Kristen | 223 comments Rachel - I don't have a Kindle yet, but the lack of library loan is one of the reasons I haven't bought one. I do hope it has that capability soon.

JC (ainathiel) I bought a nook for me and kindle for the kid. I am still green at anyone who has a nook color or Ipad. They have a back light, color and Pandora.
Overall I am loving my nook and my kid loves her kindle.

Irene Hollimon | 52 comments I have a Sony. It's a great ereader. I graduated to a Nookcolor. I love it. A big reason was I wanted the backlight. But it's a give and take situation. For readability, nothing beats eInk. When you crossover into the color, LCD screen you do lose some readability. Also, all the bells and whistles on my new Nookcolor suck battery power. So, I have to be a little more careful than I would with a "plain jane" model. I was stuck in a hospital waiting room for hours the other day and I hadn't charged up first- Next time I'm telling my husband he must schedule his emergency room visit for a time when I have my ereader fully charged. After three hours in the emergency room, I started getting low battery messages.
Before you buy an ereader, consider how you're going to use it. If you're going to be outside a lot or traveling a lot.
I do most of my reading at home- in my bed even. The backlight is a great feature for me. Also the wi-fi connection my ereader has is super cool. I take my ereader and my cup of coffee outside in the morning and check my email and read the news. It's heaven on earth.

Sashana Rachel wrote: "@Lisarenee- I am sure there will be more as time goes by. Hmmm. That's an interesting thought about obtaining permission. They probably do have to do something like that. Now that the Lend feature ..."

Rachel, I read somewhere that the publisher has to give eBook companies permission for lending. Personally I think it's a tricky subject because if you have the actual (paperback or hardcover) book then there is nothing stopping you from lending them out to your friends. So you would want to have this same feature with your eBooks, right? But then you have to remember that eBooks and eReaders are turning the publishing world upside down with the lower prices and it is, after all, a money making business. So the lend me feature could be potentially hurtful. It's a really interesting topic (or I'm a bit nerdy, whichever you prefer).

message 155: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments @Shashana- I agree with all you said. Then maybe if a book has the lending feature they should sell it for a little more, if it is the profit they are worried about. Or maybe you could choose to have the lendable version or not, thus paying price 1, nonlendable or price 2, lendable. Hmmmm, I think I am on to something...

@Irene- The eInk was a lot of the reason I went for the Kindle. I can't stand looking at a computer screen for more than an hour or two. My eyes start hurting so bad sometimes I have to lay down and close them for awhile. I tend to read for hours and hours at a time, so the Kindle was best for me. The price and battery life also couldn't be beaten. Granted I don't have a touch screen or color, but for what I wanted an ereader for, just hours and hours of reading, the Kindle was best for me. It truly just depends on what the person is going to use the ereader for.

Mckris10- I know. I really wish it had to library loan feature too. However, if you read my response to Irene you will see why I went with the Kindle. *fingers crossed* Here's to hoping Kindle gets the library loan feature and then to you buying a Kindle. :)

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 34 comments I have a Kindle (first generation) and I love it so much! I bought a bunch of books with my birthday and Christmas gift cards, I am used to the Amazon website, I can sample the beginning of books, and there are lots of freebies. I want to upgrade eventually but right now mine works fine still so I am waiting on if a Kindle 4 comes out. I am guessing it will be a year or longer after 3 was released. I am also considering ordering a backup battery for my first generation. Even if I upgrade it will be nice to have the 1st generation as a backup or to give to a family member to use... I will have to see what happens. :)

message 157: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 52 comments Normally, I get at least a good 12 hours out of my Nookcolor and I read at home a lot so I can plug in whereever and the battery isn't an issue for me. But like I said my husband inconveniently decided he needed to go to the emergency room when my ereader wasn't fully charged. My Sony ereader however, has much better battery life than my Nookcolor. It can go days without a charge. If I were traveling a lot and going to the beach (I wish!), I might prefer the eInk and the battery life of my Sony. When I bought my Nook, I made sure the files were interchangeable with my Sony. So I can change out if my husband decides to surprise me with a trip to the Maldives : )

Arthur (astra) I think I have forgotten to tell you that I have upgraded from Sony PRS-505 to Sony PRS-650!

!!!WOW!!!

