~~*Julie Kawalec-pearson (jewel77) | 43 comments I am trying to sell my sony e-reader on craigslist since I upgraded. I thought it wouldbe a quick sell but I guess not, maybe I should try ebay.. anybody got an ioea on what would be a good price for a used one?
I have an IPAd and love it-- i do wish it was a little bit smaller and less heavy.

message 102: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 52 comments I've been watching ereaders on ebay. $100 with all the accessories is probably a good price.

message 103: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 52 comments I will definitely be writing reviews of my Cruz tablet when it finally comes in. I'm sure it will be in before the Christmas rush.
Since I already have a Sony ereader, I'll be able to compare it up against that.

message 104: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 1 comments I used to be adamant about owning an e-reader. My argument for not wanting one was that i was old fashioned and enjoyed the feeling of turning the pages. My husband bought me my kindle earlier this year as a present. (because I refused to buy it myself) I have to say it was one of the best presents ever.

I will admit though that I didn't use it much until the past couple of months. I am enjoying it. It's definitely nicer when reading books that are 500+ pages laying in bed. It's also coming in handy when i read in the car because i just prop it on my steering wheel, no need to worry about pages flipping or the book falling.

Don't get me wrong I may love my ereader but I still frequent the library quite often and check out books.

I enjoy the kindle. I don't know much about the nook or the sony ereaders but I am glad that my husband the kindle. Amazon is suppose to be implementing a borrow feature sometime in the near future. It's also easy to find free books on other sites to put on my kindle. I found a great program that converts most of the file types into the correct format for the kindle.

Because of my kindle I have added a ton of to be read books. My kindle can never replace the feel and luxury of a real book but sometimes it's just more of a convenience to have it.

Sashana Question: Does Sony have a new Pocket Edition? (I know they have a new Touch...but I'm not sure about this one)

message 107: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Oh, and for those of you interested Borders has a comparison chart of a few popular eReaders. http://www.borders.com/online/store/M...

Are you reading while driving, Jenn?? Eeek, that would be scary! lol Be careful!! :o)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Having second thoughts about asking for a Kindle for Christmas. The Sony Reader Touch looks good too. So, my question is the Kindle or the Sony Reader Touch? Which one do you have? The Kindle does not have expandable storage like the Sony. Just wondering is it really that big of a deal? I mean I can transfer books back and forth from my pc to the Kindle right?

Barnes and noble nook. You can store over 1500 books on it, plus you can put in an SD card to hold more books! And the best thing is: not only do you get a free book every Friday, but have the LendMe feature where you can lend and borrow books with friends.

message 111: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 52 comments I bought the Sony over the Kindle. I love my Sony. However, I bought the Sony before the Nook came out. The Nook is less expensive than the Sony.

I'm going to upgrade from my Sony to one that is color and has wireless soon.

message 112: by Shay (new)

Shay | 923 comments Has anyone tried the Pandigital ereaders? http://www.pandigital.net/pandigitaln... I've seen them over $100 cheaper than the Color Nook (run a search online). In other words, a color ereader for under $149. The advantage to this brand in particular is that you can download B & N ebooks wirelessly.

message 113: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 52 comments well the price is good but I didn't like the reviews of the pandigital.

I'm getting a Velocity Cruz tablet. I've handled the ereader version and it looks nice too. Here is the website for what I've chosen. http://www.cruzreader.com/

It's the Borders gadget.

I have this semi-irrational hatred of Border's. There's a Border's right across the street from B & N about 2 miles from my house. Once, when I went in, it was really messy and the kid's area smelled like poo. We haven't gone back in 10 years. I know it was probably a fluke- bad day, bad management, etc., but lots of people I know haven't stepped foot in that store in years either because of various incidents like that. I know it can happen anywhere, but...the kids and I have OCD, so now the store is contaminated to us forever.

message 115: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 52 comments Well if you don't like Borders, the Nook would be a better choice.
I don't like Chucky Cheese for pretty much the same reason.

Shay | 923 comments Irene wrote: "Well if you don't like Borders, the Nook would be a better choice.

I hate Chucky Cheese, I always think I'm going to get TB or something from there. We went, once, and they kicked everyone out of the tunnels because someone pooped in them. That was pretty much the last time I went. I also can't go to PetSmart because once someone was in line with their dog, right behind me, and the dog peed. It's not necessarily the one incident as knowing that it's pretty likely to happen again. I was really sad about the Borders thing, though. The B & N used to have this train table, so every trip turned into at least an hour long trip. Border's was the store I went to when I just wanted to pick up a particular book and leave quickly. But, my oldest son won't allow any Border's books in the house- contamination. If a book gets dirty (in certain ways) in our own house, and I accidentally shelve it, I have to get rid of at least that book and the two other books it touches. So, I donate a lot of pristine, like new books.

message 117: by Sans (new)

Sans I got my Kindle on Wednesday. Love it, though I'm seriously considering getting a Velocity tablet after the New Year (and my bonus...).

message 118: by Sashana (new)

Sashana They had the Nook color for $99 at my local Best Buy, unfortunately they were sold out when I got there :(

message 119: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Okay, so I'm duking it out with my dad right now. Obviously he wants to get me a reasonably priced eReader and diva that I am, I want a brand (Sony or Nook). He's pushing me towards the The Sharper Image - Literati Digital Reader, has anyone heard of it?

