Yes, I did like it, and it was poignant in several ways. At first I thought it was just going to be a coming-of-age story, and it was that, but there were a lot of other threads in the story, and I liked the way she pulled them all together in mostly realistic ways.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 411 comments I was suprised by it as well, I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I read it, but found myself really immersed in it.

But mostly Jan--its just the ones that we read for the challenge. Altho, there is a group dedicated to how many books you've read this year, if you are interested in that.

So far, I've read 235. I'm behind last year's totals, but then, this year has been a bit harder for me to find the time to read.

Jan (janoda) 2/10 Read

1. My Books Kamikaze by Moira Rogers ★★★ Review Below. 9/2
2. Groups Born of Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon
3. Goodreads Author Deadlands Hunt by G.L Drummond
4. Recommended Book Either Jane's Warlord by Angela Knight, or Her Dark Angel by Felicity E. Heaton.
5. Quiz The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (The Quiz)
6. Listopia Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins / it's still nr 1 on the Cannot wait Books of 2010 list :)
7. Friends Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
8. Book of the Month Palimpsest by Cat Valente // The BotM for Sept in the Beyond Reality Group
9. Good Reads Shelves Kept by Zoe Winters ★★★ 9/4 Thoughts below
10.Challenges Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins// Because I'm totally lame, I just picked the general 100 books in 2010, so I can actually read some books on there that I planned to read this year.

Thoughts on Kept by Zoe Winters

Greta is a cat-shifter who discovers her tribe wants to sacrifice her on the next full moon. Out of option, she runs to the only person powerful enough to protect her, Dayne, a dark scorcerer responsable for the decimation of her tribe 30 years ago.

Kept wasn't entirely what I expected, but I liked it well enough. For a novella the characters are developed well, especially Greta's cat phases are deliciously detailed and ring true.

The story itself is interesting enough, the attraction while not really romantic, feels like a realistic attraction and the evil tribe leader plot felt threatening enough.

I've been reading a lot of novella's lately, and I think it's hard to write a good romance novella, because you need to solve the conflict and make the characters fall in love with each other in a very limited page-frame.

In the first half of the book Zoe Winters does the worldbuilding and conflict building really well, but her character's stay a little disconnected. In the 2nd half of the book, the characters and their emotions feel more fleshed out, but then the conflict gets a bit rushed.

It wasn't a bad story, it had its interesting and touching moments, but it could have been more.

The Books:

READ
Kamikaze by Moira Rogers Kept (Blood Lust, #1) by Zoe Winters

ALSO READ
The rest of the Last Call series
Hurricane (Last Call, #2) by Moira Rogers Tequila Sunrise (Last Call, #3) by Moira Rogers Virgin Daiquiri (Last Call, #4) by Moira Rogers Tequila Sunset (After Hours, #1) by Moira Rogers

Two of the Wasteland Series (The Wanderer was really nice)

The Wanderer by Crystal Jordan The Breeder by Eden Bradley

TO READ
Born of Night (The League, #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Deadlands Hunt by G.L. Drummond Jane's Warlord by Angela Knight OR Her Dark Angel by Felicity E. Heaton Palimpsest by Catherynne M. Valente The Hunger Games (Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins Catching Fire (Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins Mockingjay (Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins

Martina the Book Fairy (book_fairy) | 442 comments Finished one, but I need some recommendations for #4. Can you gals shoot me some, please? The more the merrier! I'm still researching my candidates so I'll post as I go. :-)

MARTINA'S LIST - SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE - 1/10

Early yesterday morning I finished Heart Journey (Heartmates #9) by Goodreads author, Robin D. Owens (★★★★1/2). This series is one of my all-time favorites! It takes place on Celta, a world settled hundred of years ago by a generational ship from Earth. The settlers had various psychic powers that bred true and now a certain amount of psychic power (or Flair as it's called in this series) is inherent in almost the entire Celtan population. There's a rich cultural background to the series which makes these books a joy to read and the romance isn't to shabby either.

This particular book is about Raz Cherry, an actor we met in a previous book. Raz discovers he has a Heartmate, but he's not quite ready to settle down - he's just starting to break into big roles in the theater and enjoys his currently philandering ways too much to stick with one woman.

