Read this one when I was in middle school. The story was set in New England somewhere, and the girl went to live with her dad and step-mom I believe. She somehow meets a ghost from the Revolutionary War and they go back in time a few times I think. They fall in love. I remember a few scenes in a graveyard too. The cover had a picture of a girl and a boy in a uniform and I think the back cover was red, but could be wrong.

The Sherwood Ring by Elizabeth Marie Pope? Setting is upstate NY and the heroine is staying with an uncle but there are similarities. Highly recommended.
