Mandy Beyers (mandybeyers) | 763 comments Just finished my re-read of Darkfever! 5 stars again - I really love this series and cannot wait until the new one comes out!

message 102: by Annie (new)

Annie (themadnessofhamsters) I've just finished The Private World of Georgette Heyer (6 Jan - 4 stars). Fascinating!

message 103: by Annie (new)

Annie (themadnessofhamsters) Hi Yz and Sheila...
If it makes any difference, I Am the Messenger is marketed - and probably written - as a young adult novel, which does mean some limitations in where you can take the book, if you know what I mean. There are some emotional places the target audience can't identify with. That said, it is one of my favourite books - YA or adults.

It is a lovely book, don't get me wrong. In fact, I'f I'm not mistaken, I read it because you picked it for me a year ago for our Pick-It-For-Me challenge. :)

Yes, I did. And, I know you enjoyed it :)

I know people will mostly prefer The Book Thief. Which is a wonderful book, too!

Valorie | 2218 comments I finished Kiss of Fire by Deborah Cooke on Jan 5th. I really enjoyed it. I can't believe I waited so long to start this series!

message 109: by ~Megan~ (new)

~Megan~ (megadee) Finished Darkfever...4 stars for me. I'm really missing the romance :( But I'm liking everything else!

message 110: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments I finished reading To Teach an Ancient God last Saturday. I thought it was a pretty creative twist on the Hades/Persephone storyline. Wish it was longer.

message 111: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I was going to listen to It Happened One Autumn however we are flooded in and I am consequently not able to do my normal driving. So I have to change.

I'm going to read Darkfever (hopefully in time). :)

message 112: by Annie (new)

Annie (themadnessofhamsters) Sending you LOTS of love and hugs from Auckland, Jane!!!

message 113: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited Jan 10, 2011 09:42PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments :) Thanks Annie - We are very safe here, but I'm most likely to go insane 'cos we have 7 in our house rather than just my husband and me (incl 2 girls under 10yo going stir-crazy!). Plus we might lose a bit of weight due to rationing food if the floods continue for much longer!! (No supplies have made it through since last Friday and they aren't expected for some days yet...)

It is looking shocking for Brisbane though...

message 114: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments Just saw the news Jane, it looks horrendous and to lose 9 dead already is unbelievable. All fingers & toes crossed for you and several relos I've got up that way.

message 115: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Jane, just found out about the floods, so sorry- sending love and positive thoughts to you and your family.

message 116: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited Jan 11, 2011 03:55PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Thanks Sandra and Fran. 75% of Queensland (a state of 1.7million square kilometres) has now been declared a natural disaster zone!! I'm actually originally from Toowoomba which is one of the hardest hit cities. Unbelievable footage and very upsetting! Fingers-crossed they find the missing 80 odd people but I doubt they will. Fortunately I am not aware of any friends or relatives in trouble at this stage. I do expect some friends and relatives homes to be affected by the Brisbane flood though...

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments @ Jane(PS)

Praying that you and your loved-ones will stay safe during this terrible time.

message 118: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Thanks Yz :) At least it is sunny today!

message 119: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Just finished Darkfever and I really liked it - in fact, I think I loved it!! I've ordered the next 3 books and have the 5th on my BD wishlist, watching the price. :)

Mac didn't bother me at all (like I've read in some of the GR reviews for this book). I really enjoyed her. Had KMM taken the clothes descriptions on for any longer - maybe I would have burred up. But I think KMM was just trying to contrast worlds and show the massive change to any person thrown into this fantasy. A Barbie Doll Mac was an easy illustrative vehicle.

5 stars.

message 120: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ | 3901 comments I finished Storm Born and loved it.

message 121: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 1058 comments I checked Deep Dish out of the library. But, not feeling particularly motivated at the moment, I decided to skip this list and returned the book.

message 122: by ~Sara~ (new)

~Sara~ | 667 comments I just read To Teach an Ancient God. I agree with what everyone has said - it would've been a great story but it was too short! Even with a short story you should care about what happens to the characters, but these 2 weren't fleshed out enough for that. As it was I gave it 2 stars.

There are a bunch of great books in this list I've already read, including two of my favorites: P&P and The Name of the Wind.

message 132: by Lili (new)

Lili | 343 comments Just finished The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn and gave it 4 stars.
I would've given it 5 but since I still don't know who the writer is... it's 4.
Great story, I love Kate, she's a witty character and the epilogue II was quite fun to read.

You're in for a treat, Fran, that's a great book, one of the very few i've reread and more than once too!

message 134: by Miss (new)

Miss | 330 comments I'll probably read White Witch, Black Curse since i stopped following that series around that book. This challenge has given me the impetus to continue with series i've forgotten about like Women of the Otherworld and now this :).

How did you like it?

message 147: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) I always like the time travel romances but can't imagine that I would want to live in 1512. I like electricity and indoor plumbing too much.

LOL...good point.

This is a great time-travel series, and a good introduction to KMM's Fever series. I saw that you have the Fever books in your TBR, so I though I'll mention it. : )

message 149: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Side-note to Sheila & Yz: I loved KMM's Highlander series - I read them about 2 years ago. I think I'll be refreshing my memory on them later this year :)
