Welcome, Rena! (Nice name - my mother's name was Reene and I have a niece Rowena who is usually called Rena.)

It must feel like finding a little bit of your old homeland, discovering this group. Hope you enjoy our company.

And yes, we and the Kiwis pretty much give each other a hard time. Like siblings at the bottom of the world!

Guy | 12 comments @All: Thanks for giving me such a warm welcome!

@Brenda: I have just read chapter 4 of the Tom Kruse story. It gives an interesting insight in the lives of mid-20th century outback people. Worth the read!

@Monya: Thanks a lot for mentioning those Aussie authors. In fact, the only one I knew was Ion Idriess. Years ago I have read one of his books but I can't remember which one it was. I looked up some of the other authors and marked a couple of their books as to read.

Hello again Guy - another pair of Aussie writers are Ruth Park (who was born in New Zealand) and D'Arcy Niland. Ruth passed away recently at an advanced age and D'Arcy many years ago. Both were superb novelists. Ruth's best known works are THE HARP IN THE SOUTH and POOR MAN'S ORANGE, set in Sydney's slums in the 1940s. D'Arcy is most famous for THE SHIRALEE, and DEAD MEN RUNNING. He also wrote CALL ME WHEN THE CROSS TURNS OVER. Both writers also penned excellent short stories.

Ion Idriess wrote a great many books set in Australia and the Torres Strait islands, but my absolute favourite is his non-fiction story of his service in World War I, THE DESERT COLUMN. He served in the Australian Light Horse and at Gallipoli. And I'm about to recommend the book to another member!

Mark Adair (markadairauthor) Hello all. My name is Mark Adair and I live in Northern California - Wine Country, US version. I write suspense/thrillers. My wife and I have often talked of visiting Australia (or even moving there). The other day we noticed Oprah was hosting her show from Sydney - very beautiful and such wonderful people. Anyway, just glad to be here.

Cheers,

Mark

Welcome to the group! Yes we noticed Oprah was here too!!;D Thousands of very starstruck Aussie fans were delighted to see her here and she was followed around like royalty. It would be great if you and your wife could come for a visit one of these days. Your book The Father's Child looks very enjoyable.:)

Hi Mandy. Thanks for the welcome. Yeah, I did notice a few starstruck Aussies out in the crowd. :) It occurred to me as I watched that I was a fan of all the Aussie artists (actors, singers, etc.) on the show. Talented lot.

We do plan on visiting.

Thanks for the plug on the book. :)

S. Burke (soooz) | 7 comments Hello, everyone. My biography "Empty Chairs" was released this week by Night Publishing. It is a difficult read, please understand that, It is my story of living beyond Child Abuse. The streets of Sydney in the 1960's were a scary place to be 11 years old, and alone. I refuse to be called a survivor. I lived my life to the max and continue to do so. Empty Chairs is available here, written under my pen name of Stacey Danson. Again, please be aware, it is a truthful and open look at what can and does happen behind closed doors.

message 1019: by S. (new)

S. Burke (soooz) | 7 comments Carmel, thank you I appreciate it, and I am so pleased you like the cover. Our lives are full of Empty Chairs, aren't they. Chairs that once seated a loved one and friend who shared in our lives, perhaps leaning forward in their eagerness to chat, or sitting back and laughing at a shared joke. There is nothing quite as lonely as walking into a room filled with Empty Chairs.

Thanks a lot Monya for these references. It's always great to broaden one's horizons! I haven't been an avid reader of novels, but maybe I should try one or two and see what I have been missing... Until now I have always read more non-fiction than fiction. Mostly travel accounts or true stories set in various places around the world (like the one I'm reading now). I also try to vary the settings a bit (just have a look at what I have been reading the last year or so), but I do enjoy reading about Australia a lot! Thanks again!

message 1030: by [deleted user] (new)

G'day to all the new peeps, & soooz, here is one of my poems for you eh! stay well always.

Only those abused

Only those abused, giving pure love and trust
Deceived by would be friends seeking only lust

Only those abused, know of uncontrolled fear
When an adult interferes year after year

Only those abused, who live their nightmare life
Once a happy child, now lives in troubled strife

Only those abused, know the heartache and the pain
How they’ll continue life, living with this shame

Only those abused, carry deep within their memory
Images that torture and thoughts becoming deadly

Only those abused, know the trauma of inadequacy
Think of a razor finding that pumping artery

Only those abused, know the right time to tell
Their story of torment. Their story of hell.

