Deanne | 681 comments Read Silence by Shusaku Endo, loved it and found it difficult to put down. Silence by Shusaku Endo

message 6102: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katats) | 150 comments I finished The Portrait of a Lady earlier this week. It took awhile to gain steam for me, but I really ended up enjoying it and caring for the characters. I know there are a lot of Henry James entries on the list, and after tackling this one I feel ready for more.

message 6103: by Rachel (Sfogs) (new)

Rachel (Sfogs) | 226 comments I've just finished The Devil and Miss Prym.
This book was scary to me in the sense that very ordinary people, can be brought to do very evil things.

message 6104: by Grada (BoekenTrol) (new)

Grada (BoekenTrol) (boekentrol) | 60 comments Today I finished The Hours by Michael Cunningham and read Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Well, this group's bookshelves has all of the books. But there is a thread here about finding the list(s).

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

You can look in that group of threads, too. Lots of helpful info.

Aileen | 154 comments I finished Callirhoe by Chariton from 2006 list, great book 5/5.

message 6114: by Sandi (new)

Sandi | 227 comments Finished after the quake by Murakami today.

message 6115: by Mina (new)

Mina | 8 comments Finished In Cold Blood last night! I love Truman Capote, he's so ... well, Truman Capote. I found it slightly disturbing that I wasn't as disturbed by the killings as I -should- be. But then I looked up pictures of the family. Being the same age as Nancy when she was killed, with all my life's goals and dreams planned out, I just think about how she never got to complete hers... it's just awful. It is certainly a different book that was well written.
I am going to be watching the movie Capote and then possibly read the book once more...

message 6116: by Shovelmonkey1 (new)

Shovelmonkey1 | 190 comments Recently finished The Hobbit and How Late it was, How Late by James Kelman which I bloody loved but it has met with mixed response and even though it won the Man Booker in 1994 one lady off the judging panel said it was "utter crap"!

I've just finished it. And like it too. Unusual but possible.

message 6119: by Bucket (last edited May 02, 2012 11:02AM) (new)

Bucket | 248 comments Finished Neuromancer by William Gibson. I didn't enjoy this book much, but I figure I wasn't meant to as I'm not a sci-fi reader. However, I was definitely disappointed as its presence on this list, long list of awards, and sheer volume of critically favorable attention made me expect this to be a genre-breaker like Ray Bradbury's works.

message 6120: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (jasmenigma) | 4 comments Lolita. Beautifully written but I spaced out a number of times.

message 6121: by Ananya (new)

Ananya Rubayat (ananya_rubayat) Just finished The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara KIngsolver. Liked it.

message 6122: by Alyson Of Bathe (new)

Alyson Of Bathe (alysonofbathe) | 20 comments I just finished Mrs. Dalloway, a reread for me. Some thoughts here.

message 6123: by Pinar (new)

Pinar Celebi (pinuccia) Just finished The Swarm: A total diasappointment for me :(

message 6124: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Père Goriot, which I liked, but not 5 stars worth. It's interesting that Balzac thought this was his finest work, when some of us seem to prefer his Eugénie Grandet. Anyway, my thoughts on Goriot here: my comments

It's one of my favorite.

message 6126: by Sandi (new)

message 6127: by Erik (new)

Erik The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I'm not sure how I made it this far without reading it. It was horribly depressing in the best possible way.

Like!

message 6129: by Danyellemastro (new)

Danyellemastro | 170 comments I just 'finished' London Fields, although technically this is a lie because I skimmed the last 100 pages as it was going nowhere and I started to fall asleep after about 2 pages every time I picked it up. Captured on my blog. My husband said he's going to make me finish it on my deathbed as I have cheated. It'll just finish me off quicker, I think!

message 6130: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments I just finished This Side of Paradise, & just started Catcher in the Rye.

message 6131: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Ethan Frome, and I think Edith Wharton is my new favorite author.

my comments

message 6133: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments Just finished Catcher in the Rye. Personally, I thought it sucked compared to others from Salinger. Absolutely DETESTED Holden...what a jerk.

message 6134: by Lynecia (new)

Lynecia (luvnecia) | 40 comments Last book I read that was on the list was "Doctor Zhivago" it was a very slow start and took me a month to read but it ended up being a pleasant surprise.

message 6135: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments Just finished The Age of Innocence and absolutely loved it.

message 6136: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 251 comments I finished The Last Temptation of Christ. Not bad, not amazing.

message 6137: by Corina (new)

Corina Romonti (paleview) | 21 comments I just finished The Virgin Suicides and I must say it instantly became one of my favourite books. I think it`s one of the most beautifully written novels I`ve ever read.

message 6138: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments The Voyage Out - Virginia Woolf

Wonderfully executed!

message 6139: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments Just completed Wise Blood and although I found it interesting I would have appreciated it much more if I had more familiarity with church doctrine.

message 6140: by Rachael (new)

Rachael | 9 comments Just finished Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. So much better than when I tried to read it for the first time in the 8th grade!

message 6141: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments Just finished Candide and liked it better than I had anticipated.

message 6142: by Karina (new)

Karina | 401 comments Just finished The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I was interested for the first 200 pages but after that the book went downhill from there. The characters were completely unlikeable.

message 6143: by Danyellemastro (new)

Danyellemastro | 170 comments Persuasion by Jane Austen. I was sceptical but it was great! I would recommend to anyone usually put off by period romances as it's a lot less pink and fluffy than anticipated.

message 6144: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Finished The Plague last evening.

my thoughts

message 6145: by Kyle (new)

Kyle The Secret History was to me great through the end - though the first half was a little more fun, the second half was basically Crime & Punishment in a preppy little college. Great stuff.

message 6146: by Bucket (new)

Bucket | 248 comments Just finished Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. I love the fable-like quality of the writing and the personalization of the characters. From what I'd heard about the book ahead of time, I was afraid it would over-simplify the Christian missionaries vs. native Africans issue by turning each side into a homogenous group of like-minded lemmings. But, Achebe succeeded in getting across his message about cultural desctruction in Africa without romanticizing it. I'm impressed and very glad I read this.

I agree with you about Persuasion. It was my first Austen, and my favorite. I think it often gets overlooked.

message 6148: by Anu (new)

Anu (anu_datta) Finally read "Sense and Sensibility". Much easier to read than the last time i tried... about 15 years ago!

It really has a slow start, but I loved it. It's one of my favourites from the list.

message 6150: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments Just completed A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. While I did enjoy the book I found it neither comic nor the masterpiece advertised. A good read but not one that I can rave about or probably remember a year from now.
