20.5 Liz Vegas’s Task (Bigger is Better) - Oprah's On!

The Oprah Winfrey show first aired on September 8, 1986 during the 1986-87 season. The 25th and final season of The Oprah Winfrey Show will be the 2010-2011 season, beginning September 13, 2010.

To celebrate this long running show, read ONE BOOK that was published in 1986 or 1987. Requirement: state publication year when posting.

Melissa Wiebe (melissawiebe80) Can I use In the Skin of a Lion? It was originally published in 1987 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_S... including the wikipedia link due to the fact that the goodreads link doesn't have anything indicating of its original publication date). There is a better idea here: Michael Ondaatje.

Dee (austhokie) | 9027 comments one of my groups a month or so ago, did a challenge where you had to read a book popular in the year you were born and they provided us two links, each for 1986 and 1987 are below:

Patricia | 680 comments We can probably use the 150 Top Bestsellers link from task 30.8 as well. Just look for books in those two years.

watch out for those - a lot of the books on the lists are not necessarily books that were published in that year, just hot sellers that year.

message 10: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizvegas) Just make sure and double check the publication dates if you find it on a bestseller or goodreads list.

@Melissa W- Yes, In the Skin of a Lionworks just fine.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3051 comments I actually found i book I owned and haven't read yet.

message 12: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizvegas) i hope it's an oldie but goodie, Jayme! :)

Caity (adivineeternity) Ooh, like the task! Should be interesting to find something, but I should have something on my shelves somewhere...

I doubled and triple checked to make sure that it was correct.

I hope you love this book, Melissa. I think it is an excellent novel!

Manday | 307 comments Be careful with the bestsellers list, they included a lot of classics and books from previous years

message 17: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) WOO! I have ONE book that isn't in the middle of a series that was published in 1987. If anybody wants to read the first book in what is supposed to be a good fantasy trilogy, I'll be using Daughter of the Empire.

message 18: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 240 comments If the original book was published in 1986 or 1987, is it acceptable to read a reprint of the book published at a later date?

Yes, that is fine.

I never got into that series. I have all his other books more or less.

message 21: by Terri FL (new)

Terri FL (territhemuse) | 615 comments Does the original date of first publication need to be 1986 or 1987? What about a book that was originally published in a different language that was first published in English in 1986 or 1987?

message 22: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizvegas) Terri- it may be easier if you have a specific book in mind for me to make that judgement...

message 23: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jml_417) For these types of tasks in the past, I've found that Wikipedia is a great jumping off point. Just type in the year you're looking for along with "in literature".

For example - type in 1986 in literature and click on the link for "New Books".

You'll still have to check the publication date in the actual book, or here on goodreads, because there are some errors, but all in all, it's been a big help for me in the past.

Hope this helps.

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments This Goodreads book says this list is based off publication date. But I'd still check!

Terri FL (territhemuse) | 615 comments For instance Hear the Wind Sing by Haruki Murakami was first published in 1979 but the first English translation was in 1987.

Sure, Terri. That works for me :)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments I just wanted to say that The Complete Maus (1987) by Art Spiegelman is really good! It's a nonfiction account of the author's father's experiences during the Holocaust told in graphic novel format.

Oh, yay! That's what I'm planning to use for this task. Thanks, Sara.

message 29: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 9027 comments I think i've read that...in fact, it might still be on a bookshelf somewhere, I used it when I took a history class on the holocaust in college

message 30: by Sara ♥ (last edited Sep 02, 2010 09:15PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments I loved how each group of people were represented by a different animal. The Jews were mice... Germans were cats, Poles were pigs, French were frogs, Americans were dogs (ha!). It was great. Of course, it IS about the Holocaust, so don't expect a happy-go-lucky book, but it was a very interesting and unique telling, for sure!

chucklesthescot Is it ok to do a re-read for this task? My all time favourite book It was published in 1986 and it's been at least 3 years since I read it!
