Phil | 11837 comments Fire departments with full-time employees often have shifts of 24 hours on, 24 hours off, with a Kelly day each week (an extra 24 hours off). That's a long shift. Does anyone here begrudge them an opportunity to get food?

When on-duty firemen need to get food, I have no issues with them using the truck to get to the store. It could make the difference in response time if they get a call.

Jim | 6484 comments Or todays world someone would probably record you on their phone and post it on the internet.

message 305: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Not at the drive in here. The phone would be taken away and you'd be permanently banned, and possibly put in the stocks first. I saw a guy kicked out half an hour before the movies started just for taking a picture of his girlfriend at the refreshment stand.

The rules:
In order to keep the Bengie's a fun, safe place, and to help us conduct an orderly operation, Patrons agree by entering this theatre (by reading and understanding the sign at the Box Office) to OBEY OUR HOUSE RULES.

Violation of any rule WILL RESULT in expulsion without refund.

You MAY NOT PHOTOGRAPH or VIDEOTAPE, or RECORD in ANY way on the premises. Please do not attempt to skirt this rule, the media WILL BE CONFISCATED, and you will leave without a refund. See FAQ page for all of the reasons.

Once more for clarity: If we see any sort of camera, video recorder, or cell phone with the capabilities of taking pictures, you and the party with you, will leave immediately without a refund. NONE of these DEVICES may be used AT this theatre FOR ANY REASON. See FAQ page for all of the reasons.

* Violation of any rule WILL RESULT in expulsion without refund.
* RETAIN YOUR TICKETS. Do NOT discard stubs! There are no refunds, but they are proof of entry.
* If you leave the theatre, YOU MUST PAY TO RE-ENTER.
* The SPEED LIMIT is 5MPH, NO WARNINGS!!
* You MUST be in control of your Vehicle lights. If you cannot extinguish the light, you must cover it, and not remove cover until you are at the exit gate. (We recommend that you bring some brown paper or newspaper and masking tape and carefully covering your lights before entering - please remember to remove the covering before you exit the theatre making sure that you are facing away from the giant screen when you are doing so). There may also be instructions on turning off your daytime running lights in your car's operating manual. We admit the vehicle at the box office only if the vehicle's headlights and daytime running lights are out (use parking lights only). If these lights come on ANYTIME AFTER ENTRY YOU MUST COVER THE LIGHTS.
* VANS, TRUCKS, HIGHTOPS & MPV'S must park in designated areas, or ramp 10, or even numbered rows BEHIND 10, DEPENDING ON WHAT IS OPEN.
* Lift gates & doors CAN NOT BE RAISED higher than the top clearance of the vehicle.
* Do Not Place Anything on top of your vehicle INCLUDING People.
* If you are enjoying the show outdoors please be courteous to other patrons and sit between the vehicle and the screen, Not beside it. (stay within your space)

We will offer this option: You must purchase a permit to bring outside food &/or beverage at the box office BEFORE YOU ENTER the theatre. As per conditions of the permit, You may not share food or drink with persons who came in other vehicles. PLEASE NOTE: The cost of the OUTSIDE FOOD AND BEVERAGE PERMIT is $7.00.

Jim | 6484 comments That's quite a list of rules.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Wow, way to spell things out. They sound burnt out on enforcing those rules.

message 308: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Just a couple of really, really stringent older folks, presumably the owners. It's a little unreasonable. We got yelled at twice the one and only time we went: once for going over 5 mph ("I saw your brake lights as you went over the speed bump. If you had to brake, you were going too fast.") and once for parking our Cube in a car spot instead of an SUV spot ("If your license plate has an M in it, you belong in the SUV spots. I don't care what kind of car it is.")

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments Sara, you have a drive-in? About ten years ago, I tried finding a drive-in within 200 miles of here. No luck. I was thinking more of a relaxing evening in the open air. Those rules would kill any fun you were thinking of having.

The story is sad, and probably this women should have gotten a break, but the headline is not exactly accurate. The jury convicted her of "tampering with court records," not sending her kids to a good school.

message 319: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Sorry, but that story is VERY biased. The woman knowingly falsified all kinds of forms to send her kids to a different school, and since she's trying to get a teaching degree, she knew better.

Jackie, I agree that the way we fund our schools is a disgrace, and Ohio is one of the worst offenders, but that doesn't give this woman an automatic out from what she did.

message 320: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments A Utah state legislator (Chris Buttars, the laughingstock of all thinking people) has advanced a resolution to take control of schools away from the Utah State School Board and give it to the legislature.

Why?

Because state education leaders are "advocating for contraception, socialism and other values contrary to those of the state."

YOU FUCKING ASS-HAT.

message 321: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments One Salt Lake City school district uses pictures of various types of contraceptives in their Health program. They are not (by state law) allowed to discuss contraception. ASSININE! Horny teenagers need to KNOW this stuff. But even the pictures upset this fucktard.