Dads are by nature cheap. Not usually with their daughters, though. Ask him if he'll give you the difference in price towards the purchase of ebooks. (Oh, and the Sharper Image model looks seriously deficient in memory- 512 Mb. Make sure you can upgrade it and ask him to throw in some memory too.)

message 121: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I told him, "I know beggars can't be choosers, but it's either the Sony or the Nook old man. Go big or go home." (Or something like that) Really though, I think he's going to get me the Sony, I have awesome powers of persuasion.

message 122: by Shay (new)

Shay | 923 comments Tell him it's considered rude and socially unacceptable to give an "empty" ereader. You still need an ebook gift certificate. (You know, like it's bad luck to give an empty wallet?) It's understood, right, that he's getting you a cover? Get the extended warranty, too. Mine already has a little crack- the B & N extended warranty covers accidents.

message 123: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Haha I just told him, Shay. He said he promises not to get me that one but he'll surprise me. Thanks :D

Lauren | 931 comments Hey all!
I was in the Apple store today and checking out the iPads. My questions is: Do you think it would be worth it to get an iPad (as an ereader)even if you have something like an iPhone? Would it be more wise to get a Nook Color? Also, do you think an iPad is overpriced?

What do you intend to use it for? Do you want something to surf the net, check email, etc.? How heavy is the iPad? Can you read it while lying down? (I do that a lot.) Do you have kids? Is it likely to get damaged? Are you on a strict book budget (like me)? Well, it's self imposed, but still. If I bought the Nook color instead of the iPad, I would feel like I had a license to spend more money on ebooks. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that the best ereader is the one that works for you.

I'm kind of going back and forth too and am leaning towards the Nook color. Mostly because a tablet IPad would be too much of a temptation for the kids. They pretty much leave my Nook alone, but I don't think they'd keep their hands off basically a laptop. Sure enough, one day I'd come home and the screen will be cracked, water would be spilled on it, it would be covered in peanut butter. Not to mention it seems to heavy to hold in one hand to read while I'm lying down. Is it wrong of me to want both? Just use the iPad as a laptop? If only money were not an issue.

Kristen | 223 comments I am desperately wanting an ereader for Christmas, but I doubt if that will happen since our tv went out last week. If it were up to me I would get an ereader, but my husband can't go without his shows. Plus, we're on a two year contract for satellite so if we don't have anything to watch it on then that money is wasted...sigh... I will hope for an ereader for my birthday!

The good thing is that eReaders tend to go on sale a lot because they're always coming up with something new. Hopefully you'll be able to get one for an affordable price.

Yes, especially the older models. If you think about it, the bigger companies should practically give them away like the cell phone companies give away cell phones. Or, at least give some stripped down model for really cheap or free- like the cell phone companies. I would think that B & N and Amazon should understand that that they'll make a lot more money from selling the ebooks than the ereaders. At least in the long term. You should check out booksontheknob.com because they list when the sales are on- I think the Kindle was $89 on Black Friday, but it sold out really fast, like 10 seconds.

message 133: by Sashana (new)

Sashana The Nook color was on sale for $99 and it sold out so fast. I swear I almost cried.

message 134: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Is the Nook the only eReader that has a sharing(lending) feature?

message 135: by Sans (new)

Sans I heard that Kindle is going to start rolling out a file sharing feature. Each book can be lent once (not sure if that's to each person or once to only one person) for 14 days. I don't have a time line for when that will happen though.

message 136: by Sashana (last edited Dec 01, 2010 02:16PM) (new)

Sashana Thanks, Sans.

message 137: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 223 comments Thanks for the headsup on sales, I will have to start paying more attention. I am kind of leaning towards the Kindle right now, but honestly if my husband got me any ereader I would be ecstatic. The lending feature would be nice to have on the Kindle, and also "checking" out books from a library, which I know some other readers do.

The Kindle doesn't have a lend me yet. They've been promising for a while. You also can't borrow books from the library with the Kindle.

Yeah, I just discovered a couple of weeks ago that the Kindle isn't compatible with our library system, which was highly disappointing. Maybe someday soon...

Sashana Does Sony have a free book Friday?

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) I don't know if you've heard about this, or how likely this will be but e-books may be taxed up to 21% of total price starting 2011:

Sashana Grrrr...that makes me angry. I think eBooks are reasonably priced.

message 143: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I was looking up the features for the Nook and found the following:

Bring your NOOK or NOOKcolor into any Barnes & Noble store to get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.

Read any book free on your NOOK or NOOKcolor for up to an hour per day when connected to the free in-store Wi-Fi®.

Do you think this will be the new hang out of people who own Nooks and love books?

message 144: by Tai (new)

Tai (msglam) | 101 comments As a Nook owner I don't venture out to B&N more than I did before I had a Nook but I do make a point to go and see what the exclusive articles are and use my hour to check out books I am iffy on purchasing the book using the 1 hour time to read beyond the sample. However on the B&N Nook group I have read how some people are using the time to read books they rather not purchase (The feature allows you to save your page)that aren't e-books at the library. I must admit that when I go in to B&N now it is harder to find a spot to sit down and read cause their are more people sitting and reading their Nook in the stores.

Galla | 110 comments Rachel wrote: "Kindle launched their lend me feature today!"

Very interesting--I was poking around in the Kindle management section, and it seems that most of the publishers of the Kindle books I own aren't allowing the lend-me feature for their titles. Still, there are a fair few lend-ready books there.

I wonder how this will work out in practical terms. Maybe adding a GR shelf that can sort the books I have that are avail for Kindle lending would help.

message 148: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I wonder if since the feature is new they need to get permission from the authors? Maybe in the next month or so we'll see more lendable books.

message 149: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments @Mariyam- I read my books faster on there too. I think it has to do a lot with being able to make the text bigger for me. Sometimes the text in hard copy books is too small for me. Even though I have glasses my eyes still get tired.

@Galla- I am also wondering how well it will go. I am sure more books will become available as time goes on.

message 150: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments @Lisarenee- I am sure there will be more as time goes by. Hmmm. That's an interesting thought about obtaining permission. They probably do have to do something like that. Now that the Lend feature is here, now all it needs is the library loan ability!