Dale Renton (dalerenton) Hi all,

I've been a Goodreads member for a couple of months and a resident of Australia for over thirty years (born in Scotland). This is the first group I've joined (my publisher ran a give away here) so still on "L" plates. I've read through a few of the threads and this seems like a pretty relaxed place to start!

Dale

message 1033: by [deleted user] (new)

Dale, welcome to the group. Your scottish accent is hardly noticable. We'll have you on your "P"s before you know it.

message 1034: by Dale (new)

Dale Renton (dalerenton) Thanks! There's a bit of a shortfall in Australian fiction on my shelf right now and I'm looking forward to redressing the balance over the next few months.

message 1035: by [deleted user] (new)

Aaaah Dale, that Dale Renton, I've really got to pay more attention. I was one of the winners of your book. When it arrives I'll add it to my "Aussie Reading" challenge. I might make true Blue status after all.

This is the challenge if you would like to check it out.

message 1036: by Dale (new)

Dale Renton (dalerenton) Congratulations, Gail - hope you still feel like a winner after reading it!

I looked at the challenge and the lists of books folk are planning to read. I've actually read a few, although I don't have them on my Goodreads shelf. I'll come up with a list of to-reads and join up.

message 1037: by Kristy (new)

Kristy Mcwilliams | 3 comments Hi all, I am an aussie mum from Shellharbour NSW and I enjoy reading.

I have read many books by Australian authors and my favourite so far are:

"A Cargo of Women" by Babette Smith and
"Jessica" by Bryce Courtney.

I highly recommend both but particularly A cargo of women to any one interested in the stories of Australias early years. This book is about the stories of a womens convict ship. The author Babette was researching her family tree when she discovered an ancestor came to Australia as a convict on the Princess Royal. She researched the lives of all the women on the ship and wrote a non fiction book about her research she was then encouraged to fill in the gaps and turn it into a novel. I selected this book as my choice for my book club who all enjoyed it, I think you will too.

I am looking forward to reading your reviews and more Australian books.

Davina | 154 comments Hi thought I'd introduce myself I've been sneaking around for a month or two and thanks to all of you I found out about the book depository. I'm currently living in Melbourne and looking after two little girls, a husband, a cat and a dog. So I love to escape into a book every now and then. My favourite genre would have to be urban fantasy. I already had a list of books I wanted to read this year, when I was invited to the Aussie authors challenge so now that list has doubled and I have found a new appreciation for my library. (I usually bribe my daughter if she is good we'll go). So now it's mum that wants to go all the time. Anyway I've gone off on a tangeant. Thanks for the invite really enjoying it.

I.E. Henn Hi all, I'm from Sydney (married to a Queenslander who originally hailed from Gympie)and I'm an avid reader of mystery, suspense, s/f, some humour, some bios. I'm a long time fan of Jon Cleary (who sadly passed away recently). Other Aussie authors I've been reading lately are Judy Nunn, Michael Robotham, Kathryn Fox, Gerald Stone and Colin Falconer (yes, he's a Brit but he's lived in WA a long time).

I'm also a writer of suspense fiction. My short stories have appeared in several mags, including the Aust Women's Weekly and Woman's Day. I write a blog about books, pop culture etc. at http://ian-edward.blogspot.com (it feeds to my Good Reads page) and a thriller novel, The Delta Chain.

message 1045: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda Great to meet you Davina and Ian! Welcome to the group. Jump into the discussions whenever you like.

@ Davina - Melbourne's a beautiful city. Did you know it's rated by UNESCO as a City Of Literature? There is even an iPhone app that walks you around all the literary places in town. Check it out on this link: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...

@ Ian - Lovely to meet another author! Your book The Delta Chain looks like great reading. I'll be checking out your blog too! We have a thread where people can talk up their blogs. Find it here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...

Welcome Davina and Ian.

Ian - lived at Skyring Creek south of Gympie for 4 years in the 90s and shopped in Gympie too - cheaper than Noosa. Have never worked out why they just don't abandon the shops etc. at the bottom of the hill in the CBD. Flooded regularly and have been again. Couldn't believe it when Suncorp moved from the top of the hill down into the gully. Now live on the Darling Downs near most of our children and grandkids.

Enjoy the group. Everyone's nice! And happy writing. (I'm one of those too!)
