message 51: by Alan (new)

Alan Duggan (dugie) Just finished The Magicians' Guild and now i will be reading Storm Front

message 52: by Bryce Fischer (new)

Bryce Fischer I found the 2nd Mistborn book to be my least favorite of the series. But it does set up a lot of what happens in the final book, which I found to be my favorite.

Reading Way of Kings, but feel that will take me the entire month of October. I picked up the Dawning of Power trilogy from Brian Rathbone really cheaply for my Sony Reader. I'll probably start that if I finish Way of Kings.

message 53: by Arthur (last edited Oct 18, 2010 10:26AM) (new)

Arthur (astra) Finished 1984 by George Orwell
Depressing stuff and quite emotional, considering that I have experienced some of this dismal world for 18 years (xUSSR). On the other hand it is very much up-to-date. People are getting brainwashed today. Yesterday, absolutely everybody believed in Global Warming and if you didn't you were an enemy. Then in a blink of an eye Global Warming mutated into Climate Change. Again, everybody believes in it. They don't understand it, but they believe in it. They don't question it. They no longer have an ability/brain power to do it. They blindly believe/trust someone who allegedly knows more. Some who have retained the ability to question are the enemies. How many scientist who dared to voice their disbelieve in Global Warming were booed down by their colleagues and had to quit?

It is but one example.
That’s life, isn’t it?

To cheer up myself I have started
The Hero of Ages (Mistborn, #3) by Brandon Sanderson although, I am not sure whether it is much more positive than 1984...

message 54: by Joon (new)

Joon (everythingbeeps) Just reading Wheel of Time this month. Probably will finish two books (#2 and #3).

Just started Hero of Ages as well. :) Noo, the Mistborn books haven't been terribly uplifting, but I love em.

Stephanie (lamarquise) | 19 comments The Kite Runner might have been well written, but the subject matter really bothered me. I don't think I'd read it again.

On the positive side, I've been re-reading some of Katherine Kurtz's Deryni stories and remembering why I enjoyed a lot of things about them, even if I have no affection for the last couple she's put out.

Totally agree with you :)

message 58: by Adam (new)

Adam Franklin Just added StormFront to my TBR - I've heard good things about this series.

message 59: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments Two-thirds done with October and only one book officially read and reviewed! Sheesh, I must be getting lazy.

I finished Cryoburn (my review) yesterday. I almost wish it hadn't been such a quick read because there's no telling if another Miles Vorkosigan novel will get written or when.

I'm also almost finished with an anthology of Conan stories (see my status updates for mini-reviews of each one).

Late last night I started The Last Unicorn (my status updates), but only made it to page eight before nodding off (not because it wasn't riveting but more because I was up past my bed time). Since this is even shorter than Cryoburn, I anticipate finishing it before the weekend.

I still need to read Mansfield Park for a local book club gathering next week, so I may tackle that after The Last Unicorn.

Other online book club reads for this month and next can be found on my current-month book shelf.

message 60: by Margot (new)

Margot (freezebaby) I've finished Two Moon Princess, The Longest Trip Home CD: A Memoir, and Angelology so far. Am currently reading Club Dead, for a light break, and A Wolf at the Table: A Memoir. I also plan to read (hopefully) The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, Her Fearful Symmetry, and skim through Eat, Pray, Love for a book group (just read it a couple of months ago). A very mixed selection of books. Need to mix a little more fantasy in there, in the next couple of months, I think!

message 61: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments I finally finished Anathem which was certainly a weird experience, although enjoyable at times. My review. I also finished listening to The Last Light of the Sun, the most enjoyable Kay listen so far - http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I'm now 40% through the audio version of The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, which I'm ambivalent about so far. I've started War for the Oaks, which I found very predictable, but is recently looking up.

After Anathem, I thought I needed a romance as it was so bloodless and emotionless, so I started Flowers from the Storm on my Nook, and have also proceeded with Mordant's Need, an edition with both of Donaldson's books about Mordant included.

I don't know why I'm reading so many books at one time. Perhaps in frustration after reading a few that are merely 'meh'.

message 62: by John (last edited Oct 21, 2010 11:08AM) (new)

John Fortune (noblejohn) | 13 comments I don't know if audio is fround on, but I am listening to The Way of Kings. I am about half way through. Great narration. Two readerson this one - one male one female - Kate Reading using her "American" accent.

The story is a little slow - there are a lot of details and not a whole lot of events for the amount of hours. But I am still enjoying it. There are some good characters, some moral dilemmas and some action.

I did get confused about a certain chapter in the middle of the book where they were describing the mushy ground/grass and the trading techniques of a certain race - how they downplayed their goods when haggling.. It seemed out of place. I might have been distracted during that part of the book.

So far I recommend the book.

I found it slow until about p. 800. I know the chapter you're talking about and never have figured out why it was in the book, and only once.

message 64: by Hyunsung (last edited Oct 22, 2010 05:56PM) (new)

Hyunsung Jin (dummy13) I`m reading the "Chronicles of the Necromancer" series.
The story is a little typical, but it`s a good page turner.

message 65: by Adam (new)

Adam Franklin John - I'm glad to hear Way of the Kings has "good narrators" - I usually read but from time to time I do listen to books and nothing bothers mem more than voice talent that doesn't "mesh up". There were a few books that I started as audio and had to go and read them because the voice grated on me.

