Margo | 663 comments Okay Ladies, first I am really fascinated about Fat Tuesday 'cause in Poland we have Fat Thursday. Wikipedia says that is similar to Mardi Gras (I just had to find it :) ) but beside the fact that it's a day that people make or buy doughnuts, I never thought anything about it. And I'm not talking about one doughnut or two. I'm talking about 10 and more. It's crazy! And everywhere you go on that day, to the office or bank or even to the mechanic, you will be served doughnuts. Believe me, after a day like that I avoid doughnuts for a whole year :) Wikipedia says that from a traditional point of view Fat Thursday is a traditional Catholic feast marking the last Thursday before Lent and is associated with the celebration of Carnival. Because Lent is a time of fasting, the next opportunity to feast would not be until Easter. So like I said, interesting

About getting friend invitation from authors, truth to be told, I don't mind at all. Sometimes it gives me new ideas what to read and not all the books are bad. Thanks to them I sometimes buy a book, I normally wouldn't have bought 'cause I wouldn't no about it. So I really don't mind.

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Huh, interesting!

Also it's a cicada hatching year. It's very unnerving and the noise is relentless. I think it's freaking my cat out.

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I liked lent when I lived near new orleans ... meant more catfish. I have a weakness for seafood and catfish ... I so miss having a popeye's on every corner. They had the best popcorn shrimp and fried catfish meals. I guess their chicken was okay I didn't eat it ... there are no good popeyes here. I will make due with sonics and jack in the box. They didn't have those back there.
It sounds like I might eat a lot of fast food, but I don't think I do more than once a month if even that. DQ and sonic are grand for their blizzards and drinks. I love rassberry green tea.

As for author friend requests ... a lot of the time I miss friend requests to begin with so oopsies!
I checked my friend requests and apparently I have one from a few months back that I did not rply to....
I miss them if the email that I got is with a name I don't know I forget about it pretty fast.

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I don't like catfish. It's, like, slimy. Urgh.

message 1555: by Alina (new)

Alina (lialinali) | 107 comments @Margo- It sounds like Hanooka in Israel but we eat "sufganiot"-it just a crazy name for doughnuts without holes...and we eat them for 8 days which is really unhealthy but sometimes fun :)

@Claire- maybe he is really shy (like me ) and he want to befriend with some nice ppl?

message 1556: by Margo (last edited May 27, 2013 01:55PM) (new)

Margo | 663 comments 8 days??? I can't stand 1 day. I just don't know what to say to that. I like sweet things, especially chocolate, which is the reason I don't buy it too often, LOL :D, but after 8 days of doughnuts, even if it would be only one doughnut per day, I wouldn't be able to look at them ever again.

message 1557: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments @ claire:
Youse crazy ... breaded and fried catfish is not slimy. Catching and cleaning one is though ... they are slimy fish ... hell cleaning any fish can be slimy.

I think that my dad would have a field day with the doughnut holiday....

People have weird traditions. NOLA is full of weird ones ... like having a parade where they throw potatos... Yes I typed that right.

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments My friend from Kentucky mentioned something about a potato festival.

La la la my aunt and uncle are coming up from Alabama tomorrow and I am SO EXCITED.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments I was reading in the news about that cheese rolling thing they do somewhere in England every May. Every year they roll a big cheese down a hill and a bunch of people chase it. They tried to shut it down because there were do many injuries and broken bones, but the cheese chasers will not be denied!

Aren't local customs quaint! :D

message 1560: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments You Brits are positively batty

Mello ❣ Illium ✮Harry✮ ☀Myrnin☀ Torin Ichimaru | 2012 comments Cheese chasers? That sounds like the ruining of perfectly good cheese.

message 1562: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Right??

message 1564: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Cheese is sturdy, it can take it.

I remember seeing something about this a long time ago ... giant wheels of cheese rollin' down a hill or something?

I'd be worried if dorks tried to chase blocks of cheese....

message 1565: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments There's some videos on YouTube, like this one ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tHzj...

