It's very simple, really.

1. Select a diet/exercise plan (with your doctor, of course!). I'm using sparkpeople.com to count calories and lose one or two pounds a week.

2. Weigh in every week (we can post a new thread under Weigh Ins for each week). The weigh in is important!!! Helps you to be accountable for yourself and allows us to cheer you on when you lose!!!

3. Share your successes and hurdles with the rest of the group.

This group is designed to give us GoodReaders a built-in cheerleading squad. Remember to be healthy and to LOVE YOURSELF above all else!

message 2: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I don't wanna post my starting weight though.

Whatever works for you, Gal!!!! This is a group of EMPOWERMENT AND SUPPORT! No hatin' allowed! :)

message 4: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony I'm in. I had a head start, though. After getting on a scale after a drunken Memorial Day weekend binge I started working out like crazy...I've lost about fifteen, sixteen pounds...and I want to lose at least another fifteen, maybe more. Manders rocks.

message 5: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) Can we make sure that there's no 'hifalutin' talks here please? Thank you... I've had my fill of alter groups and their 'intelligence'

with that said.

Hi, I'm Kim, I've had 4 kids and I hate the way I look. Empower me. (I'm lazy)

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Anthony, it's soooooo unfair how much faster men can lose weight than women! It probably will take me twice as long to lose sixteen pounds. But go, you! That's awesome. For you. Not for girls. Heh.

message 7: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Is it really harder for women? I didn't know that...seriously.

My biggest fear is losing it and putting it all back on. I'm SO not out of the woods. I still have a long way to go...but thanks, Sarah:)

I like this group...we can be in this together.

message 8: by Tera (new)

Tera Im on vacation atm so no scales but I am trying not to explode on myself before I get home. Vacations are so tricky!
Last month we bought Wii Fit and I seriously LOVE IT.

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I've heard good things about Wii Fit. I would like that. Combining exercise and video gaming! My friend who's 40 and in pretty good shape got the Wii Fit and his Fit Age was like 56 or something!

Can we have a folder for exercise, Amanda?

message 10: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) What does Wii Fit involve, Tera? Because I might be able to convince the house that it would be beneficial to get it...

and is Maniac Mansion available for Wii?

No.. no, Kim.. bad Kim... this would be for EXERCISE, not for nuking hamsters..

Tera, I'm on vacation right now, too. (Where are you by the way???) I've taken this opportunity to:

1. Splurge a little (Italian for dinner last night--sundried tomato and basil cream sauce). 2. Take a step back from some of the "routines" I was getting myself into back home--such as grabbing a starbucks (or two) every day and eating Indian buffet on my days off.
3. Take advantage of being in a new city and looking at the food people in other parts of the country eat. That way, I'm already a little more open minded about changing my diet.

And RA, I'm with you. I lost 20+ lbs a little over a year ago. And then I fell in love so I celebrated by eating. And then I had a horrible break up, so I mourned by eating. Sooooo, yeah, put that back on QUICKLY! Damnit. Being back at square one is disheartening.

message 12: by Kim (last edited Jul 21, 2008 10:14AM) (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) I'm the opposite Mands, I lost 17lbs last year when I was depressed and then when I got happy again, boom... there it went.

So, c'mon guys... depress me.

message 13: by Tera (new)

Tera Wii Fit involves a balance board and your wii
There are 4 catagories of activities
Yoga
Strength Trainging
Balance
Aerobics

Within each of those catagories there are multiple activities in it. So there are different aerobic games (I love the step training) and Balance games (I love Ski Jump) and then in yoga and strength there are exercises and poses to do and it measures you as you do all of them to keep score and make sure youre doing them right.

It will graph your weight and set up goals for you and monitor your progress.

The wii age is a combination of your weight and your balance ability.

It is pretty fun.

