SOLVED. Children's book about a boy caring for a puppy in an abandoned car [s]

A friend is looking for this book. It was about a boy who found a stray puppy and kept him in an old abandoned car in the woods, took care of the puppy, etc. There was a climactic scene in which there was a flood and the kiddo had to rescue the dog.

Dog! by Prudence Andrew

Having just re-read Dog! by Prudence Andrew, I have to strongly second that this is the book that your friend is looking for.

The main character, Andrew, lives in a housing development that doesn't allow dogs. He's always wanted a dog more than anything else in the world. One day he sees a stray dog, that he ends up tracking down and decides he wants to keep it. He can't take it home, so he sets it up in an old abandoned car in a field. He names the dog Pooper, and they play and have a great time, until one day when Andrew comes, Pooper is extremely sick and won't move or eat. Andrew tries to stay in the car with the dog overnight, hoping to get help from some adult friends the next day who are out of town, but late at night he realizes that he can't wait, and needs to get the dog help now. When he tries to leave, he discovers that the nearby stream has flooded and the car is surrounded, and he has to try to escape and save himself and the dog.

I've read it too, and Dog! by Prudence Andrew was the first thing I thought of when I read the subject line.