It's basically just a bunch of crazies throwing themselves down a hill in pursuit of a cheese. Hey, it keeps them off the streets, you know? I think it tends to involve rugby players who are, to a man, completely crazy.

Llaph, you basically have the gist of it. Just throw in a large crowd cheering them on and some stretchers and first aid people and you have it!! :D

message 1566: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I am remembering this chasing being done on a steep hill though. Is that what is in the video?

People are crazy, that is a given. :x

message 1567: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Yup, it's a steep grassy hill and they pretty much throw themselves down it. I hope the winners at least get to keep the cheese at the end, in exchange for risking life and limb. I think the crowds only turn up in the hope of seeing some particularly horrific injuries LOL!

It's nuts but it's funny too. And the only people they're harming are themselves, so have it!

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Oh god, I am sure that there is a lot of weird crap that americans do.... I wish that I could think of one as an example right now, but my brain is fried.

Someone explain to me why my exercise app that measures distance/time records a longer distance for me when I walk slower and a shorter one when I walk fast.

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments We were just talking about Marci gras ;) and our infatuation with needs and other on that day... Lol

I forgot to tell you guys I am on a 3 week "time zones of continental USA" vacation. I live in mountain time, el Paso. Just came to east coast in Baltimore/dc, then going to west coast LA. final destination is Austin, TX, central time zone. Lol

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Eeeeeee Amelia graduated from high school this morning!!! She gave a really great welcome speech. Everyone was very impressed (as they should be; my little sister is fabulous).

It just made me remember when I graduated (back in 2011, so long ago, I know.) You all line up outside the chapel, and everyone is dead quiet. Then they ring this huge old bell as you get ready to walk in. And the bell is deafeningly loud and deep. It feels like you're going off to war, I swear. It's just totally magical.

message 1580: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Claire, it sounds amazing and memorable. I hope your sister had a ball.

Zeenat, glad you're having a good time. It's great to wander about by yourself sometimes just chilling. :)

message 1581: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments It was awesome. Amelia said she felt empty afterward. Which I totally understand; we've been visiting that school since we were 8 because of our mom. It's like a second home.

Do you guys get cicadas where you are? We're currently experiencing one of the great 17 year swarms. The noise outside at midday is positively deafening. Every single tree is absolutely stuffed full of them. (it's terrifying)

message 1582: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments That reminds me of a vacation that I took near pigeon forge, TN (no I did not go to Dollywood) During the day it was normal ... then at night if I went outside of the cabin it was freakin' loud with whatever was making that noise. Sounded like a chorus of crickets, frogs, and weirdos.

message 1583: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments We don't get cicadas round here, and I'm not sorry!! Regular bugs are bad enough. I can do without noisy bugs.

Nature is best viewed on television! ;)

Maggie (lacr1mation) Ladies, pls tell me if I am overreacting? I have 9 month old twins. We have a baby sitter that comes twice a week for about half a day. so I can tcob. she has recently started bringing her 4 year old daughter. her kid is cute. but!!! she is destroying my sons books!!! (I know! a 9 month old can't read.) this is causing me some grief. cos I love books & my boys. am I being a jerk? do books fall into the"posessions are fleeting" catagory?

message 1585: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I am not the best person to give advice about this sort of thing ... but damn it is your stuff. The kid is 4? shouldn't t they have more respect for other people's things?

I am rather picky about this sort of thing and will admit to not knowing much about kids. My mom would have beat my ass for messing someone else's stuff up though.

I would probably just put them away and only leave out board books that hold up better.

message 1587: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Maggie wrote: "do books fall into the"posessions are fleeting" catagory? "

Absolutely not!!

I have little experience with kids and child minders either, but you should tell the child minder to bring her own books for her kid to play with. She can destroy her own property if she wants. It's inconsiderate of her to allow her child to destroy yours.

message 1588: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments ^^ what she said minus her weirdo foreign slang

message 1589: by Jax (new)

Jax | 831 comments No, You're not over-reacting at all Maggie!

1. Books should ALWAYS be treated with respect! And I have no patience for parents who don't teach their kids manners. (Age is NOT an excuse!)

