Trudy (tblaine9) Great Start Shelby - WTG!!! and Welcome aboard!!!

Books Ring Mah Bell Shelby! Awesome! Welcome. What is your secret?

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* I quit eating beef. That's really all I did. Everytime I think of eating it I get grossed out. I need to lose more and I'm stuck. I guess it's time to really try harder..with my fav. holiday Thanksgiving lurking in the backgroud. :)

Trudy (tblaine9) Hey Moolewis2000...

I can't imagine that one person in here would not welcome your advice!!! Feel free to create your own thread if you want or chime in where it makes the most sense!!!

WELCOME AND THANKS!!!

Yeah, what Trudy said...
:)

message 58: by Myra (new)

Myra | 33 comments Great, and thanks! My number one piece of advice as far as exercise goes is intervals, intervals, intervals. Whatever time you have to do "cardio", always incorporate higher intensity intervals into it. For example: Walk on the treadmill for 1 minute at 3.5 mph, then 1 minute for 4.0 mph. Or on the bike, cycle at level 2 for 2 minutes, then level 5 for 1 minute. All the latest research shows that this is the way to go to burn the most amount of calories during and after your workout!

message 59: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (tblaine9) Good to know I am on track with the intervals... I do it on the bike the way you decribed... for the ellipticle I concentrate on the speed instead of the level... I go at 50's for a minute 60's for a minute and so on. If I tried a higer level, my legs would protest...

message 60: by Myra (new)

Myra | 33 comments Excellent! Want to tell me your workout schedule? How often you work out, how much, what you're doing? If you like the bike....I read a research article recently that stated that performing 30 second maximum intervals, followed by a 4 minute moderate pace burned an extreme amount of calories post-exercise. The trick, though, was to go ALL OUT for those 30 seconds. You could try it just to switch things up. I don't do more than about 5 "sets" of this, as it's a killer workout (even with 4 minutes of "rest" between 30 sec. intervals).

message 61: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (tblaine9) A typical night at the gym conists of the following:
1) 30 minutes on the bike... right now 1:30 intervals of level 7 then level 12
2) Then I go to the ellipticle and go for about 15 minutes (working up to 30) on level 1 but I change the speed up - do a minute on 50's (resting) and then a minute on 60's or as high as I can go.
3) Then I do the arm bicycle thing for about 10 minutes... no real strategy there other than just trying to keep going at that point...

I have been building up to this for the last month... and do it about 4-5 times a week. For the last two week's I "rest" by playing volleyball on Wednesdays and taking off Sundays.

I am six feet tall and have a big frame. I like the weight machines, but I am deathly afraid of bulking up.

message 62: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (tblaine9) Mole - Any advice on supplements? My hubby is a professional basketball player... and most everything he gets jazzed about he says "you should try it" - like those sweat inducing thermal suits, protein shakes and every piece of equipment in the gym. I am on board with the exercise, I just don't know if the other stuff really applies to me. We actually argued over the sweat inducing suits last night... I think they are dangerous/unnecessary, but he swears they help you lose weight by getting rid of excess water. My arguement is that would only be temporary as your body will only start accumulating it again - so what is excess?

THANKS AGAIN for your help/guidance!!!

message 63: by Myra (new)

Myra | 33 comments Wow! Awesome job on all that cardio.! Sounds perfect really. However, I really would suggest that you try to incorporate some weight training. You don't have enough testosterone pulsing through you to worry about bulking up. Please, please, don't let that keep you from strength training. There are some professionals out there who say lifting weights is even better for you than cardio. Muscle burns many more calories than fat does, and it is what gives your body a nice shape. Not to mention better bone density, stronger joints, better flexibility, etc. It also can burn tons of calories during and after you workout (just like intervals). Just try a circuit 2x/week. Go to my website (which I DO NOT keep updated hardly at all I'm ashamed to say) amandasfitness.com - my last post on there is a whole body workout. Let me know what you think and if you have questions.

message 64: by Myra (new)

Myra | 33 comments Hey - for your purposes, the only "supplements" I might recommend would be a protein or meal replacement shake to have right before and/or after your workout. It's great to get some high quality protein into your muscles within 30 minutes of a good workout, and the whey protein found in most protein shakes is about the best way to accomplish this. As long as you're eating at least 5 fruits & veggies a day (which I'm sure you are, wink wink) I don't even recommend wasting money on vitamins.

message 65: by Trudy (last edited Feb 12, 2009 05:27AM) (new)

Trudy (tblaine9) Thanks for the feedback Moolewis!!! It is encouraging to know I am on the right track.

I will check out your site for the weight training portion. I always lifted for sports and do like weights - I just didn't really realize the total positive impact they had on the body and boy do my joints need the help (vball kicked my butt... or rather crippled my knees even WITH the Glucosamine I take...) so I will look forward to starting that up. Question - Any benefit to going the resistance band route or just stick with the machines at the Y?

