Sharla (sharlashangeling) | 2 comments You know you're a book addict when you're at glastonbury music festival - with some of the hottest bands out playing a storm and you have to go to the dodgy tent in the back and buy a couple second hand books which you then have to lug around for the next couple days in mud and sleet....

What's your "You know ur a book addict when..." story???

message 2: by Lasairfiona (new)

Lasairfiona | 9 comments I tend to be labled a book addict when people notice that I carry books around everywhere. I don't even put them in a purse or anything so it is quite noticeable. I have been known to walk around campus while reading a book, watching for obstacles in my peripheral vision (easy to do on a campus, not so much in "real" world).

I explain to people: I get a lot more read if I snag five minutes here in the grocery line, five minutes there while waiting for a ride, and a good half an hour or more when I go to a restaurant or bar alone with a book (I get a lot of funny looks for those situations). Usually people start nodding and "promise" to think about carrying more books around with them (this is usually after they lament that they don't read enough). Carrying around a book all the time is a great way to start reading more, or at least make you look smart. I have had a number of conversations start up because of the book I was reading, and a number of them quickly ended when I really had to get to the next chapter. :D

message 4: by Kataklicik (new)

Kataklicik | 3 comments You're a book addict when you just have to look-see in the store when you already know you have more unread books than read ones; and definitely an addict when you come home with more books than your arms can carry, and then have to hide your newly found treasures from your husband and your kids!!

So many books, so little time!

Bliss (blissreads) | 16 comments Welllllllllll, I'm still in denial. I am NOT an addict. ha ha ha

But I take my books to the toilet, to the movies, to church, to family events (baby showers, etc.)

You never know when you'll get a chance to read a few paragraphs or pages!

When you have your own carry on suitcase for books and STILL stop by the book shop at the airport and buy a paperback, just in case!!!!

message 15: by Renee (new)

Renee I love this topic! hahahaha Made me think of my trip to Portland OR last year. I discovered Powells on my first day in town (actually set aside a whole day) and thought to myself after walking through the door - "I'm going to need a bigger suitcase"

message 16: by C.G. (new)

C.G. (samatwitch) | 11 comments Going to Powell's is one of the top things on my to-do list. I was disappointed that the only time I've made it to Portland we didn't have time for it. We arrived at 3:30 pm, went to the special preview screening of "Serenity" at 10 pm, and left for the seven-hour drive home at 8 am! Next time.

message 17: by Armando (new)

Armando Alvarez | 9 comments 1)you know your a book addict when you go on vacation and spend more time in a book store than visiting the sites.

2)you know you are a book addict if you can classify people as a light reader, magazine reader, and consider yourself a heavy reader.

3)you know you are a book addict when your famliy had an intervention but you were too busy reading to hear it.

best ones i got lol jokes though accept for the first which happened when i was in colorado of which i stayed a week and a half and spent a week of it reading several different books.

message 18: by Tristen (new)

Tristen (totallybookedsolid) | 4 comments Ok this might sound like a dumb question what is soo great about Powells? See I'm going to be in portland for the first time this thanksgivings and I will be visiting a Powells and just wondered why it was so great cause I live in oklahoma nd had never heard of it.

message 19: by Doina (new)

Doina | 58 comments It's not only the biggest independent bookstore in the world, but their selection of new and used books is amazing. It definitely has a better vibe than the major chain bookstores, and their staff can answer almost any question you have about books. I would recommend going to the downtown one.

message 20: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany | 14 comments Tristen --

When people say Powell's is the "biggest" independent bookstore, they mean it. The downtown store is the length (and width?) of a city block, and four (or maybe only 3) stories high in some parts--hence the name "City of Books." Sooooo many books! There are different "rooms" of genres (fiction, kids, history, etc.), all helpfully color-coded.

In addition to the main downtown store, there are 2 smaller stores in the area (although even one of the "smaller" stores is bigger than most bookstores), one at the airport, a technical books store, and a home & garden books store. And like Doina said, the staff is extremely helpful.

message 21: by Tristen (new)

Tristen (totallybookedsolid) | 4 comments Do you happen to have the address for the downtown powells? That would be so helpful. i'm so excited about finally getting to go. I'm saving money just for going to powells.

message 22: by Renee (new)

Renee The size of the store and its contents were amazing! The staff obviously knows their stuff AND enjoy their jobs. I took lots of photos of Powells - it's a serious landmark for book lovers!

message 23: by Doina (new)

Doina | 58 comments Powell's is in the Pearl District. The cross streets for the downtown location are Burnside and NW 10th Ave (Powell's technical book store is just a couple blocks east of there). The Streetcar stops right by it. (Burnside is the street that divides N and S, and the beginning of Alphabet city and the store is on the N side of the street). Ask anyone downtown and they'll be able to tell you. It's very easy to find because as Tiffany said, it takes over an entire city block.

Addresses, etc. for all of the stores. And yes, it's possible to do all of them in one day, with minimal rushing. Enjoy! :)

message 26: by Renee (new)

Renee Has anyone here visited The Strand Bookstore in NYC? It's not as big as Powell's and it doesn't have a cafe but it's a big beautiful bookstore that made my eyes water! : )

message 27: by Kay (new)

Kay You know you're an addict when you go on holiday and come back with an overloaded suitcase full of books....