Yes, I believe the narrators for The Way of Kings are married. I read about them on a blog somewhere. The male reader, Michael Kramer reads the Mistborne trilogy and they both also team up to read some of the wheel of time stuff I believe.

I am 3/4 of the way through the book now and still enjoying it. It is getting a little bit more interesting now.

Book is great, narrators are great too.

message 67: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Reading Two Moon PRincess and The Way of the King

message 68: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments I finished War for the Oaks, which was lovely; and I finished The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, finally! The latter was 'meh'. I found the narrator quite good, but the story predictable, the technology dated, and the writing style problematic. One could almost see it as a fantasy, as any relation to science today was remote. I'm sure I read Heinlein in high school, but don't remember anything specific.

I'm now listening to Janny Wurts' Keeper of the Keys, #2 in the Cycle of Fire series recently released at Audible. The saga continues, and it's quite good. Am also continuing with Mordant's Need, another brick of a book like TWOK. It's much better, however. The story is very unique and imaginative. The heroine is slowly waking up and one only hopes she shakes herself out of her passive uncertainty soon. :)

I hope you enjoy it - it's one I like. It is very sort of cliche, but well written enough for me to not mind.

message 70: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Finished Summer Knight by Jim Butcher yesterday. I think it's my least favorite Dresden Files book so far. I just don't think I cared as much for the plot this time around. I liked the ending though.

Now I've started Wintertide by Michael J. Sullivan.

message 71: by Adam (last edited Oct 26, 2010 01:13AM) (new)

Adam Franklin Hey Elise - I'm so jealous that you are reading Wintertide!! Don't tell me anything -- I just finished Avempartha and LOVED IT. What is most amazing to me is I enjoyed The Crown Conspiracy so much that I figured Avempartha would disappoint (as most second books in series usually do) but it actually is a bit better (IMO) than the first and I really didn't think that was possible.

For those who have not tried the Riyria Revelations - DO IT -- especially since I saw somewhere on this site that Avemapartha is free right now (not sure when the offer ends).

I really want to start with Nyphron Rising - especially after the last line in Avempartha but I promised someone else my next book will be Name of the Wind so I'll have to wait a bit.

Oh - and wave Robin - tell your husband he gave me hours of enjoyment and I'm looking forward to more.

message 72: by Bryce Fischer (new)

Bryce Fischer So many people have enjoyed The Crown Conspiracy, I may be adding that as my next read. I probably won't finish The Way of Kings until November, so that will be next month's reading item. I've heard good things about The Lies of Locke Lamora but it doesn't seem to be available in ebook format...

message 73: by Bryce Fischer (new)

Bryce Fischer Well, The Lies of Locke Lamora appears to be available as Kindle, but not in Sony Reader format (ePub). I could read that on my cell phone though...

message 74: by Bryce Fischer (new)

Bryce Fischer arrrg... well, its available on the Sony Reader store, but I prefer to use other stores....

message 75: by Dija (new)

Dija Currently reading Passion Unleashed (Demonica, #3) by Larissa Ione . These books just keep getting better and better!

I think you'll find the series gets progressively better as it goes along, but I think I still consider Avempartha my personal favorite so far. :)

Yes it is. I got it from B&N. that's epub.

message 78: by Adam (new)

Adam Franklin Just started NotW - came highly recommended by someone her on GoodReads and in peaking though some others shelves it consistently gets good ratings - so I think will be a winner.

Finihsed up Avempartha - both it and The Crown Conspiracy are excellent reads and I highly recommend them.

message 79: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Adam - you'll love Name of the Wind - a great read!!

message 80: by Dija (new)

Dija Finished Venom (Elemental Assassin, #3) by Jennifer Estep and now reading Blameless (The Parasol Protectorate, #3) by Gail Carriger

message 81: by [deleted user] (new)

message 82: by Tiphaine (new)

Tiphaine | 3 comments Just finished The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks , I loved it! i can't wait to read the nexxt one!

message 83: by Aaron (new)

Aaron Reading The Blood of Elves (The 2nd Witcher book, but first in the series), a very good read... And also The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks... its hard 2 get into but I've heard it will get better soon =]

message 84: by Nita (new)

Nita (gillnit) Finished and adored The Way of Kings. Can't wait to discuss it next month.
Now reading Crown of Crystal Flame. The last book of a great romantic fantasy series.

message 85: by Ruby (new)

Ruby Hollyberry I'm reading The Ammonite Violin & Others by Caitlín R. Kiernan , which is amazing. I also have two fairly fluffy fantasy trilogies to finish, one adult and one children's. I've read the first book of each, and just ordered the second and third. The trilogies are:

The Ash Staff (The Ash Staff series, book 1) by Paul R. Fisher The Hawks of Fellheath (The Ash Staff, book 2) by Paul R. Fisher The Princess and the Thorn (The Ash Staff series, book 3) by Paul R. Fisher

The Charmed Sphere (Lost Continent, #1) by Catherine Asaro The Misted Cliffs (Lost Continent, #2) by Catherine Asaro The Dawn Star (Lost Continent, #3) by Catherine Asaro

message 86: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (rocalisa) | 46 comments Ruby, the Catherine Asaro series actually has another two books in it as well. They are
The Fire Opal and The Night Bird.

message 87: by Ruby (new)

Ruby Hollyberry Nice to know! I could tell The Fire Opal was in the same world - just didn't look like it was on the same continuum. I'll put the other one on my list as well. Thanks!
