It's been about 10 years since I've read this book, I used to own it, but we had a house-fire and lost everything. It was about a girl who was assistant/apprentice to a magician/wizard/sorcerer and he either dies, or has to go away, so she has a couple of magical items of his, like the magic horse who can make himself big when he wants, or small like a toy horse, a magic bag I think with unlimited depths. There's also a scene that sticks out in my mind where she is on the a pier and (up until this point she's small, petite, weak) she wishes she was big and strong and suddenly turns into a big strong amazon of a woman. Then she's so upset she literally throws herself on the ground and has a screaming fit. Ringing any bells? I really, really want to find this darn book! I had thought the title was Magician's Apprentice, or Wizard's apprentice, or something like that, but I've tried searching that and every variation I can think of, so I must be wrong. Hope someone can help!!

Ok, possibly The Key of the Keplian by Andre Norton? The horse part of the request is there--but I don't remember anything about the bags or her changing her size. Well, except that she finishes "growing up" since at the start of the book she's just under 16 and by the end of the book she's in either her very late teens or early 20's.

Ok ... I have had a look through my Dragonlance collection and I cannot find it there. I know I have read this book but buggered if I can think of the title, I am sure it is not any of Andre Norton's books. This will probably drive me crazy now till it is answered.

I do not suppose it was a moralizing children's fantasy novel from pre WWII? That's what's coming to mind right now, although I can't remember the title.

I feel like there is a scene in one of Edward eager or E. Nesbit's books where the little girl makes herself a grown-up warrior and then has a crying fit, but the rest doesn't sound like what they wrote.

I know... I'm coming up with "little horse that gets big" and "girl becomes amazon" from separate stories, but not altogether, and the magician's apprentice isn't part of them at all. (I asked my mother for the title of the book I thought of earlier -- The Adventures of Maidilie -- but she remembered more of it than I did and it doesn't fit the description.)
