent I think.
I read it once, didnt understand a thing! Now I am going back after seeing both the swedish and American versions!

The names and characters were difficult to process, but seeing the movies put them more into perspective.

It's really hard to get into at the beginning but if you actually take your time and trek through the boring parts it gets pretty good about half-way through. It's one of my favourite series.
Ivy wrote: "Ok, I have had this book for months and continue to try to get through it but I just can't seem to get through the second chapter. I keep hearing from everyone its great, but you have to first get ..."The first half of the book is extremely dry. Unless you are planning to win some sort of award for most knowledgable about the Vanger Clan.
All can offer is that which you have already heard... it gets better in the middle. Or just quit while you are ahead and watch the movie. The movie was a really good adaption of the book and leaves out a bunch of the useless parts, while still capturing the book really well.
I have a friend that says the rest of the series is much better and does not drag on in the beginning like the first book. She also mentioned that book one is pretty stand alone. Meaning you can watch the movie, get the gist and read books 2 and 3 and be a much happier person. :)
There was a bunch of material in there about Swedish history and politics, business and culture. But it wasn't presented in a way which was interesting to non-swedes. Thus, there were large sections of the book which were painful to read for non-Swedes.
The first part of the book was really hard to get through- but once you got through it, i couldn't put it down. it was a very interesting read. after that i had to read the second book and the third. As for the movie- i liked the swedish movie version better than the american version.
I have had this book on my kindle for SO long and can not get through it. I finally gave up and added it to the Can not finish shelve :(
Once I hit chapter 5, things got MUCH better in this book. The second book was my favorite of the 3 because it immediately got off to a good start. But the last book was another slow starter, taking about 1/3 of the book to get into any real action. All three books eventually hooked me.
