Andrea i do listen to books on tape while driving and I can actually read on my Nook while I am working out if I am alone. Lately, Ive been dragging a friend with me and we talk while working out and I love that too.

Kristi (kristicoleman) Becky wrote: "Sometimes you need a break from reading, just like any other hobby. The sudden sense of obligation or duty to a hobby is terribly offputting."

That's totally true. I usually have a slump once per year...just nothing looks good when I go to pick a book, that's when I know I need a break and switch over to knitting.

message 303: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Zink I am currently reading Slaughterhouse-Fivefor another group, Song of Susannah, which I love. My chunkster right now distracting me from other chunksters is House of Leavesand another chunkster A Game of Thronesand my YA book Tempest. I downloaded your current chunkster classic to my kindle, and I am hoping to catch up!

message 304: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 885 comments Just got T.S. Eliot's Essays Ancient and Modern on interlibrary loan, started it this afternoon. Some really good stuff in it. I hadn't been familiar with Eliot's prose writing, but he's very good.

message 305: by Sera (new)

Sera I'm about half-way through Don Quixote and then I've been distracted by some shiny books from the library and a book club read.

I have a book and a half to go before I dig into Jonathan Strange. I'm going to hit it hard so as to catch up. Then, after I finish DQ, I intend to start Brothers K.

message 306: by Becky (new)

Becky I had to stop on this groups BK read. I was just trying to read too many things at once, and I was also feeling in the mood for something lighter. I decided to read Inkheart because my young cousin wanted to read them, and I thought it would be fun to talk about with her.

message 307: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) I'm reading Inkheart too, Becky. ;-)

I am going through the same thing Andrea. Minus the gym. At least you have that to say for yourself! LOL... I am just starting to read more now so hopefully I will get back to Middlemarch soon.

message 309: by Tasha (last edited Jun 19, 2012 03:16AM) (new)

Tasha I went away for a few days and didn't want to lug the chunkster and my ebook version at the Iibrary had expired and so came back with a ton of other current reads. I am now distracted from my chunkster (Jonathan Strange) but plan to get back by the end of the month and catch up to everyone.

Here's what's distracting me right now:

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote A Free Man of Color (Benjamin January, #1) by Barbara Hambly The Gift of Valor A War Story by Michael M. Phillips

message 310: by Sera (new)

Sera Still working on DQ

message 311: by Juliette (new)

Juliette Just started 1Q84

message 312: by Ginny (new)

Ginny I'm trying to get through my next goal for 1001 the In Search of Lost Time books, as well as any shorter reads I can find on my bookshelves to donate to my sister-in-law's used bookstore.

message 313: by Tasha (last edited Jun 27, 2012 04:02AM) (new)

Tasha Here's what is distracting me right now:

Inquisition by Alfredo Colitto and then These Is My Words by Nancy E. Turner

Once these two are done I plan on getting completely caught up with Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell (Jilid II) by Susanna Clarke , although I'll probably try to sneak I some chapters in between my other two reads.

Tasha, we'll probably be starting at the same time. I'll be finishing both Don Quixote and Cannery Row this week. Then, I'm finally, finally, finally off to read Jonathan Strange.

message 315: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Sera, I actually have started and got up to about week 5 and got 'distracted'. :)

message 316: by Sera (new)

Sera Ha ha - no worries. I know that I'll be on my own for awhile, but that's ok. It happened to me with Pillars, too, and it all worked out.

message 317: by Tasha (new)

Tasha True, it always does. :)

message 318: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) I've just picked up Inferno by Dante Alighieri and it's sucked me in! I was surprised at how much i'm enjoying reading it. I've also got about 20 other books that I'm pecking at...but nothing is really holding my attention.

I am SO far behind on Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell! I need to just spend a day catching up so I can comment on the threads!

message 319: by Andrea (new)

Andrea I've been away for so long and I wish I could say I have been reading up a storm but I have been barely reading at all. I have been listening to some books on tape and now and then I read a chapter of Middlemarch and I'm so time invested in this book that I can't not finish...hahaha

I've had a lot going on at work and getting here in spare time has been challenging. I'm so sorry that I have been so inactive!

message 320: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (thysanura) I had decided to sit out on The Brothers Karamazov because I've been trying to work through A Clash of Kings, but then ended up dropping Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. So, I'm sad and chunksterless! Looking forward to the next round of voting. Maybe I can finish the GRRM by then. :)

In the meantime, I've been reading some old pre-Stephen King horror stuff. I just finished The Other and recently started I Am Legend. Kind of fun to knock off some things that have been on my shelf for a long time.

Hope everyone is having a nice summer!

message 321: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I've been working through JS and another chunkster, The Passage (The Passage #1) by Justin Cronin . It is so good! I feel like it's moving along very quickly.

message 322: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm making the most of the time when I am not reading a Chunkster with this group to catch up on some other reads.

So far I've read The Lord of the Rings which I loved, Salt & Honey, Perfect People, Night Waking and I'm currently reading Frankenstein. I had forgotten how much fun it is to read a short book in a couple of days but now I'm itching to get stuck in and looking forward to getting involved in the next group reads here

Shea Andrea wrote: "I've been away for so long and I wish I could say I have been reading up a storm but I have been barely reading at all. I have been listening to some books on tape and now and then I read a chapter..."