I love it.
The dictionary feature is mind blowing (English is my second language). Double tap on a word and hey presto! No finger tips smudges or at least a tiny fraction of what I have expected. I think eInk doesn't attract it as LCD screen. Search feature with virtual keyboard is fantastic. Although it has a fast forward pages feature I never use it. Search does it. More than two weeks of battery life.
I am afraid I am in love once again :D

You can only lend a book once and only for 14 days. I think publishers are looking at it the wrong way. When an author gives out a free ebook of the first of their series, which I see a lot when they are releasing another book, if the book is good it makes you more likely to buy their other books. I'm one of those cheap people and I never buy a new copy of an author I've never read before.

Awesome, I just got the PRS 600 and it is amazing. It has the same double tap dictionary, but I'm guessing yours is more updated. The cool thing about Sony is you can trade in your current model for a new one for $75 but I'll keep my PRS 600 for a few months.

Arthur (astra) Sashana wrote: "The cool thing about Sony is you can trade in your current model for a new one for $75 but I'll keep my PRS 600 for a few months...."

Don't! :)
(I mean don't wait)

650 is a lot better.
One thing. Screen! Its touch screen is only a name. In fact it is the same screen as 505, but it has no touch screen layer above, as a result:
1) No glare!
2) the text is lot sharper.

It also has a bit better contrast. The background is like 505, but the text it blacker.
I don't compare 650 with 600, only with 505. 600's screen doesn't come even close to 505 or 650 :)

Back to touch screen. 600 has a true touch screen. 650 something...I would say from Sci-Fi a few months ago. It has a standard eInk screen. Along the frame it has infra red sensors. Basically, if you are extremely careful, you don't have to touch the screen for it to respond. I tried. It is not practical, just out of curiosity.

message 166: by Shay (new)

Shay | 923 comments Lisarenee wrote: "Does anyone know if the lend feature works with an iPad?"

I think as long as you have the respective apps from Kindle and Nook for the iPad, it should work.

message 167: by Shay (new)

Shay | 923 comments Oops, I also meant to say that you could have someone loan you one of the B & N free classics to make sure that it works. That way if it doesn't you know or can figure out why without wasting a book loan. I think all of the free classics B & N gave away had the lend me feature. I mean, you don't have to read that copy of, say, "A Christmas Carol", it's in the public domain. So, it's a good way to test it out on the iPad before someone loans you a book you really need to get free.

message 168: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Will need to try that thanks.

Marcia Stauber (parismarcia) | 17 comments I Have had a sony reader since it first came on the market about 5 years ago I have trade up to newer models and for xmas just traded up to the newest model and it is the best. I think it far surpasses the Kindle and the Nook. The battery lasts a very long time. I travel to Paris every two weeks 9 hours on the plane and at least 2 or more hours air port and still do not need to charge battery when I arrive in France. Can borrow books free at local library; use Wifi in US and and internet elsewhere; lots of free ebooks available; touchscreen;dictionary great plus extras You can even buy cover with built in light. Great Buy

Arthur (astra) Sashana wrote: "Marcia, did you have the Sony PRS 600? If so what's the difference between it and the PRS 650? ..."

The most important improvement is the screen.
The screen's quality is as good or maybe 5-10% better than PRS-505. 600 has a true touch screen above the eInk screen, making text fuzzy and contributing to intolerable glare.
650 doesn't have physical touch screen. It has infra red sensors along the frame that sense your fingers/stylist when you approach the screen. So, if being pedantic, you don't have to actually touch the scree, just get very close to it. I have managed to do it a few times :)
Thus you have the very best of 505's screen + touch screen.
Another positive addition is that 650 has a fully justified epub support. 505, 700 and 600 have only left hand side justified leaving ragged edges on the right hand side in epub.
Yet another good thing is that now you can fully shutdown the reader if you don't plan on using it for a long period of time (for example from 23.00 till 09.00)(this part you could do in all previous models (except 500) too but...) when you start it up it doesn't require extra power like all previous models. Thus you can run on one charge instead of only 2 weeks, maybe for a month? In previous models completely shutting down the reader would in fact deplete battery (unless you were not going to use for weeks) because starting up precess was a power hog. I never shut down my 505. However, I always shutdown 650 when I know I am not going to read for the next 7+ hours.

There are might be other new features that I am not aware of because I didn't buy 600, only played with it a couple of time in the local Waterstones.

message 180: by cindy (new)

cindy (cinlin) I bought a Kindle a few weeks ago (it took forever to convince my mom, who thinks I read too much. is that even possible...?), and I adore it. I chose this over the Nook mainly because of the price and the opinions of the various bloggers I follow.

message 181: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Lang | 3 comments I got one before Christmas and I love it. I find that I'm reading much more now.

