message 57: by Laura (new)

Laura (highlandhussy) | 654 comments ooh, Karen Marie Moning is one of my all-time faves. Hope you like it (although that book is usually most peoples' least-fave in the series)

Christina (christinagilmer) Hello Everyone. I am new to the group. My name is Chrissy. I live in Baltimore with my family. I write mysteries and romance (none published yet lol) I am also a book reviewer at http://www.examiner.com/books-in-balt... I've also had one of my pieces published in the Gunpowder Review in November.

message 62: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) Hi Marie,
welcome to our group. You are lucky to live in Scotland. If i could, I would go in a skinny minute, but health problems and finances make it nearly impossible. Plus i am terrified of flying, but if someone paid it, I would be sore tempted. I recently had DNA done, and I do have some Scot in my ancestry.

Jocelin | 288 comments Welcome to Chrissy & Marie. I hope you ladies enjoy being in our fantastic group. (can I say that it is one of the best groups on Goodreads without being conceited?). Hope you guys have a great New Year.

Anne (spartandax) I have read all of Kathleen's books. It is so tragic that she died at age 60 when she had written 8(i think) books. I wonder how many more she would have written.:(

Anne I totally agree. Do you know if she wrote the love story between Margaret's little sister and the man she meets when she travels with Margaret to court [On a Highland Shore]?

message 69: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) I really don't know. I read all her books, and I think she left some things hanging. I don't know how she died, but being so young, sho could have had plans for future books. such a loss.

message 70: by Pria (new)

Pria | 10 comments i was not a fan of historical romances but julie garwood's The Bride (Lairds' Fiancées, #1) by Julie Garwood was so much hyped that i thought of taking a look. the book definitely justified the hype. and i had to read all highland series of garwood and they were amazing. i did read other historical romances of hers but they couldn't not stand up to the level of highland romances. now the problem is she has ruined me for any other book or author. i just don't seem to like any other highland books (or authors) :(

message 71: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) Novy, try Monica mcCarty. I doubt you will be disappointed.

Pria | 10 comments thanks. i'm currently reading Highlander Untamed (MacLeods of Skye Trilogy, #1) by Monica McCarty . it's going good :) . thanks once again.

Becky Banks (beckybanks) Anne wrote: "Novy, try Monica mcCarty. I doubt you will be disappointed. ."

So I grabbed The Chief The Chief (Highland Guard, #1) by Monica McCarty after your recommendation - GOOD. I like the fact that there's a ton of history stuffed into the novel as well as having the emotional pull of the main characters. I normally don't get super pumped at series but VERY glad there's more to these as she sets it up nicely that we'll see the love stories for each of the Highland Guardsmen. *giant grin*

Jocelin | 288 comments Hi! Becky welcome to our group. I hope you enjoy and look forward to reading your comments. Wow, I can't believe how many authors we have in our group. This is so exciting.

message 77: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) I'm glad you like it, Becky. And welcome. I love books that are historical as well as romantic. You could also try Marsham Canham, one of my favorites. she has written three books that take place in Scotland as well as other great historicals, like "Pale Moon Rider", a hywayman story.

Pale Moon Rider . . . that reminds me of the Loreena McKennitt song about the highway men. Let me see if I can find it...

Welcome Storm. I love Scotland and enjoy reading about Highlanders from any era, so will pretty much read anything I can get my hands on.

A few of my favourite authors are:-
Diana Gabaldon (Jamie Fraser is the ultimate highland hero), Monica McCarty, Mary Wine, Teresa Reasor, Paula Quinn, Jennifer Ashley, Margaret Mallory, Michelle Willingham. Julianne MacLean and Maya Banks have had some recently releases that I really enjoyed also. That's a few off the top of my head, there are many many more.

Diana's Outlander series is my favourite, they are very complex and have a wonderful mix of fact and fiction. I've loaned them over the years to many many friends and family and have only ever had one friend that after reading the first didn't want to continue with the series. There is one rather violent event at the end of the first book that is hard for some to stomach but if you continue with the series I think you'll understand why the author put it in. Can you borrow the first from a library, that way you'll get a taste of whether you like it before you spend the $$.