Andrea, I too am not reading as much as usual and yet still plugging away at Middlemarch. I have confidence we will finish it...someday :-)

message 324: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) I'm so behind on Jonathan Strange too! I just finished a couple of shorties, The Crying of Lot 49 and Exercises in Style. Now I'm working on The Blind Assassin.

message 325: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Shea, I have been reading 15 pages of Middle march a night so I am making some prgress now. I think I am almost 75% done!

I am still working on the first section of the Brothers Karamazov. I got Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell from the library but I'm it's just sitting on my night stand looking very BIG at the moment.

I'm listening to a good Sandra Brown book on CD - Chill Factor. I'm also reading a Discovery of Witches, that is very Twilightish to me but entertaining all the same. Lastly I have a good of health and nutrition books going.

message 326: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Librarian (ellenlibrarian) | 172 comments So, I'm sad and chunksterles..."

Me, too! I had no desire to read Brothers Karamazov and could not get into Jonathan Strange. So I've read Wild (the latest Oprah book) and English Creek, by Ivan Doig, one of my favorite authors evah. I'm now reading The Art of Fielding, which I highly recommend.

Looking forward hopefully to the next round of chunkster choices!

Andrea, I LOVE Sandra Brown! I also love Suzanne Brockmann for a quick and relaxing read.

message 328: by Becky (new)

Becky Oh god, I have discovered food blogs. Its killing me!!!! I've been on a real baking kick lately, and I'm running out of places to deliver my goodies rather than my own waistline.

Here are some of my new favorites:

http://www.bakersroyale.com/ (lots and lots of baked goods)

http://www.biggirlssmallkitchen.com/ (great food, twenty somethings, in small dose recipes)

http://www.poiresauchocolat.net/ (real fancy desserts)

message 329: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I can see how that would be distracting! :)

Thank you Thank you Thank you to both of you.... I am also still plugging away at it. Haven't made much of a dent but am over half way. Maybe I will finish by the end of the summer. I like the idea of reading 15 pages a day.... at least it's some progress.

I know this was a long time ago, but I just joined the group and have been reading Les Mis for a while. Part of me doesn't want to finish it because then it will be over and I'm seriously obsessed with it, but I also think it's rather dense. It's difficult to read, but once I finish a section and think about what happened during it and play the scene more clearly in my mind, it is amazing! Hearing the songs from the musical in my head as I read just adds that much more to an already amazing book.

message 332: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I LOVED the musical! Never read the book, though.

I am reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier along with keeping up with my chunkster read.

message 333: by Juliette (new)

Juliette Having some vision issues, definitely puts a damper on reading.

message 334: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Oh Juliette, I hope your vision issue clear up and aren't too serious! That is no fun for someone who loves to read! maybe audio books until you are all healed up?

message 335: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (thysanura) Ugh, I'm so behind! We moved in August and it took a while to unearth my copy of Lonesome Dove. Hoping to catch up, but the weeks keep flying by. Hope you guys are all doing well out there.

message 336: by Becky (new)

Becky oh moving is the worst! Hope everything went and continues to go smoothly!

message 337: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Good luck with your move Suzanne!

message 338: by Sera (new)

Sera I'll be starting both reads later this month. I need to get through some other group reads first.

Look forward to seeing you all again soon :)

message 339: by Shea (new)

Shea My current distractions are life (work, soccer, school activities, friends in need) and mindless books that do not requires any great attention or time to read. I miss this group and REALLY hope to get back into a chunkster soon! Soccer season ends at the end of this month so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

message 340: by Becky (new)

Becky Shea said " mindless books that do not requires any great attention or time to read."

Everyone needs book candy! Especially when life is busy enough!

message 341: by QueenAmidala28 (new)

QueenAmidala28 I concur - I succumbed to reading Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1) by E.L. James one day just for a change in reading atmosphere (don't judge :)) Is this considered "book candy" or just plain "trash?" LOL

message 342: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (thysanura) Thanks! The move went well, but the new home projects are endless. I hated to bail on Lonesome Dove because I've wanted to read it for ages, but I'm so far behind. I've set it aside for now, but hope everyone is enjoying it!

message 343: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Suzanne, we just had a break week...you're not really that far behind..

message 344: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (thysanura) Oooh? I'll go look! Thanks, Kristi!

message 345: by Shea (new)

Shea QueenAmidala28 wrote: "I concur - I succumbed to reading Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1) by E.L. James one day just for a change in reading atmosphere (don't judge :)) Is this considered "book candy" or just plain "trash?" LOL"

I too just finished "Fifty Shades of Grey." I think it is somewhere between candy and trash. It would definitely be a Necco wafer/conversation heart as opposed to Godiva chocolate.

message 346: by Becky (new)

Becky Shea, that might be the best description I've ever seen!

I started reading it but got too bored, and I was only reading it to see what the fuss was about. But I've read plenty of awful books and enjoyed them because they were right for me at the right time :D (cough among these are the Twilight series and Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey)

message 347: by QueenAmidala28 (new)

QueenAmidala28 Distracted by: American Lion Andrew Jackson in the White House by Jon Meacham and The Man Who Laughs by Victor Hugo

message 348: by Andrea (new)

Andrea I'm a little behind with Brothers K because I got caught up with the side read Invisible Bridge, which was great by the way! Now that I am finished with that I can return my focus to BK and be caught up by the end of the week.

message 349: by Kristi (new)