Ebooks are less of a strain on my shrinking pocketbook. I like the feel of paper books, but for ease of use, price and storage (esp for travel), I like Ebooks.

message 182: by Sashana (new)

Sashana @ Cinnamon: I chose my reader because it supports multiple ebook formats and it allows me to check out digital books from my library. I also did a lot of research and the Sony is what I think fitted my need best.

@Elizabeth: I agree with you, you can't beat the price of those ebooks.

message 183: by cindy (new)

cindy (cinlin) @Sashana: So you have the Sony eReader (do they have an official name)? How is it? I've never tried loaning eBooks from the library before...

message 184: by Sashana (new)

Sashana It's called the Sony PRS 600 Touch Edition. There is a newer version which is called the PRS 650. I love it, the only complaint I have is that I do have a bit of problem with the glare but for the most part I can ignore it. Everything else is great.

message 185: by Kristen (last edited Feb 01, 2011 08:57PM) (new)

Kristen | 223 comments I did quite a bit of research too before Christmas, and STRONGLY hinted that I had decided on the Kindle. Mostly because of the price, and I think Amazon has pretty good prices and selection of books on their site. I looked at the Nook, but there was something about it that I didn't like. I did look at the Sony ereaders too, and the one advantage that they did have was that you could borrow books from the library. One more day!! As long as the UPS people can operate their trucks in this horrible snow/ice storm that we have going. School got canceled for today and tomorrow, so that is a really nice birthday present too! :o) Anyway, I just wanted to share my news with fellow readers that would understand my excitement!!

message 186: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 223 comments @Rachel - thanks for the tip about the website. I looked around and saw some really cute designs. Do you have one, if so which one did you choose? I think I will wait until tomorrow to see if I actually get the Kindle before I start picking out accessories for it. If I decide on a cute skin for it, and then don't get one I think I would be heartbroken. So I shall wait. :o)

Thanks everyone for listening to me ramble on in my excitement the last couple of days!!

message 187: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Mckris10, did you tell your hubby what you wanted fo your birthday or did you just let him select a gift of his choice? I know that the months leading up to Christmas I dropped some really obvious hints. I guess my nagging paid off :)

message 188: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments I have one and so far I am pleased. I got the one called the Aspens. Pretty oranges, greens, and blues. I also paid the extra and got the matte finish. I didn't want all that glare. It looks sleek!

@Mckris10 I hope you get your Kindle!! and happy belated b-day!!

message 190: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 223 comments Thanks for the birthday wishes! Funny story - We are in the middle of a huge snow/ice storm here in Kansas, and my birthday present is stuck in Kansas City because UPS can't get through on roads or by plane. The one time my husband actually orders a gift for me instead of buying something at a store! Grrr...I am hoping that UPS will be able to get there by tomorrow because I am getting impatient. ;o)

message 191: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 223 comments @Sashana - I hinted very strongly a couple of months before Christmas that I wanted a Kindle, but our tv broke in November. So my husbands and my present to each other was a new tv, which meant that my Kindle had to be put on hold. And I haven't really mentioned wanting one since Christmas, but I think he knows how much I really want a Kindle. I am glad your "nagging" at Christmas time paid off for you and you got your Sony, it sounds like you really like it! Ereaders are great presents.

@Rachel - I will have to go look and see which skin you chose, they had some very pretty ones. I was looking for one with music notes or something like that on it since that has to do with my job, but I couldn't really find any. Oh well, I will keep looking and I am sure I will find something that I like.

@Lacey - I love the selection of free books that Amazon has, and that was one of the reasons that I decided to go with the Kindle. I was looking online and found (just by looking at the top 100) about 20 books that I wanted to read. I think in the long run an ereader will end up saving us money. I'm glad you like your Kindle!

message 192: by cindy (last edited Feb 02, 2011 06:33PM) (new)

cindy (cinlin) @Mckris10: I was debating between a Kindle skin or cover but went with the cover since I'm a notorious device-dropper (RIP past iPods/phones). I found the most adorable cover IMO while reading a blogger post. Ended up buying the cherry blossoms one. (http://app.medgestore.com/products/ki...)

message 194: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments I have a cover and a skin for mine. I don't always put my Kindle back in the cover if I am going to come back to it in a few hours. I like having both because the covers seem to bulky to read from, but I wanted to protect my Kindle a little even while reading.