And Renee yes that was at The Strand in NYC - I will be there again next month!

I would have to say you know you are a book addict when you go to the Mall of America and the first store you go to is Barnes and Noble...

and you keep looking for books on the Net, looking for friends in Goodreads, Shelfari... reading their blogs about books almost everyday.

tash (tashtwopointoh) | 1 comments When you can't decide which of the 5-8 books you are reading to read, so you read a chapter of each...

message 34: by pop (new)

pop If I know there is a movie of a book, I watch the movie first, then read the book. I know how they mess books up when they make movies, so to enjoy the movie at all, I have to see it first. I won't NOT read the book if the movie is a bust, most movies are really only so loosely based on the book, I don't know why they bother buying the book in the firs place.

message 35: by Gwen (new)

Gwen | 4 comments Very interesting as I always read the book first. Movies leave so much out and books don't come with pictures. But to understand the movie I need to read the book and together I get the full meaning the author is sending. gwen

message 36: by Gwen (new)

Gwen | 4 comments I read that JFK was leaving on a trip and had a bag packed with books. Someone asked him why so many books. He said 'I'll be gone for seven days so seven books is not too many'. I too take too many books when I'm away from home but they are my friends and comforter. One reason I like to include non-fiction books as they can be picked up at random and open to any page for a quick read. Gwen

message 37: by Tamara (new)

Tamara (tamara927) | 5 comments You know you are an addict when everyday you force yourself to drag back to the library two large over-stuffed tote bags full of books that you were sure you would read at least one renewal ago. Your arms absolutely ache from the weight of your addiction and you huff and puff to the door, bruising your thighs and straining your back and all the while you are racing to be the first one to cross over the golden threshold into the promised land of new reads. You also must return these books because you have 320 (just an estimate) others on the hold shelf to pick up before the hold expires and someone else may actually get to read the book before you... I am not guilty of this sick and twisted behavior.

message 38: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) You know you're a book addict when you are trecking through the Amazon jungle and you have to bring the hardback omnibus edition of the Forsyte Saga because you've already started. However, as I read each page I ripped it off and used it for... so it kind of made sense.

message 39: by Deanne (new)

Deanne Tamara
Have you been stalking me because you've described my visits to the library.

message 40: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) I tend to ignore people. And if they don't respect my polite methods of ignoring them, they get snapped at. I'm sorry, but not sorry enough to put down the book. kthnx.

Also: You know you're a book addict when your parents have resorted to "grounding" you from reading. It's been a few years since they've had that authority, but all the same.

message 41: by Jena (new)

Jena | 1 comments When you packed 8 books+comics+essentials in your carry on bag and then missed your connecting flight so you have to RUN across DFW (football field length) to catch the next one which leaves in 6 minutes so your backpack is flopping all around and people are laughing and you wind up missing it anyway and then you are sore for DAYS...but you are glad you still brought your books for the 3hr flight.

Also, you are on Goodreads constantly...

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

You know you're a book addict when....

you call books/reading your "drug" of choice. It's to the point now that I've been buying so many books they have taken over my both my coffee and kitchen table not to mention my home office.(My husband has asked me to "clean" 'cause if he has to I won't be happy. Erm, that's what he thinks: if he cleans he'll be miserable. For months. :P)

Also, the thrift store next door to my office just went out of business. I have acquired all of the paperback books. I know have even more books that I need to try to read. In this lifetime, preferably.

message 43: by Jess (new)

Jess I know that I am an addict because I totaled how much money I spent on books in just one months time and it was about 75.00. Ever since then, I keep buying books, I just don't keep track of how much I'm spending!

I also have no limit as to how many books I can read in a week. I think my highest total was up to like 7 books in a week. Awesome. Too bad my graduate work suffered, but I eventually got my work done. :)

message 44: by Mont'ster (new)

Mont'ster | 58 comments I was raised in the mid-west & a few years ago I was in Portland for a week long business conference. A co-worker said "I think I know a place you'll like" and she took me to Powell's. My reaction - "How have I never heard of this place before?!?"

My wife finally gave up on trying to stop me from buying used books (I pointed out how much we were saving over new books) and now she uses her flair for design to find inexpensive book shelves that match each room.

Most treasured family heirloom? Antique bookcases from one side of the family and a handmade bookcase from the other side of the family.

Every time I visit my parents, I leave with a book. Every time they come to visit they bring at least one book for someone in the family.

Most treasured childhood memory - Every year going to the huge Book Fairs in our town on opening day, finding cool books - buying a few and putting other books on the bottom of the stacks. Then going back on "Bargain Bag Day" (last day of the Book Fair) and filling our bags with our 'hidden' goodies that hadn't yet been taken.

Seems to me that Goodreads members are the most normal people I've encountered. (Aren't we? :-)

Eric_W (ericw) When your wife complains and worries that the walls will collapse on top of you some night from the weight of all the books on the bookshelves.

message 47: by Kate (new)

Kate | 18 comments You know you are a book addict when you look at your bookshelves and see empty spaces for more books - and your husband just sees full bookshelves.

Also, you know you are a book addict when you read a paragraph or two of whatever you are currently reading at stoplights (yes, that's me you are honking at). And when you think you might have a library problem because you request too many books and never worry about finishing them before they are due back.
