Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
Ulysses by James Joyce

I very much like fantasy/supernatural novels, but I am trying to expand myself into various other complex genres instead of vampires and witches lol.

I have 30-40 min tram ride to work each day, but I get really bad motion sickness if I try to read on anything that moves, so recently I've been listening to audio books and really enjoying them.
I am also trying to broaden my reading horizons and finding that's much easier to do with ebooks and audiobooks.
I joined up to motivate myself to read more - I set myself a goal of 12 books this year and I'm now on my 13th, so happy with that.
Looking forward to some good book discussions :)

It sure will. Welcome Carol, Olaf, Stacey and Patricia.

Grow? Ack...I already thought it was too long!

I was born in the UK but have spent most of my life in Australia. I came here as an astrophysicist and worked at Mt Stromlo Observatory before getting a job with the Australian Government in Parliament House. That didn't last and I entered public relations/journalism before going into the tourist industry via scuba diving. The final act in my messy working life was to set up a backpacker resort in North Queensland. My special interests are mystery thrillers and historical novels.

Scuba diving! Whee!!! That terrifies me but I'm dying to do it! See any mermaids ? ;) Where abouts in North Queensland and which resort? I'm a Mackay girl

Used to read obsessively but don't seem to have as much time anymore. Must. Fix. That.
Love reading for the learning and the escape :)

I love reading and have done ever since I can remember. I must say, I don't really have one favourite genre - I love fiction, classics, autobiographies, biographies, young adult(!?), thrillers...... pretty much I will read any book that grabs my attention. I have a book case that has a number of those attention grabbers still waiting to be read...
At the moment, I am very much enjoying Australian fiction by female authors. I have read "A House for All Seasons' by Jenn J. MacLeod, "A Stranger In My Street" by Deborah Burrows, and last night finished "It Takes a Village" by Christine Stinson. I can honestly say that I loved each and every one of them, even though they were all very different.
I look forward to checking in from time to time, and catching up with you all.
Karen wrote: "Hi everyone, thank you for your warm welcomes. I am a 42 yo mum to 4, and work as an EA in a kindy / pre primary centre. When life allows, I enjoy reading, cardmaking, stamping, scrapbooking and ..."
House for all Seasons and A Stranger in My Street are two I've also enjoyed Karen, and It Takes A Village is on my list to read:)

Enjoy browsing the Aussie Readers group!

I joined this group because I'm always looking for something new, inspiring or I'm not too ashamed to admit.... a bodice ripping guilty pleasure. I also am looking forward to discussing books....there aren't many people around here I can do that with & I just don't have the time to join a book group.
Atm I'm reading a Kresley Cole book. I'm finding o.k and a bit of fun.
Anyway, I look forward to chatting with you guys in the future.
Welcome Jane, lovely to have you with us. Have a browse through the threads, you'll find lots to interest you I'm sure:)

Hi Karen and welcome. I have read all three. All three are good books. Hi Jane and welcome too.

I think we all wish to be paid to read:) Good luck with your next challenge.

My name is Olaf and I live and teach Uni in Sydney. I came across this group putting the finishing touches on my blog I had established for a different online group (http://theclassicsclubblog.wordpress....) where I participate in the 50 classics in 5 years.
I blog at theozreader.blogspot.com.au. Given my busy academic life (where I also need to read, just not literature ;-), I am convinced that 50 books will be plenty for me but am open to some extra reading ideas.
I have no literary background other than a desire to read and joined this other club (I believe it is in the US somewhere) on the advice of a dear friend from my college days to encourage me to read more for pleasure.
My favourite book to date is “Things fall apart” by Chinua Achebe. My current battle is with a book I always felt in need to read but was scared of: Ulysses by James Joyce (so ,if anyone is reading it as well, maybe we can mutually encourage each other to stick with it).
So, cheers everyone, I keep dropping in from time to time to see what's new.