2.If she cannot control her child, she shouldn't be bringing her to other peoples houses. And She should most definitely NOT let her mess with other peoples belongings!

You shouldn't have to hide your stuff away just to get a little me time.

I'd talk to your baby-sitter about it. If she doesn't like, perhaps its time for a new baby-sitter.

message 1590: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (lacr1mation) Thanks for the advice ladies. :) Gonna have to put the smack down!

message 1591: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Agreed with everything said above! No one should be destroying your property.

Oh god I got divebombed by a cicada today when I was at a peony garden. The damn thing flew into my hair! It was terrifying. They're HUGE bugs. With red eyes. Ick.

message 1592: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I usually hate stinging insects because of the buzzing, and the sting duh, but omg I hate june bugs. They are big, mean, beetle things. I hated those when I lived in so cal. They were pretty to look @ if they were farfarfar away.

So more proof that my dog she-ra is a special kind of stupid.

She barks at animals on tv, dogs, donkies, most four legged animals, except penguins she won't bark at those, but she gets pissed when a sea lion is on tv. We have a flat screen in the living room mounted to a wall and a chest below to hold stuff, I haven't looked I just try not to hit it on my way to the kitchen. It is about knee high, guess how I know that, and it is the perfect size for her to put her front paws up onto and bark/growl at the tv. The other day there was a sea lion on tv and she got pissed and was growling at it, got up onto the chest and was I guess showing it who was boss.

The stupid part of it all?

When the commercial or whatever the animal was on goes off on the living room tv she runs into my mom's bedroom to see if it showed up on that tv. If she was watching tv there she has been known to run out into the dining room to see if the animal will show up there, the dining room wall is shared with the wall in my mom's bedroom that has the tv....

Alina (lialinali) | 107 comments While I do not like bugs I hate mosquitoes!!!! These "flying cows" don't stop stinging me ....ARG (:S)

message 1594: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Mosquitoes generally leave me alone. I hate these cicadas. They don't bite but their sheer size is alarming.

message 1595: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Nothing more fun that something giant and chitenous heading for your hair ... slowly.

message 1596: by Missdevora (new)

Missdevora | 2142 comments I also hate the dumb tiny fruit flies that fly around and around like they are drugged. Gah I hate them!!!

message 1597: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments gahhh that reminds me of love bugs from when I still lived in louisiana. They showed up more around the nw part of the lake by my ex bf's parent's house in the boonies. They are slow and there are so many of them. They mostly are like mating or something so they fly around slow with their asses connected to each other. Driving your car down the higheway made your car a mess from how many you hit otw through. I particularly remember when we evac'd to his parents house for katrina. It was f'ing hot with no power so we sat on the porch to keep cool ... those f'ing bugs were EVERYWHERE it was disgusting. Hell that whole time was an uncomfortable mess to be honest.

message 1598: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Wilson | 404 comments Maggie wrote: "Thanks for the advice ladies. :) Gonna have to put the smack down!"

I have to say some 4 year olds will be hard on books. All kids are different and it not always for lack of the parents trying. It may be the daughter is feeling left out because of the time spent with your kids or her fine motor skills aren't great so I wouldn't be rude about the child. Now if I was the babysitter and my kid was doing that I would put the books up so my kid wouldn't ruin them. If you're watching two infants you can easily miss a hard pull on a page. I'm not confrontational so in your place I would only leave out the board books. You can talk to the babysitter but she might just have to put up the books. If her eyes aren't on her child every minute something could happen and it may just be an accident.

message 1599: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (lacr1mation) @Llaph, I live in FL. There is a theory that those nasty ass lovebugs were made by UCF. As a science experiment. the only bugs that can reduce me to grossed out tears are moths & roaches. I grew up I Denver. About 1990 there was an insane moth infestation. If we had to go outside @ night, we would have to wear ski masks. (the moths would drive bomb you.) no. I'm not kidding. 0_o

message 1600: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (lacr1mation) @Sarah, I do not plan on being rude. But, there have been too many thing destroyed for it to be a complete coincidence. The things that I am worried about are the books mostly. lol.