I think I will stick with the vitamins for now, but I have been recently craving veggies so I know I am getting better in that department too. What is this world coming to "craving veggies" LOL

Thanks again and again and again! : )

Jenbrandau341 | 80 comments I just joined this group because it seems like it would be a great support for me. I am struggling with the whole exercise and diet thing but am trudging along I guess. I am a resolutionist, meaning I started at the beginnig of the year and have lost a whopping 4.5 pounds. I exercise 5 times a week and get discouraged at the amount of pounds shed verses the hard work that ive put in. Anyway I am excited to join a group that is dealing with some of the same issues I am! glad to be here.

mary elizabeth Williams wow! 4.5 is a lot for just over a month and a half!! great job for keeping with your resolution! it takes real will power and alot of effort to make life changes. keep it up!

message 68: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (tblaine9) Jen,
Welcome aboard!!! 4.5 lbs. is a great start! What is your strategy, counting fat, counting calories, Weight Watchers...? Everyone on here is doing something different so it may help to have someone that is doing what you are doing chime in.

I know for me that when I started exercising, my weight loss slowed down a bit. The exercise is great for you even if you don't see the scale cooperating at first. Keep it up and the results will come!

message 69: by Myra (new)

Myra | 33 comments Hey, it's moolewis (changed my username)....exercise bands are great! Just make sure the resistance is pretty tough - do 8 to 20 reps per set (and it needs to take some good effort).

Myra | 33 comments Jen, Good for you! I'm the resident personal trainer here in the group - everyone's been kind enough to let me drop in and help you gals out. If you'd like to tell me what you do at the gym, I could give you some advice on your workout....
and are you writing down what you eat each day?

message 73: by Jenbrandau341 (last edited Feb 22, 2009 05:50PM) (new)

Jenbrandau341 | 80 comments Myra and Trudy, I hit the gym in the mornings and do cardio usualy 20 mins on eliptical and run for 20 mins on treadmil. I keep it simple because I am so not a morning person. Thursday night is bootcamp class at the gym so I do not go in the mornings. I usually take Friday off (too sore from bootcamp) Then Saturdays I usually take off. I allow 2 days to miss from the gym. Sundays I focus on some weight training but may do a little cardio. I am terrible about writing down what I eat. I am cutting down on carbs and really focusing on my portions. I feel I need to retrain my body how to recognize I'm full on less food. Anyway thats it in a nutshell and any advice would be greatly welcome. Thanks bunches!!

Well that sounds great! Anyone who can motivate themselves to get up in the morning and workout consistently gets kudos in my book! As I've mentioned a few times before, interval training is the best way to burn calories during and after your workout, so definitely try to incorporate that into your cardio routine at least 3 days of the week. Let me know if you need more details on that. Also, I keep reading that writing down your calories can help you lose twice as much weight as you would if you didn't write it down. I know I do much better when I keep a diet journal

message 75: by Jenbrandau341 (new)

Jenbrandau341 | 80 comments Thanks for the info. I will definately start recording what I eat. I would love to get more info on the interval training. Thank you so much!

I've experienced that calorie-tracking phenomenon! It's true! (Too bad I haven't even logged in to Sparkpeople in, like 3 weeks... Why can't lazy people lose weight??? hee hee hee)

message 77: by Marsha (new)

Marsha (earthmarsha) I'm with you, Amanda. I've been very good at working with the Wii Fit, and I do try to eat well, but I just can't manage to document everything on Sparkpeople. I hate having to enter every recipe I want to cook, and every bite I put in my mouth. It's soooooo tedious.

Howdy y'all! (Ok, I have no idea why I just said that. I was kinda using a Dolly Parton voice when I said it, too...) Anyway, I moved the Exercise folder up closer to the top of the group since it's one we've come to use VERY often. Just an FYI, so you're not like "O_o" next time you go to post something...

mary elizabeth Williams Hey Amanda, Is it possible to delete really, really old posts? Like the Halloween ones?? Its getting to be to much. Let me know if I can help!

message 81: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) | 557 comments Mod
Beth, what if I move "DEAD" threads to their own folder and put them way down at the bottom? How do you navigate through the group's page? If I move them to their own folder, will that help get them out of your way?

(I hesitate to delete, mostly because I'm a pack rat. I always think, "Well, we might need that." It feels like erasing history. I know. I'm insane. But if you guys want them deleted, then I'll do it! I just want you to be SURE first! hee hee)

mary elizabeth Williams yes, that might be helpful. thanks amanda!

Thanks Dorie, you're too sweet!

I'm gonna continue to check in, but probably not every single day. I miss it here too much to stay gone long! :)
The gym, for some reason, inspires tears to fall. Does that happen to anyone else? I mean, I don't weep or anything, but I always get an irresistible urge to cry when I'm at the gym. I don't know if it's because of all the sweat and high heart rate, or if it's because I'm all by myself and have time to think. Or both. Either way, it's so very strange. I'm ok with it. I like to think I'm washing my toxins away...

message 90: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (tblaine9) Mands...

the gym inspires tears some days for me too... I tend to get overwhelmed with how far I have left to go, how much time it is going to take to get there, etc. Overall I DO LIKE being active so I am trying to make it more like fun... and less like punishment.

It is extremely nice to have someone to go with, but when I hear things like "you need to get off that bullshit ass bike" I kind of wish I didn't have a steady audience. Sigh... He means well... Two sides to the coin, I guess...

It is so funny when I zoom it in the one donkey looks like he's smiling for the camera and even shows all his teeth its hilarius! I got a camera for Christmas so I like to take pics now. I mess around alot. I just learned how to import them to computer and print my own! Yes I'm not very advanced when it comes to computers and electronics but its fun.

Problem: I cry over just about anything. We did discuss this, but for him to try to avoid hurting my feelings is an effort in futility at times. I am sooo sensitive and I have no idea how I got this way. LOL
