MARTINA'S LIST - SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE - 3/10

I just finished The Mane Attraction (Pride #3) by Shelly Laurenston (★★★★★). This is one of my favorite PNR series when I'm looking for good humor and silliness. Yes, it's a little raunchy and dysfunctional, but it's still a super fun read.

This book is about Mitch (lion shifter) and Sissy Mae (wolf shifter) - both whom you meet in earlier books. Mitch is an undercover detective about to testify against a big mafia-type baddie. He discovers that an assasin has been hired to take him out. Sissy Mae is a good friend and partner-in-crime who helps him "lay low" for awhile. But one thing leads to another and they begin to realize that their feelings for one another run deeper than friendship.

I LOVE the friendship angle! I can't think of another PNR where the couple started as friends and slowly fell in love. This was so much more interesting than chalking it up to fate or kismet. And I love the crazy dynamics of both the pack & pride families. The supporting characters are really the best part of the book . . . although the steamy sex scenes are quite nice, too. :-)

Thoughts on Warrior by Zoe Archer

Currently I'm floating somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4.5 (and maybe even 5) stars, and I'm going to let the print reread decide on that later. But for now I give Gabriel and Thalia a hug, 4 stars and a Hell Yeah.

I really looked forward to this series, and I was slightly worried that mabye I was expecting to much. But it turned out a wonderful read, though slightly less exciting then I expected.

Gabriel Huntley is a retiring English Soldier who accidentally gets involved in a fight, and promises to deliver a message for the man he tried to save. Which is convenient, since he didn't really want to settle down after all.

On to Mongolia it is, where he delivers the message to Thalia and her father. Gabriel understands the coded message is bad news, and when Thalia leaves for the desert the next day he decides to tag along to protect her. Let the adventure begin!

I adored Gabriel. He's a tough soldier to his bones, but he doesn't have one vicious strike in him. He can be violent and crude, but he's good. Because he's been a soldier all his life, he's also not a ladies man.

When he encounters Thalia for the first time he's slightly flustered, because he doesn't know how to act around proper ladies. Lucky for him, Thalia's not quite a lady, brought up as she is in the wild Mongolia by a widowed father. Thalia is an amazing heroïne, strongwilled, wanting to be her own person, very much aware of her strengths and flaws. She really has her act together, and though she knows it's not how a woman is supposed to live, she doesn't really care about that, because she's genuinly happy with who she is.

And Gabriel loves her for that.

I love how he sees her femininity through her Mongolian manly outfit, her rifle abilities, and the dusty discomforts of travel. I also loved how they fell in love. Even though they don't find each other mind-blowing attractive at start, both their interest is spiked because they find the other different and interesting. The more they get to know each other, the more attractive they find each other, and then there is lustin' and lovin' and it all so nicely intermingles. It's a love both earned and freely given.

And it's truly a relationship of equals. As Gabriel refers to them, an army of two. In this setting, that's something very lovely and valuable.

MARTINA'S LIST - SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE - 4/10

I just finished Changing the World and Other Tales of Valdemar by Mercedes Lackey, et. al. (★★★1/2). This book is a group of 16 short stories all taking place in the fantasy world of Velgarth, where the Valdemar fantasy series by Mercedes Lackey takes place. Only one is written by Lackey herself, and as with pretty much all anthologies, the stories are very much hit or miss. My favorites are the ones featuring the Heralds and their Companions, but there are a number of stories without them that are good, too. A couple about a hobgoblin and his friend and at least one about a guardsman. Overall a good read, but not 5-star worthy like most of the full-length Valdemar stories.
