Read Silence by Shusaku Endo, loved it and found it difficult to put down.

I finished The Portrait of a Lady earlier this week. It took awhile to gain steam for me, but I really ended up enjoying it and caring for the characters. I know there are a lot of Henry James entries on the list, and after tackling this one I feel ready for more.
I've just finished The Devil and Miss Prym. This book was scary to me in the sense that very ordinary people, can be brought to do very evil things.

I plan to start reading it as my next book.
Kristi wrote: "I just finished Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Zafron The Shadow of the Wind"I don't think that's a list book.
Finished The Leopard and really liked it. beautifully written, and on a subject that currently interests me.

Where do you find the original list???????????
Kristi wrote: "Where do you find the original list??????????? "Well, this group's bookshelves has all of the books. But there is a thread here about finding the list(s).

You can look in that group of threads, too. Lots of helpful info.
Finished In Cold Blood last night! I love Truman Capote, he's so ... well, Truman Capote. I found it slightly disturbing that I wasn't as disturbed by the killings as I -should- be. But then I looked up pictures of the family. Being the same age as Nancy when she was killed, with all my life's goals and dreams planned out, I just think about how she never got to complete hers... it's just awful. It is certainly a different book that was well written.I am going to be watching the movie Capote and then possibly read the book once more...
Recently finished The Hobbit and How Late it was, How Late by James Kelman which I bloody loved but it has met with mixed response and even though it won the Man Booker in 1994 one lady off the judging panel said it was "utter crap"!

I liked this one. Diverting and unusual.

I've just finished it. And like it too. Unusual but possible.
Finished Neuromancer by William Gibson. I didn't enjoy this book much, but I figure I wasn't meant to as I'm not a sci-fi reader. However, I was definitely disappointed as its presence on this list, long list of awards, and sheer volume of critically favorable attention made me expect this to be a genre-breaker like Ray Bradbury's works.
Père Goriot, which I liked, but not 5 stars worth. It's interesting that Balzac thought this was his finest work, when some of us seem to prefer his Eugénie Grandet. Anyway, my thoughts on Goriot here: my comments
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I'm not sure how I made it this far without reading it. It was horribly depressing in the best possible way.

I just 'finished' London Fields, although technically this is a lie because I skimmed the last 100 pages as it was going nowhere and I started to fall asleep after about 2 pages every time I picked it up. Captured on my blog. My husband said he's going to make me finish it on my deathbed as I have cheated. It'll just finish me off quicker, I think!http://bookbebeautiful.blogspot.co.uk/
Just finished Catcher in the Rye. Personally, I thought it sucked compared to others from Salinger. Absolutely DETESTED Holden...what a jerk.
Last book I read that was on the list was "Doctor Zhivago" it was a very slow start and took me a month to read but it ended up being a pleasant surprise.
I just finished The Virgin Suicides and I must say it instantly became one of my favourite books. I think it`s one of the most beautifully written novels I`ve ever read.
Just completed Wise Blood and although I found it interesting I would have appreciated it much more if I had more familiarity with church doctrine.
Just finished Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. So much better than when I tried to read it for the first time in the 8th grade!
Just finished The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I was interested for the first 200 pages but after that the book went downhill from there. The characters were completely unlikeable.
Persuasion by Jane Austen. I was sceptical but it was great! I would recommend to anyone usually put off by period romances as it's a lot less pink and fluffy than anticipated.http://bookbebeautiful.blogspot.co.uk/
The Secret History was to me great through the end - though the first half was a little more fun, the second half was basically Crime & Punishment in a preppy little college. Great stuff.
Just finished Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. I love the fable-like quality of the writing and the personalization of the characters. From what I'd heard about the book ahead of time, I was afraid it would over-simplify the Christian missionaries vs. native Africans issue by turning each side into a homogenous group of like-minded lemmings. But, Achebe succeeded in getting across his message about cultural desctruction in Africa without romanticizing it. I'm impressed and very glad I read this.

I agree with you about Persuasion. It was my first Austen, and my favorite. I think it often gets overlooked.
Finally read "Sense and Sensibility". Much easier to read than the last time i tried... about 15 years ago!
Lynecia wrote: "Last book I read that was on the list was "Doctor Zhivago" it was a very slow start and took me a month to read but it ended up being a pleasant surprise."It really has a slow start, but I loved it. It's one of my favourites from the list.
Just completed A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. While I did enjoy the book I found it neither comic nor the masterpiece advertised. A good read but not one that I can rave about or probably remember a year from now.