The district also offers an IB (International Baccalaureate) program in seven high schools. Mr. Buttars believes that program promotes socialism because it takes more of a world view than the standard curriculum.

I absolutely LOVE IB programs, and I think this legislature is an embarrassment to the state.

Female doctors earn less than male doctors -- and that's a good thing, researchers say

http://www.latimes.com/health/booster...

The answer, they speculate, is that women are choosing lower-paying jobs on purpose because they offer greater flexibility in hours and are generally more family-friendly.

You lost me. It's a good thing that women doctors are being paid less than men doctors, because family-friendly flexibility is a good thing? Why then isn't it a good thing for men doctors, who presumably have families too? Why is this low-pay, high-flexibility thing a burden to be borne by women? Do we even know that the women with lower pay have families? No, we actually don't have any hard data, the article admits. Win one for useless speculation.

Phil | 11837 comments So far this session, the Utah legislature has (among other things):

-- Decided that school board elections should be partisan

-- Decided that the state does not need "concealed carry" permits. Any person without a criminal record or history of mental illness may carry a loaded, concealed weapon anywhere they want.

-- Decided it's lawful to shoot cats or dogs that are running loose.

-- Eliminated (this one may still be under consideration) the 1000ft "no gun zone" around schools.

-- Raised the sales tax on FOOD ITEMS from 1.75% to 4.35%

-- Lowered the sales tax on NON food items from 4.75% to 4.35$

-- Sued the federal gov't for possession of BLM lands within the state's borders. They say the lands have been mismanaged and should belong to the state (our legislators are aligned with mining companies).

Great session, eh? I'm sure there will be a lot more to report before they're done for the year.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments I don't understand, Bun.

message 330: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments I believe she's saying that some people have speculated the U.S. could be pulled apart from within as people segregate themselves into ever-more like-minded enclaves.

Those in one state, for example, could congratulate themselves for their moral and racial purity, while those in another could celebrate their ethnic and sexual diversity. No reason, really, for the states to pretend to belong to a single, cohesive nation.

message 334: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments It's not far from the minds of some. That guy from Texas was talking about secession last year, and legislators in my own state are ALWAYS looking for ways to maximize their own profits by suing the fed or passing bills designed to give the fed the finger.

Last year they had one that said firearms manufactured and sold exclusively within Utah would be EXEMPT from federal weapons guidelines. People would NOT need to pass a background check and there would be no registration.

Oh yeah, these crazies are ready to roll.

They are always complaining how the cities like Seattle carry the whole state usually because it has the density of population. They are pissed! We had a State election on Saturday. There was a land slide victory to the Coalition after a gazillion years rule by the Labor (yes it is spelt without the u, the wallies) Party.

Running up to the election the following incident caused a bit of a giggle.

But in New South Wales, Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell learned a lesson about sharing the media spotlight with young ones while visiting a childcare centre in Sydney's inner west.
Mr O'Farrell was reading the children's book The Very Hungry Caterpillar to preschoolers at Woodstock Childcare Centre in Burwood, when one little boy kept interjecting with the word "penis".
Another little boy told the man who is likely to be premier he had a pet dinosaur, prompting Mr O'Farrell to say, "I thought they were only in the Labor Party."
As he left the centre, another little boy called Mr O'Farrell a "silly bum bum".
Mr O'Farrell made the mistake of asking the child to clarify his statement.
"He said you're a silly bum bum," another boy shot back.

Aw, I ♥ you too, Barb. Now assume the position...

It’s true. Southern Ontario gets all the good stuff, I have friends that live way up nort (not a typo) and I give them credit... but so does the government at tax time- to the tune of $8.00 a day ‘Northern Tax Credit’- which I’m perty sure doesn’t cover the extra cost of living up there. Everything is more expensive up there-except real estate and land which doesn’t do you a whole lot of good if a) you can’t get a job b) you can’t afford to eat c) you can’t afford to drive to work. I’ve thought about living up there, but it’s too expensive.

message 349: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) We live far enough north in Alberta to qualify for the Northern Living Allowance. There is also another benefit, a travel allowance.

Employers enter a negotiated amount (usually $2000) into, I believe, box 32 on the T4. It's basically a "get out of Dodge" benefit. Helena, you may want to have your friend look into it as well. It seems to be a little known benefit. Out of all the employees I've done payroll for, only 2 have asked for the benefit.

message 350: by Helena (new)

Helena | 1056 comments I agree with you, Barb. I have lots of friends that live up there that share your concerns. Sorry you don’t live far enough for the northern tax credit (not that it covers the extra cost anyway).

Thanks, Janice- I’ll certainly tell my friend about that, I don’t think she knows. We had a conversation about it recently and she didn’t mention it.
