I like sad endings to a point. If they're a reality kind of sad ending I love them. If an author does it just to be adverse, I usually don't take much pleasure in reading them. And no, I don't consider them cliffhangers necessarily. Like Peep said, it's the shock factor that makes a cliffhanger.

Darryl Markowitz (darrylsmarkowitz) | 15 comments "Depends on how sad." I don't know why I get a chuckle from that but I do :)Thanks Becca for that explanation Reality sad ending. I can see that because it has meaning but I think you're the first I've heard to say they like sad endings, so interesting. I hate that too when authors are in love with emo. But that's a good explanation, 'shock value.'

Maggie61 | 5 comments While I do like a lot of books that are in a series, it is frustrating to go to a store, find a book that sounds great, find out it's part of a series and you can't find the earlier ones.

Becca | 1608 comments gah! I do that all the time Maggie. It happens at the library too. So annoying!

Happens more then I'd like to admitt, I will also get books from friends and find out they gave me like number 3 in a series

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Ottilie, that is cruel. If you get something from a friend they should start you at the beginning.

But there's always Amazon and other on line stores. Surely they have all the books in any series? At libraries, if you encounter missing series books, you can request they purchase them. A lot of times they'll get them for you!

It was funny she didn't even know likily it was a series if you didn't read the ones before it you were okay cause of the amount of summery and not direct plot

I don't buy books unless I really truly love them, then I buy them to re-read rather than read for the first time. The problem with requesting the library buy them is that is takes FOREVER for them to approve (or disprove) the request and then FOREVER to actually get the book in the system and sent to me. I've done it once and was too annoyed to do it again. I'd rather go to the book store when I get a chance and read it there. I know, not good for me to do, but if I end up loving it, I always buy it from the store I've been reading it at, kind of like a thank you. The only time I buy books without pre-reading them is when I absolutely love everything else I've ever read by the author.

Heidi Becca it really stinks that your library's system is so slow. Mine is wonderful and I normally get books within 1 week of requesting them.

Becca | 1608 comments If it's just a request, it takes just a couple of days, but if I have to request that they BUY them, it takes forever. My library is awesome and has a great selection, but I have run through a few series that they don't have all the books to.

Darryl Markowitz (darrylsmarkowitz) | 15 comments One more option you might be surprised with and that is shooting the author or publisher a request to donate to the local library! Some are quite willing to do so if you express a love for reading the books! Just have the address and contact info handy and if you get a 'yes' then alert the library and ask for notification when it arrives. it will take them a little time to catalog it.

Ottilie (ottilie_weber) | 484 comments I know I had to donate a copy of my book to the library in my town.

Yes, I've done the same, but it's a good feeling.

Ottilie (ottilie_weber) | 484 comments Haha yeah it is, I can't get over it. I also donated a copy to my old high school, my sister goes there now she keeps saying she's going to go look to see if she can find it