Im on vacation in WA at my moms (I know it doesnt necessarily go together or provide an enviroment of healthy eating)

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Amanda, I started losing weight this January but I posted my info under the 'weigh in' anyway. Because of my extensive health prob's, I don't have a specific diet and exercise plan other than to lose these 70+lbs gradually, so I don't think I'll be weighing in every week. (I've lost 19 lbs since the beginning of this year to date, so that was over nearly 6 months).

I should be walking (a lot) more than I do, so maybe my weekly goal will be to get on the tread mill 4 times a week. I also have to start doing sit ups and belly crunches to get rid of this life preserver thing I've got going on with my stomach but I have to be very careful because of my back.

The biggest things that have worked for me, I think, so far are watching what I eat & trying to eat fresh foods and prepare meals with as many fresh ingredients as possible instead of using prepackaged foods and paying attention to how much sodium, high fructose corn syrup and other crap is in the stuff (& if it's too much, I don't eat it), how much I eat at one time (no pigging out), taking vitamins and eating yogurt.

Kudo's to you for starting this group!!!

Someone empower me to stay away from that bag of M&Ms whispering to me from the kitchen. Please.

message 16: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) Count me in, I am the gal in yellow!
I won't post my weight online but I am definitely in.

message 17: by Misty (new)

Misty (potterfreak) | 1 comments Hello All, I saw the thread for this group on the Chicks on Lit sight and realized this may be just what I need. I need a little motivation in my life right now. I lost approx. 75lbs about 5 years ago and have done an ok job keeping most of it off (it was through Weight Watchers). However, I moved to Chicago from Augusta, GA last November and honestly have been so lonely that I find myself constantly seeking consolation in food. So I've discovered that I've let my weight get back to about 165lbs and I'm only 5'4".
So thanks for the site, I'm looking forward to the motivation and inspiration!

message 18: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) | 557 comments Mod
Hi Misty! We're the same height--I hear ya!
How did you lose weight 5 years ago? Any techniques we can utilize now?

message 19: by Thressa (new)

Thressa Thanks, Amanda! I love this idea. I started back to Weight Watchers about a month ago and have lost about 2 pounds so far. I am hoping to get motivated soon and this may be just what I need. I weigh in tomorrow night so I will post after that. I am 5'3" and have about 100 pounds to loose. I have lost weight in the past (up to 30ish lbs), but I found every bit of it and then some.

message 20: by Emily (new)

Emily (ejfalke) Exciting group! Happy to be a part! Wii Fit is very awesome - and the little "weigh in" part at the beginning is pretty motivating.

I am starting MediFast next week when I get home from a literature class I've been attending (wonderful breakfasts and lunches provided every day...lots of snacks...staying with my parents in the meantime who like to go out to eat...bad combination).

message 21: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) Gus, hand those M&Ms over here. I'll keep them safe. Trust the Kim. Trust.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

They're on their way.

Hey, I was good for dinner tonight. I'm home alone with the wee little one - the missus is on a biz trip - and I fixed me some chicken chorizo with organic brown rice and stir-fry veggies. Mmm...tasty.

Then I chased them with an ice cream sandwich.

Boooooo!

message 23: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Gus, was it hard to be good for dinner? I realize that's a strange question, but the first few weeks of breaking habits are a bitch....

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Actually, it's not hard for me. I tend to eat rather healthily, making certain there's always a serving of protein and veggies. I just need to motivate myself, or be more motivated, to exercise more. My weight fluctuates, and I tend to lose weight as easily as I can put it back.

Oh, and there's that damn fondness for beer. And, no, low-cal or light beer is NOT an option.

message 25: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) | 557 comments Mod
Mmmmm... Beer...

message 26: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) | 557 comments Mod
Ok, dollfaces, tomorrow is my first day of official dieting. It'll be good, I think. I remember the first few weeks being HARD but after that, everything was much more hunky dorey (sp???). I'm keeping that in mind, and I'm giving myself hi-5s for already starting in on more veggies and drinking more in lieu of eating. Off to a good start, I'd say. :)

message 27: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) Okay, Mands... I'm starting today too. Val is coming this weekend... so, I may store up my calories for her visit.

hard boiled eggs and water here I come!

message 28: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) Mands... I'm hungry.

