Judy (dujyt) Wow...this was quite the plot twisting read. Found myself thinking about this book long after I'd finished it--a good sign. I like character-driven books, and this feature was the book's strong point for me.

LynnB In this story, the main characters, a family of five, were portrayed realistically for the most part. From the beginning, it is apparent that this family had dealt with some serious issues in their lives over the years. According to the cover of the book something major was going to happen, but it took a long time to occur. When the climax was revealed, it was horrifyingly sad. I did get emotionally attached to some of the characters, and it is a story where you need a tissue at the ready. If available, I would have given it 3-1/2 stars.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 986 comments I read this on my Nook using their read for an hour a day free feature. I questioned the wisdom of doing this after I teared up on several occasions.

Quindlen's story was haunting! When the title of the book shows up in the story it stopped me cold. It was also at this point my hour expired, and I had to wait until the next day to continue.

Like Judy, I thought this was a strong, character-driven book. I felt I knew the family and could recognize them as friends or neighbors or even as my own family. It made me think about what we see or choose to see, and how we explain away things to ourselves.

The story will make you think and stick with you long after you read it.

Emily | 1 comments Can someone please tell me who the 2 voices are when Mary Beth is lying injured? One, I assume, is Kiernan. Who is the other? Is this revealed in the book somewhere? Maybe it was obvious, but I missed it and it is really bugging me!
