Is Jem just an animal lover, or was there something deeper to it when he rescued Church? Like, did he see something special in Church, or something? Why is the cat immortal? Kind of makes me think of Salem in Sabrina the Teenaged Witch. Maybe what I should be asking is if Church is important at all?
Jem is an animal lover. Church is also special and has a way of communicating with those humans he likes.

1) I already answered the "where did you get the idea for Mortal Instruments" question — in a more general sense, there is no magical well or place of inspiration writers have access to and other people don't. Mostly we sit around and we think really hard and then we write down what we thought up. :)
2) This is like asking "why is your cat your cat and not some other cat?" I didn't choose to write a story about these characters. I chose to write a story and the characters evolved into the characters you know along the way.
3) "And will write any other books after the the mortal instruments and the infernal devices are done?"
I'm a writer, it's what I do. I will write books until I am forced to stop.

You know, no, not really. She's had Simon since 1st grade or so, so probably she's thought guys were cute here and there but nothing serious.

Oh in some youtube interview i thought you said Simon was your favorite sorry.
You didnt answer question part 2 :D Out of all your books, which scene was the most difficult to write?

"Does the title city of lost souls have to do with jace because the mark of death is on him?"
The mark of death just means he was dead and came back. He didn't come back without his soul.
"why does it seem like jocelyn does not like Jace in the mortal instrument series?"
It's pretty much covered in the teaser chapter in CoG, but she doesn't like him pulling Clary into the Shadowhunter life and worries Clary is too intense with her relationship with him.

Cassandra, I must say the Dark Sisters were very creepy. I love a good villain you can dislike from the start and two is better. Also, until close to the end I didn't peg Mortmain as the Magister. I love it when an author throws in a twist I can't see coming until the end. :) I was curious however, is the reason Mortmain wanted to marry Tessa because at the time (late 1800's) men pretty much owned their wives or is there another reason that will be revealed later?

Thank you so much for answering my questions earlier! I don't really have anything new to add... (most of my questions would be REALLY spoiler-y, and I mean 'Can you tell me the whole plot for the rest of your books' spoiler-y). But I just wanted to comment on something. It seems that everyone is really concerned about how Will is currently a total jerk and they're afraid that he's just going to stay that way. To all those people, I'd go back and look at the scene where he thinks Tessa is dead. You get a glimpse at the real Will, not the one pushing everyone away. I have faith that you'll let us see more of him eventually, Miss Clare! :D
And thanks again!

- I know I might not get an answer, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. There's no chance that Tessa is some kind of clockwork machine, is there?

One question I have is whether or not Clary is living in NYC with her mom in the apartment. Did she quit normal school and start training with Jace, etc?

I had actually been thinking along the same lines, since no one seems to really know what exactly she is. I think I was channeling Will Smith from I Robot, though.

*****Clockwork Angel Spoiler(small spoiler, but if you haven't read it, don't read)*****
What are the chances of Jem making it to age 30? (If he manages to escape death from fighting and things like that) Mostly I'm talking about his disease that he has. So if possible could you put it in % Thank you~

Hi, I'm majorly obsessed with TMI and TID, I love your books.
Mortmain kept saying he "created" Tessa, and as he's not her father, it got me wondering if there's a chance that Tessa might be a clockwork creature created by Mortmain. But she bleeds and seems human. So what did Mortmain mean?
I know you probably can't reveal too much, but is there anything you can clarify now?
Thanks!!

I'd like to meet someone who doesn't like Jace! I'd set them straight. ;)
I know that you put up the link to which character is depicted on the covers of the series, but I'd like to know who the models are. :) I've read all your responses so far and I don't remember you answering that. If you have i'm sorry!

hey, i LOVE your books and you are my favorite author in the world! I also love how you use phrases in different languages in your books! I have a few more questions though!
1) Is johnathan(sebastain) really dead? Beacause in the book it says that they never found his body
2) Are you infleunced by other books or things? because names like blackwell, pangborn and trueblood sound familiar.
3) If Will Herondale and Gabriel Lightwood hate each other why are Jace and Isabelle and Alec friends?
4) Has Jace "Fallen in Love with the wrong person" yet?
hope you know, your one of the funniest authors ever!

I guess I would say, if Mortmain had the technology to create an automaton so sophisticated that it didn't even know it was one, why is he doofing around with these much lesser models? Of course perhaps Tessa was created by someone else, and what Mortmain is after is the secret of how they did it .... ;)

Will the reasons about why Sophie loves Jem be answered? Like when, how, and why. Mostly I'm just curious about when.

