Popular Books by Date - a good resource for 2 and 5
Fantstic Fiction - a good resource for 2, 4 and 5 - highly recommended for 2 because it provides a chronological list of books without anthologies etc, which GR lists)
Delicious Dee -- Goodreads lists my author attributed to a bunch of magazines and co-authoring books and the oldest doesn't make sense at all being in another language - she writes in English. So I used her website and looked at her biblio. Could I use that as a reference instead and when posting points reference that?

My favourite author is Guy Gavriel Kay and my favourite book is The Lions of al-Rassan which is set in a fantasy land which is strongly based on Spain. Could I read a book set in either a fantasy land or in Spain?
I would say fantasy - while the description says equivacal of medieval spain it doesn't say how it is - location/traditions/customs...

6. Tess Gerritson came up on Lit Map using Baldacci as the input -- since I have not read her, I will read the first of her books The Surgeon which is also on my home shelves

Thanks Dee - you are right (13 vs 11 letters) - brain fade on the typing. Am really glad that you liked Gerritson. I keep pushing her books back because they have not fit a challenge - now I get a chance to read her.This was a good task - I can read two good books and clear them off my shelves. My goal in this challenge is to read only books that I have at home if at all possible. Trying to reduce clutter.

rolled dice and got 1:I was using Kelley Armstrong as my author as I love her Women of the Otherworld books. The main characters who appear in most of the books are the werewolf pack who are based in New York though they go on investigations in other states and some of the books focus more on different characters in other states. Is it still ok to use New York for the state for this task even if every book in the series doesn't take place there?

Steinbeck is my author and I'm using The Grapes of Wrath as my reference book. The family starts in Oklahoma but ends up in California. Can I use California as my setting for my new book?
where was the predominance of the book set? oklahoma or cali? or the transit in between?
I'm not sure. I haven't read it for about 20 years. GR lists the setting as Oklahoma, but http://www.bibliotravel.com/books.php... says "as they fled their home state and went to California only to find further hardship and oppression."I realize I may need to pick a different book.
lol...maybe someone here has read it more recently (i avoided reading it in high school - but may use it for Corelei's task)...let's go with the setting GR has listed since I can't verify, unless someone else steps in...
Well, I'll plan on using Of Mice and Men which is set in California anyways. (But I learned how to link a website!!)

Thanks! I think I found one from 1987. I used the popular books by year from task 5.5 which helped a lot!

My Favorite Author is Vladmir Nabokov. I rolled 3,5 5 is easy, he was born in 1899 and I can read Love and Mr Lewishman, which was published that year (HG Wells)
3 is the problem. My favorite book by Nabokov is Invitation to a Beheading. I am sure there are entire essays written about exactly what the setting of this book is. Good reads describes it as "an unnamed dream country". I would argue it is mostly set within the narrators head.
So, I guess my question is, should I be reading a book that is in someones head/dreams, and if so, does anyone have a recommendation. I have read a couple of others but would prefer something new.

[Originally I had listed Alexis Wright's Carpentaria, but it is just set in a fictitious region of Australia.]

For this task I used Rachel Cain the first published book under "Rachel Cain" was 2003 she has published before this under a different name, so do I use the name that I know her by or do I use her first published work? Thanks for your help
I rolled a 2 & 3. Fav author Danielle Steel... #2 no problem but for # 3 my fav book of hers takes place in Blandinsville,Illinois(my dad's home town) and I was going to read Bitter is the New Black- it takes place in the Chicago area. Is that okay since they both take place in Illinois?Thanks.

If a book has 2 authors, but the primary one matches the task (same # of letters) , would that work?The same author also shows up on the Literature Map, but not author #2. Is that OK, in case the answer to my first question is no?

Do the books have to be fiction or can they be non fiction? I was thinking about reading one of my true Mount Everest disaster books for '3'
What is ur favorite author and book? Is your favorite book by an author also set on everest/ in nepal?

Choose one of your favorite authors. Then, go to: Roll Dice, and click on "Roll Again" ONCE (you only get one roll). Using your favorite author and the numbers you rolled, you will need to read two books (one for each die) that fit the numbered criteria below. If both dice show the same number, both books must fit the criteria for that number. You must use the same author to help you choose both books. You may not read books written by the favorite author you choose to complete this task.
For example, one of my (Delicious Dee’s) favorite authors is Nora Roberts. I will use her to help me choose both books. However, I cannot read any books written by Nora Roberts for this task.
If you rolled a:
1. Read a book written by an author whose name has the same number of letters as your favorite author. You must use the author's complete name as it appears on Goodreads. For example: Nora Roberts has 11 letters, so does Lynsay Sands.
2. Read a book published in the same year that your favorite author’s first full-length book was published (not counting short stories or novellas in anthologies). For example: Nora Roberts’s first book was published in 1981, as was A Countess Below Stairs by Eva Ibbotson. Required: Include publication date when claiming points.
3. Read a book with the same setting as your favorite book by the author. If your favorite author's book is set in the United States, at least part of the book you chose must be set in the same state. If your favorite author's book is set outside of the United States, at least part of the book you chose must be set in the same country. If your favorite author's book is set in space, the book you chose must also be set in space. If your favorite author's book is set in a fantasy world (even if that world is based on a real place), the book you chose must also be set in a fantasy world (it does not need to be the same fantasy world). For example: My favorite trilogy by Nora Roberts is set in Tennessee, as is Delicious and Suspicious by Riley Adams. Required: Include the setting for both the original author's book and the chosen book when claiming points.
4. Read a book written by an author who has the same first or last name as your favorite author. The matching name MUST have the exact spelling as it appears on Goodreads. For Example: I could read a book written by Nora DeLoach or Michael Symmons Roberts.
5. Read a book originally published in the same year your favorite author was born or died. For example: Nora Roberts was born in 1950. A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute was first published in 1950. Required: Include birthday or date of death for your favorite author.
6. Using the Literature Map, choose a new-to-you author from the results of putting in the name of your favorite author and read a book by that author. For example: Nora Roberts gave the name Jennifer Crusie as a new-to-me author.
REQUIRED: In addition to the specific requirements set out in #2, #3, and #5, anyone claiming points for this task must include what numbers you rolled AND which author you used as your favorite author (you must use the same author for both tasks).
