Wonder if there should be a task that involves reading magazines.

Magazines- at least the ones I read (EW, People) tend to be more pictures than actual text/articles. Task suggestion: With school restarting, think about your favorite class (hs or college allowed). Read a book related to that class that expands your knowledge. For example, if you loved History classes, but know very little about the Colonial era - read a book (fiction or non-fiction) that is set in that time period. You might pick up some new fun facts and find an enjoyable book along the way!
Nicki wrote: "Not sure if this has been suggested - but how about - read the first two books in a series that is new to you."I like this! It's almost hard to NOT find series book, always seems like something is part of a series. I just picked up a book the other day, it's the 3rd in a series and didn't even realize it until I started reading it (doesn't seem like you need to read the first three). Just seems like as long as there are good characters, almost anythign can be a series...James Patterson is starting a new series (like he needs another one)
So this one might be good, since there are new series popping up everywhere it seems.
While I like the series idea...I don't know that I like having to start a new series and read the first 2 books. What if you hate the first one? Why force yourself into the misery of reading the second? What if it were something more like "read the first book in a new series AND the next book in a series you are currently reading"? You're still getting the series flavor, but maybe not being forced to read more than 1 in a bad series. Also, it leaves it open enough that if you like book #1, you can read book #2.
Hmmm...what if it was just read two books from a series? Because there may be people that are not reading a series at all. Or don't like reading series, so they could start 2 new series.
I think I mentioned something like that a week or so ago! I like it...and if there are no series that you read, then two new to you series..Christine wrote: "While I like the series idea...I don't know that I like having to start a new series and read the first 2 books. James Rollins/James Clemens
Things can get stressful in the Fall with school starting up again & preparing for the holidays. Lighten the mood with a book that makes you laugh:http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/51...

I'm with you Beth - leaving this evening, back sunday afternoon with no internet, but lots of time to finish up some books before the challenge begins!
one of my groups is using this for a monthly challenge, but it would also work here...read a book on your popular books list...to find this out, go to the friends tab at the top of the screen and then there is a tab that says popular books. read the first book on the list that you haven't read...basically, it looks at all the books on your friends lists and lists them by number of people who also have them listed...

neither had i,but its really cool...and i said the first one you haven't read...because if you look at mine, i've read like the first 5 books (guess me and my friends have lots in common)
we did a last book you rated 5 stars, find someone else who rated 5 stars...i don't think we did a popular reads...but this challenge was my first one, so maybe its been done before
I think we did one a couple challenges ago. I really liked it! But it gave a little more leeway -- it might have been "in your friends' top ten" or something like that. Which is good for me, because the highest book on my list that I haven't read is one that I simply can't read, because of the topic.
We did do a task like that last Spring, unless I'm misunderstanding. I remember it because I had to actually befriend someone on Goodreads, and because I was all happy that I could fit Discworld books into it."15.6 - Friends and Friends of Friends
A.For the first part of this task read a book that is popular among the lists of your Goodreads friends that you have never read...to see a list of these books click on this link Popular Books
AND
B.For the second part of this task click on this link (Friends Of Friends) and select the first person on this list and read a 5 star book from their list."
I wasn't sure where to put this comment but thought it would be OK here. One of the greatest things that I find I get out of participation in the challenges is learning about new resources on the internet. One of those for the fall challenge is the literature map. What a cool concept for a website. I know one of my goals is going to read some of the authors that the map shows close to my favorite authors. Thank you all for your contributions. This is certainly a creative group of readers.
Well said Sheila! I liked the literature map as well and plan to use it for a lot of future reading.

I think the comments have been interesting - it seems that most people who have completed this task have found that the literature map was pretty good at suggesting new authors. I'm excited about it.

The new person wants to know if she can add a task suggestion, and if so please read the following suggestions:1. Finish or re-read a book that you put aside at least 5 yrs or more ago (that way you can start again!)
2. Re-read a book that you were forced to read
at school/university, etc but either did not finish
or were not able to relate to at the time.
(Sorry about the weird formating, my laptop is one of those dodgey HP's for which HP refuses to offer support even though they created a faulty product! Sorry about the opinion offering too!)
In any case there are a number of books I have not finished or could not get the feel of but which are considered "must" reads in literary circles.

Great suggestions, Melissa. I have a few of those books myself. Task creation for the Fall Challenge is complete. However, feel free to submit these ideas for the next challenge (the Winter Challenge) when the thread for that challenge appears (should be up around the first of November). Thanks!