If a cure isn't found for Jem's disease, he's got max about four, five years to live.

Well, "owning" Tessa is part of it, but basically you need to know more to understand what he wants.

It is hinted at the end of CA, that Tessa has another power, besides the shapeshifting. No chance you can tell us something about it is there?

I think Will is somehow cursed. Something along the lines of "Anyone I love will die/have something terrible befall them." It would explain why he pushes people away purposefully, but seems to be torturing himself every time he does it. It would also explain him saying "I have lost everything" after Tessa convinces him he's alive-- he's afraid that he let some of his love seep through and is worried that his curse will affect her. And then he tries to turn love into lust, with that scene towards the end, to save her, but hates himself for hurting her.
*flails* This isn't really a question. I don't want to know. Well, I do. But I don't! But I have to know! No, no, I should wait. But...

I had a similar theory about the curse. It would explain why he tends to push away the people he cares most about.

1) Hope spring eternal, huh? Sebastian's got demon blood - perhaps his body vanished when he died as dead demons do.
2)"Are you infleunced by other books or things? because names like blackwell, pangborn and trueblood sound familiar."
While I am certainly influenced by lots of things, perhaps those names sound familiar to you because they are actual last names? And True Blood is a TV show, but since the name Trueblood appears in City of Bones, published in 2007, and True Blood premiered in 2008, it's unlikely that that was the inspiration, much as I would love to spread the rumor that I can see into the future.
3)"If Will Herondale and Gabriel Lightwood hate each other why are Jace and Isabelle and Alec friends?"
Because it's been a hundred and fifty years and there's no reason Alec and Jace would care what Will and Gabriel thought about each other 150 years ago? Besides, who says they stay enemies?

Since Tessa is immortal and won't die, doesn't that mean she'll end up alone? Will or Jem won't age and die so will Tessa end up like Magnus, with a lot of other lovers? Or will there be some way around the immortality issue so that whoever she ends up with can be with her forever?
Thanks :)

You mean, like, how long has she loved him? Pretty much since she's been there. As for why — I feel reluctant to answer that because 1) Love isn't math – it doesn't necessarily follow a formula, sometimes it just is and 2) Why wouldn't she love him? I'm just curious why you think reasons need to be produced beyond the ones you can intuit from the story.

Oh, and there were a few references to a box Will opened when he was younger. The box in question: would it maybe be a Pyxis? And if so, I wonder who helped him open it (since it takes two to open one); perhaps Cicely? And if it was Cicely, did she die when it was opened? It makes me wonder if she was his sister/childhood friend. I'm thinking sister since he has been avoiding his family; which would make sense if he felt responsible for his sister's death.

In which case Nate and Aunt Harriet would also be Shadowhunters. Just to keep in mind. :>

the clockwork angel just has a significant appearance on CA once. Will it be more important in Clockwork Prince? Also are there a clockwork Prince and a Clockwork Princess like the angel?

Ehehe, you're quite correct about that. I mostly asked that question because I'm a person that likes things to be explained to her (MATH) usually shown, told, whatnot in writing. Because for some reason I'm like that. ^o^; But I suppose if I needed to show an example, I'd probably say about how like Peeta from The Hunger Games told Katniss about why he started liking her from the first time he met and stuff. Pretty much that really.

"if De Quincey DID destroy all Shadowhunters in London, wouldn't more come from the rest of the world to replace them?"
...Yes? I'm sorry, I'm sort of lost here. De Quincey never was the author of this big destroy the Shadowhunters plan anyway. That was a red herring.

Yes, the angel comes back and is explained more, yes there is a prince and princess; they are characters (that you already know) and the titles are more figurative than literal.

SPOILERS for Clockwork Angel and City of Glass...
1) In an interview, you said that when Tessa saw Jace at the end of City of Glass it was a bit like seeing a ghost. Since you've also confirmed that Jace and Will are related (though possibly not directly), does it follow that Jace looks like Will? Or could there be someone else whom Jace resembles that would be so striking to Tessa?
2) Can you provide any details about Jem's feelings for Sophie?
3) Is the box that Jace receives from Amatis the same box from Will's memories? I noticed it had birds (herons?) on it. Would the design on the box be similar to the design on Will's ring?
I'm curious about Magnus's reasons for wanting the White Book...

There's a whole conversation in the teaser itself about why Jocelyn doesn't like Jace. I don't know what I could add to it. She's afraid he'll drag Clary into the Shadowhunter world, afraid he'll be like Valentine, etc.
