I entered John Irving into the literature map and came up with Toole as one of the suggestions. I can see the connection between the authors with the use of eccentric characters and comical descriptions.

C. I read Pure Drivel by Steve Martin for my short book (115 pages).
D. I read Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins for my dark book. While this book is pretty dark, I don't know that it should be on the most depressing books of all time. I think that some people in the series have redeeming qualities that make me less depressed about the whole concept.

25.3 - Sandy’s Task As Suggested by Katy: Daylight Savings Choose two books from the following options (books must be from two different categories):
A) Since we'll be "falling back" with our clocks, fall back in time and read a historical fiction novel or a nonfiction book about a historical time period before you were born.
B) Read a book that features time travel.
C) Since the days will be shorter, read a short book (100-300 pages). REQUIRED: If you choose option C, include in your post the number of pages in your book.
D) Since dark will come earlier, read a "dark" book - select a book that is over 100 pages from Most Depressing Book of All Time
I read The Fortune Teller's Kiss by Brenda Serotte, for C -- it was 218 pages. For A, I read The Blood of Flowers

A - The Darkest Pleasure - Gena Showalter (inhabited by the demon of Pain)
B - Lover Unbound - JR Ward (Big Book Ticket 500+ pages) - I opted to read this one because while it received over a 4.1 rating, it showed a change from the PNR to the UF genres - I did still enjoy it, but there wasn't as much focus on the two main characters, as much as some of the sub-characters.

The Samurai's Garden was beautiful and poignant- my RL book group has had very good discussions of Gail Tsukiyama's books.

10.9: Under the CoversThe Chocolate War by Robert Cornier
I chose this from the "10 Most Challenged Books of 2009" list. I think this book was flashlight worthy. It was interesting how choosing not to sell chocolates could incite so much drama but greater wars have been fought over less so I guess go figure.

BLUEMOON10.2 WE NEED A DRINK - Fuzzy Navel by J.A. Konrath. This was a mystery suspense book. Did not realize it was the fifth in a series but I was able to follow it well. It has a cliffhanger ending so may have to work the next book into the challenge somewhere. I gave it 3*.
15.6 ONE HIT WONDERS - My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira. This was a book about a young woman who wants to be a surgeon. It takes place during the civil war. I found the beginning of the book really engaging but it sort of fell flat for me about 1/2 way through. I did give it 3* though.