Amanda (randymandy) | 557 comments Mod
What did you bring for lunch? (Are you at work?)

message 31: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) I'm at work. Problem is I can debit whatever the hell they have up at the cafe. That is not good. I may go buy an egg.

message 32: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) | 557 comments Mod
Hahahah! An egg? What the hell are you gonna do with ONE egg?

message 33: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) Wish it were a quesadilla...

message 34: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Kimmers, I have a recipe for a yummy chicken quesadilla that is only 6 WW points. Want it?

message 35: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) bring it on, Hairy... :)

message 36: by Misty (new)

Misty Hey, everybody! I wasn't going to join because...1)Do I really need that on my update feed? Oh, well. Who cares? 2)Some of you might think I'm stalking you, but dang it, I enjoy the conversation. I love witty! 3)I won't be losing weight anytime soon; supposed to be gaining a pound a week...due Dec.9th. Yay!

But, I figure the exercise will be good for me, and the whole "eating for two" thing is a myth. I was looking forward to unlimited whatever-I-want :) No go.

message 37: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Aw, congrats, Misty! Yeah, eating for 2 is definitely a myth. The baby's stomach, especially right now, is teeny.

message 38: by Misty (new)

Misty Thanks, Sarah! I had lost 20 lbs when we found out. Luckily, I did it by eating healthy, so that's something I can continue doing. Love me some fruits!

message 39: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) I'm here because I went through a rough time and gained 40 pounds in about 6 months.

Now I need to lose that 40. Soon. I'm tired of being lazy!

message 40: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) Welcome Carrie!

message 41: by Holli (new)

Holli Hi you all!! I'm joining because apparently my mid section is starting to resemble a tire and that's so not good for my heart my cardiologist says. I seriously inherited the apple shape from my momma and now I'm all middle with skinny legs. I'm starting to picture the Apple Fruit of the Loom man when i think about myself!!

So......I am choosing to actually do what's right and follow my cardiac/diabetic diets that I should have been following for years now and stop this nonsense of eating whatever I want. i got a second chance and i dont want to fuck that up too ;)

I have a hard time following both of these diets because they seriously leave nothing to eat but salad...ok I may be exaggerating some but its how it feels.....so I would love the support from you guys to make me accountable!!

message 42: by CrisTina (new)

CrisTina | 7 comments Mind if I join? I don't have time to read things over right now but will for sure tomorrow. Someone mentioned this group to me and it sounded perfect since I am on goodreads and I am trying to lose weight! Thanks :)

message 43: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmdoubleday) Hey Holli! :) You've got my support, baby!

Hi Cristina!

message 44: by Holli (new)

Holli Thanks Kim!!! I'm tryin....but the mac and cheese was callin my name tonight for dinner!! :)

Cristina, of course we don't mind if you join! The more the merrier! :) woo hoo!

message 46: by CrisTina (new)

CrisTina | 7 comments Thank you! Now to do some reading and try to catch up. :)

message 47: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (tblaine9) Amanda,
I don't know if this group was your brain child, but THANK YOU so much for starting it. It really is helpful to have a place to share ideas, vent, etc. In my circle of friends you have some people that get it and some people that don't. On here, I know we all get it. Whatever that "it" happens to be that day...

message 48: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) | 557 comments Mod
Trudy, you're such a doll! Thanks...
I'm glad we're in it together, that's for sure.
(((hug)))

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* I wanna join too. I lost some already. I stopped eating beef after reading Mad Cowboy and the weight started dropping. I weighed 260 and honey on a girl that's 5'4" it ain't pretty. Now I'm down to 186. I can't lost anymore. I'm at a standstill. Plus being out of work for a couple of weeks near Halloween isn't helping. I want this off the hiney!
