What are you reading at the moment?

Started
for the July group read and also have
from the library checked out. Finally making a dent into my TBR list this summer! Never been happier :)
Finished Fifty Shades of Grey and I need to go back to my usual mysteries before I go into the 2nd book. I'm not into the romance/erotica thing so much so reading it back to back will make me bored lol. Just picked up Trail Of Blood by Lisa Black. I was pretty disappointed with her last book so I'm hoping this one is better!!
I seem to have hit a wall. I've been reading for a challenge but so far three of the books I chose to read haven't chosen me and now I wonder if I can find a book to suit my mood or the challenge. Oh well, I'm halfway finished with Warmth of Other Suns and have some thought which I will sahre with you when I finish the book.

I'm still reading A Thousand Splendid Suns (and loving it), The Kite Runner is next on my list now.
I just started reading Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. I read this book when it first came almost 20 years ago. I'm reading again to see if it still holds up and how much have I changed since I read it all those years ago. I wonder do other readers go back and re-read books from their past to see how much have they changed or did they changed at all.
Usually I only read a book once because I don't usually like to take the experience and mindset it put me in and change it. I like the magic of books that it is a memory of a time that I read it and therefore it is an experience that happened and has with it the memory due to when I read it. I am currently finishing up
on Kindle finally (been reading this in spurts) and then going to try and give
a go again. It is hard for me to get into that book for sure but since it is the monthly choice for this group I decided to get it from library and try it. So far, another 1 star book choice unfortunately for me.

The Kite Runner is one of my fav books of all time!
Literally finished Schuyler's Monster: A Father's Journey with His Wordless Daughter on Kindle about 5 minutes ago. Now picking up Catch 22 again. Slow read but hoping to finish it to get it out of the way for the discussion in this club.
I am currently reading Darkness, Take My Hand. I wanted to start A Feast for Crows. But I dont want to finish the series yet. I feel very attached to all the characters. lol
I've just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns, and loved it! Slightly surprising myself as I tend not to be a great lover of books that make it to "bestseller" status. Can thoroughly recommend this one though! I'll have to try The Kite Runner soon.I'm just starting on a non-fiction about Afghanistan as well (Afghanistan, Where God Only Comes to Weep).
Also re-reading The Fellowship of the Ring for a group read. I wasn't its greatest fan when I first read it, but it's been a while (20 years or so).
Nicky wrote: "Halfway through The golden compass and wondering what I should start next."You don't like it enough to read the rest of the trilogy?
I didn't read the rest in the series after The Golden Compass either. I am currently reading "The Bishop" to satisfy my thriller and "Below The Stairs" to satisfy my Downton Abbey

I really disliked The Fellowship of the Ring when I first read it, in fact I couldn't finish it, but just re-read and loved it. Feel like I've missed out all these years. I think the secret is not to feel too guilty about missing out some of the songs...
I've now moved on to the The Two Towers and I'm racing through.
I felt I had to read it as I have read and loved other Fantasy stories and as the father of the genre, I couldn't not read Tolkein

I like it well enough and I will definately finish the rest of the series. But my problem is that my to-read bookshelf at home is rather distracting. So whenever I start a series/trilogy I find myself wanting some variation in between. Sometimes it's because I like the series so well, I want to draw them out... Other times it's because I simply crave some variation. I switch very easily between genres.
:)
Guess which book this dab is from:'It is when one is alone that one begins to observe Nature and to love her.'
All Quiet on the Western Front
Everyone knows the story. But it is worth reading for the language alone, some of the writing being exquisite. Here is a dab about some Russian prisoners:'...beg with those soft, deep, musical voices, that are like warm stoves and cosy rooms at home.'
Literature at its best, emovitve, evocative and beautiful.
All Quiet on the Western Front
Her's another achingly-beautiful dab. The soldier narrator used to collect butterflies as a boy. Now he sees this:'One morning two butterflies play in front of our trench. They are brimstone butterflies, with red spots on their yellow wings. What can they be looking for here? There is not a plant nor a flower for miles. They settle on the teeth of a skull.'
Respect, Erich maria Remarque!
All Quiet on the Western Front

My daughter loves these books.
I'm reading The Book Thief. It's for an English assignment, but I love it so far!
I'm reading Juliette Gordon Low: The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. So far, I like it. Juliette was, apparently, funny as a little girl.
Finally got to the end of The Fellowship of the Ring and I found it half-enjoyable and half-hard work. (For any Tolkein aficionados who now hate me because it's the best book ever penned, and I've virtually gone "meh" about it - I understand that as the progenitor of epic quest-based high-fantasy it certainly has a place as a classic, but as for the writing I can't say it impresses - not that it isn't well crafted, lyrical English prose, but there is WAY too much of it. A little less description and a lot fewer songs and poems, coupled with a bit more characterisation and plot driven narrative and this would, I think, have been a truly great book. As it stands, not so much.)
Now I need something light, easy and fun, so I'm going to have a quick re-read of Reaper Man before going on to The Kite Runner which, if it's anything like A Thousand Splendid Suns, won't be at all fun, though it hopefully will be another great read.
I am reading Heartbrolen by Lisa Unger and Summerland by Elin Hilderbrand. I am also listening to Drop Shot the #2 book in the Myron Bolitar series.
Scratch Heartbroken. I put it down last night. It was so boring and I already invested 100 pages. I did read the last chapter and believe it or not I knew the ending. YUCH. Now to choose another book although to tell the truth I thin reading one book and listening to another one is enough.

Try Silmarillion, which is more dense than whole LOTR together... but you've been warned - it is more overwhelming than whole LOTR :P

I'll have to pass on that, The Silmarillion has never held any appeal - always looked like no enjoyment and 100% hard-work! If I can get through re-reading the second and third parts of LotR without feeling the need to throw them across the room I'll be doing well.
(I should be OK, Tom Bombadil was my bete noir in the first one and from what I recall of the next two he doesn't reappear).
I am so horribly unable to sit and finish one book. So, I just got the eloan from my library of .
. Then I will give Catch 22 from the hardcopy library another go and start Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult after that. As far as Catch 220 Still trudging through it
I'm reading
at the minute. It's lovely. I'm really enjoying it so far. If you're looking to read a children's book I'd recommend it! :)
Been on a real fantasy/sci-fi humour kick over the last few days - I've read Reaper Man, Witches Abroad and Small Gods and listened to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Primary Phase, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Secondary Phase and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Tertiary Phase. Now moved on to The Kite Runner - a lot less humour, but so far so good.
Next up I intend to finally get to The Book Thief for the group read.
right now I am reading
I don't know why I can't read one book at a time unless it was in one setting , who knows what I'll start when I finish those , If I finish them that is

Really enjoyed Room. Nicely written.

Let me know how Legend goes please. I fancy that.

hey Bev , I am actually almost done with legend and I am loving it , 5 star book for me , it has two protagonists and both are narrators , both enemies , it really pulled me in from the first pages and what I love is the action isn't at the last 50 pages , it actually starts right from the beginning of the book.
just a warning though book 2 comes out 2013 ( late January ), and book 3 2014 , so I don't know if you can't wait maybe you shouldn't read it other than that it's a good read .