Del is a cartographer and lives a life full of wanderlust, roaming the Celtan wilderness, but she's come back to the city to claim her Heartmate and sweep him off to the wilderness with her.

I usually give these books 5 stars, but this was my least favorite so far. I loved how much this couple had to overcome to be together, but in the end it just wrapped up too easily. Still, the world of Celta is a rich and fabulously written place. I love the Fams and I thought the Flair of the characters, especially their creative Flair, was well developed. I very much look forward to book #10. I can't get enough of Celta!

Martina the Book Fairy (book_fairy) | 442 comments I'm still looking for recommendations for #4 - if anyone has some please shoot them my way. :-)

MARTINA'S LIST - SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE - 2/10

I just finished The Awakening and The Struggle (Vampire Diaries, #1 & 2) by L.J. Smith (★★★★). The series is YA vampire romance. It's actually surprising I hadn't read it yet since it was written back in 1991 when I actually was a YA. :-) I guess I wasn't reading vampire books back then. I have seen the show on TV, but there was a significant number of differences between the show and this book (which I won't spoil for anyone who hasn't yet read it).

I was actually pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the book and how quickly I read it. Yes, Elena is super annoying. She's the girl you just hated in high school and for good reason. I still don't understand why so many of the characters fawn all over her. Still, she does show some growth by the end of the book and the book exits on such a cliffhanger that I know I'll pick up the next one.

Jan (janoda) Oookay.
Is there a thread somewhere on what subsections of romance qualify, because I think I want to make some changes to my list here, since I just finished a very, very awesome book, but I'm not 100% sure it fits here. In my mind paranormal fantasy is dark and gritty, and this one isn't, and none of the main characters is paranormal, but there is a lot of paranormal stuff happening...
I think it might be just regular fantasy romance with some steampunk thrown in.
I'm all confused obviously, and in ample need of a guideline....

message 244: by Mel (new)

Mel (mel_b) | 1188 comments Jan, for this challenge you can read all kinds or urban fantasy and/or paranormal romance books. And you're even allowed 3 non-paranormal books. But if you say there's definitely some paranormal stuff going on, then I guess you can just fit the book in with the paranormal books.

Jan (janoda) Mel wrote: "Jan, for this challenge you can read all kinds or urban fantasy and/or paranormal romance books. And you're even allowed 3 non-paranormal books. But if you say there's definitely some paranormal st..."

Yeah well, I already have the Hunger Games books on my list as the non PNR 3 allowed, so I need the rest to be PNR :)

I'm mostly suffering from the "someone borrowed the books I planned to read the day before I went to the library" syndrome, and now I'm afraid I might not make it, since there aren't all that much PNR translated to dutch (or popular enough to be in the library in english), so I need to rethink a bit.

I've checked with the Fantasy Romance section on Wikipedia, and it really doesn't fit their either. And people seem to shelve it under paranormal, so I guess I'll shelve it like that too.

message 246: by Mel (new)

Mel (mel_b) | 1188 comments LOL, I've got the same problem concerning English books and Dutch libraries. What's the book called (you made me curious!).

Jan (janoda) Mel wrote: "LOL, I've got the same problem concerning English books and Dutch libraries. What's the book called (you made me curious!)."

Yeah, it doesn't feel like all that much gets translated into Dutch, and since I'm on a very tight student budget, I either have to revert to cheap ebooks, or library books. It can be annoying to be limited like that.

Warrior I had been looking forward to it for a while, and it lived up to it for 99%. Out in ebook since the 1st, out in paperback starting the 7th I think.
I'll write a review for it tonight, and then add my progress on the challenge here :)

message 248: by Mel (last edited Sep 06, 2010 06:54AM) (new)

Mel (mel_b) | 1188 comments I see the book has been shelved as fantasy and paranormal and it's even listed in a Historical Paranormal Romance-list: so I think you're safe to just list it as a paranormal :)

I feel you on the budget thing. I read a few of my oldest books in Dutch but after switching to English they just seemed weird to me. I actually reread Bitten in English. (Gebeten was goed, maar Clay's 'southern drawl' kwam toch beter tot zijn recht in het Engels;)).
I used to buy my books at the American Book Center, but the books usually are about 11 euro. Nowadays I order them from bookdepository.com (or the UK version). The books are much cheaper and they don't charge shipping costs!
