My 3 chunksters are distracting me from eachother. I do have a Gaelen Foley novel that just came in at the library so I will HAVE to read that in order to return it on time ;-)

I'm reading Lola, California for another book group that is having an ongoing online discussion with the author. I'm also slowly working my way through Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass at the rate of one poem per day. This may actually count as a chunkster, now that I think about it!
Zee wrote: "Pride and Prejudice is proving something of a distraction at the moment!"Oh, one of my very favourite books of all time. Love it to pieces. Enjoy, Zee!:)
I just finished The Odd Women by George Gissing, a book about women and feminism in the late Victorian society. Quite enjoyable. I just started reading Anne's House of Dreams, the fifth book in the Anne of Green Gables series, because the child in me can't get enough of Anne and Gilbert:)
I got distracted by a few other reads-The Tragedy of Arthur: A Novel, The Recognitions by William Gaddis which is kind of a modern chunkster in itself and on my 12+2 challenge list for another group-and ditto for another book I'm caught up in (on my same challenge list), Call It Sleep by Henry Roth. And another lighter (to be read quickly) distraction are 2 cozy mysteries by M.C. Beaton:
Death of a Prankster (one of my beloved Hamish Macbeth series) and Agatha Raisin and the Murderous Marriage (my 2nd most favorite series of hers).
It's a wonder I actually finish as many books as I do. Let alone enjoy them.
I thought I had a load with four books going right now, but you put everything in perspective Ellie!
As I feared, life is distracting me. I spend much time reading information coming home from school, soccer schedules and things prepared by my pharmacy students. I am now also reading "No Talking" with my 8 year old. I have fallen woefully behind on my Chunksters :-(
I was reading Patrick Kennedy's The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, which I heartily recommend to anybody who likes big-picture history. It's a chunkster-and-a-half, though, at least in terms of the level of concentration required, so I interrupted it to start another chunkster, this time historical fiction, Colleen McCullough's The First Man in Rome, which is not as easy to put down.

I know I'm suffering the same thing with my son this year, lots of homework and school related activities.

Another great non-fiction chunkster is Barzun's From Dawn to Decadence. Tons of great stuff to discuss in that!
Bob wrote: "I was reading Patrick Kennedy's The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, which I heartily recommend to anybody who likes big-picture history. It's a chunkster-and-a-half, though, at lea..."I read McCullough's "Fortune's Favorites", which is a book or two after "The First Man in Rome". I loved it, and was feeling guilty for pigeon holing her because she wrote the "Thorn Birds". I plan on reading the rest of her Rome series, but am a little distracted by other things.
Right now I'm reading Lionheart. I'm quite a fan of Sharon Kay Penman.
Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear Several people have told me to read this one and now I finally am. I have to say it's much different and better than I thought it was going to be.
Almost done with:
About halfway through:
Never really started EoE as a result. :-\ I feel guilty about that. Though I am hoping to finally start once I finish SoS, which I've been plowing through.
Not reading a Chunkster at the moment, but had to share what I'm reading, because I'm betting some of you guys would enjoy it: The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie
In a way, I'd hesitate to recommend it to a really hardcore fan of the Little House books. (I know I read the first two Little House books when I was a kid, but mainly knew the series from the tv show, which I watched in syndication every day after school.) It reveals some of the truth behind them, possibly ruining some of the illusions that most folks have about their veracity. I love obsession-based memoirs, however, and this one is quite entertaining so far.
Another Chunkster
. It just came for me from the library and there is a big waiting list so I have to read it fast. Yikes! Too many chunksters so little time.

Also, Carol, I will be seriously impressed if you manage to finish that before it's due back at the library. How long do you get--2 weeks? 3?
We get three weeks so I think I'm going to get some fines since I'm trying to read East of Eden at the same time. That's okay though it's worth it! It would be an interesting book to discuss.

I'd love to read this. Norwegian Wood is very high on by TBR list although it's so long it may take a while to get to it!

I'm currently trying to read Living Dead in Dallas while simultaneously reading Mists of Avalon. The HBO show True Blood is so suspenseful and hilarious, so I thought I'd read the novels; they're surprisingly different enough from the show for me to still enjoy them.
I'm sorry I haven't been that active here, guys. It's been a bad year. Between family issues and then recently I was diagnosed w/ fibromyalgia. So, the going is tough, but I do love this group. I still have yet to finish The Three Musketeers that was a side read, but I'm plugging away on it. I'm also working on Stephen King's new book,
. It's great, but a chunkster as well. :)
@ Kathy: you were never part of the targeted demo for that message. Really, it was aimed at those who have never been active, not those who have been quiet recently. If you click on the "Members" link for the group, you'll see that there are literally dozens of folks who have been members for a long time and never posted a single comment. We're just trying to remove those. I'm really sorry if I alarmed anyone!
I felt bad anyway, about my inactivity. I do understand the reason for cleaning house, though. And would've understood. Thanks for putting my mind at ease. :)
I am distracted from all reading by National Novel WRITING month! But I am sure I will start reading again in Dec...
Man, I totally forgot about NaNoWriMo...we should have set up a therad to discuss it. Next year we'll get on it. How's your NaNo coming Rosemary?
I'm completely caught up in a kind of contemporary chunkster,
. I love it but it's taking my every spare moment (and some that are not so spare).
I agree! I'm loving this book too!Ellie wrote: "I'm completely caught up in a kind of contemporary chunkster,

I'm so glad I'm not alone. I haven't been able to really stay with any long books for a while so it's nice to be able to - and to love it so much.
Have you read any of Murakami's other books?
are all really good too. I read
and it was okay but I didn't like it as well as the others.
Another Sookie Stackhouse marathon person here - I'm up to book 5 at the moment. I love the tv show even more. After that I'll be catching up on the last few Terry Pratchett Discworld novels and Brian Jacques Redwall novels that I've missed, before committing myself to George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, which will probably take up the best part of next year!

Too funny I am also doing a sookie stackhouse marathon. I am waiting for book 6 and watched the first season of true blood and waiting for the second season to come my way from the library.
Currently I am reading
it is very interesting and I am Loving it so far. I am also reading
. I was a little intimidated to start this book. I could kick myself for waiting so long. This is a great book so far.
I'm still reading Vanity Fair while trying to finish my 75 children's/YA challenge for another group. I did not read Vanity Fair to Aruba and in an odd way I missed it. I'm 58% done so I know I can finish it by the end of the year. I would really like to finish it before the side read of Kavalier and Clay starts but I know that the chances of that happening are not so great...lol

so far? I plan on reading it soon....
Jolene, I'm absolutely loving it! Sure, I might be biased, since I'm a huge King fan....but I don't think so! I highly recommend it!
I'm currently reading a huge set of Chunksters along with East of Eden although luckily I am managing to keep up with the group read. I'm on book 6 of the Wheel of Time series. There are currently 13 books with another one the way and each one is roughly 300,000 words. True chunksters for anyone who enjoys epic fantasy!
I am also being distracted by my exams in January, or should I say my fiction books are distracting me from my text books!

I am so glad that I am not the only one who reads multiple books at a time. I am trying to read a book on deaf culture, my favorite novel of all time (the one I read over and over), and trying to read my Spanish language book.
I've got several books going too. I'm working on the following:
Crazy, huh? Macbeth I'm reading w/ my son, who's reading it for school. I've been trudging through The Three Musketeers for awhile...I started it here w/ a group. And unfortunately, everything took a backseat to the new Stephen King book......I'm just hopeless. lol
