Karendenice May I ask a few questions? Is the person whose identity we are trying to guess the main character of the book? Or can he be a side-kick?

I believe there's a separate thread for sidekicks. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 407 comments Yes, there is a separate thread for sidekicks. So it's the main character we're looking for.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 445 comments Yes, this is a main character.

1. I’m a former LAPD cop who lost my job because of alcoholism.
2. I also lost my husband and my kids.
3. Now I’m fighting my way back to sobriety and as a private detective.
4. I’m not very likeable, I’m short-tempered and gruff, with no patience.
5. I was such a mess because I fell in love with my partner who was killed in the line of duty.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 1438 comments I'm not familiar with this character, but she sounds interesting.

message 407: by Carol/Bonadie (last edited Oct 25, 2010 09:09AM) (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 445 comments These are the last two. I'll reveal the answer if no one gets these.

6, Oh, and I also killed a suspect while drunk -- that got me fired.
7. My author wrote a TV series about a British police officer very much like me.

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 407 comments something by Linda La Plant?

Gatorman | 7679 comments Charlotte (Buried in Books) wrote: "something by Linda La Plant?"

Funny, I was thinking the same thing (last clue possibly referring to "Prime Suspect") but could not find any character she wrote about in books that fit the clues.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 445 comments Charlotte (Buried in Books) wrote: "something by Linda La Plant?"

You are both close. Lynda La Plante wrote a 3-book series starring former LAPD Lorraine Page. The series is very dark, but unputdownable.

Cold Shoulder
Cold Blood
Cold Heart

Charlotte, want to go?

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 407 comments I can't think of anything at the moment.

Anyone else want a go?

message 412: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 71 comments OK, I'll give it a try. I don't think this one has been done, although it may be easy for those who've read the books.

1. I'm an elderly coroner.
2. I was educated in Paris.
3. I have ties to the supernatural.

message 413: by [deleted user] (new)

Could it be the one in Asia? Read about it, not the books - if it is these. Sound a bit spooky. Don't remember the name though.

message 414: by T (new)

T (twoo) Ahhh sounds like another series I should check out!

I'm going to back Laura up with the guess of a name... is it Dr. Siri Paiboun? The first in this series by Colin Coterill is
The Coroner's Lunch

message 416: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 71 comments Yep, you got it Carol. I love the Colin Coterill series.

I will defer to Laura for the next protagonist, since she clearly knew it except for the name.

message 418: by T (new)

T (twoo) Waking this thread up a bit....

1. I'm a private investigator.
2. My trusty sidekick is part wolf.

message 419: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39308 comments I hate to make a guess this early.

How about a couple of more clues?

message 420: by T (new)

T (twoo) 3. I live and work in Alaska.
4. My previous significant other has died and I am caring for his teen aged son.

message 421: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39308 comments Well, let's see if anyone else will hazard a guess before I answer.

message 422: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39308 comments Guess there are no other takers.

How about Kate Shugak?

I recently received a good reads giveaway from Dana Stabenow.

message 423: by T (new)

T (twoo) Yup, it's yours Jan C - and I also won "Though Not Dead" recently. First one I've read of Dana's, and I'm looking forward to finding the first 16 books in the series!

Jan C (woeisme) | 39308 comments I have read a couple others of hers.

message 431: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) I should know this but I am stumped. I was first going to say Lady Mary Wimsey (Lord Peter's sister) but that doesn't fit since she is only a supporting character in Lord Peter stories. This is a toughie!!!!!!

message 432: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39308 comments No, not Lady Mary.

This character is the star of her own books. It is a fairly lengthy series. 14 volumes as of 1999 (the publishing date of the last one I finished. )

message 437: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39308 comments You are correct!

I didn't really know it would be this difficult.

Take it away, T.

Karendenice T what can you possibly put in google to come up with the name?

message 441: by T (new)

T (twoo) Karendenice - do you mean what did I use to come up with Daisy Dalrymple?

message 442: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Yes, please. I don't think I have all of my marbles today and I can't for the life of me think how you could have done it.

message 443: by T (last edited Dec 13, 2010 07:15PM) (new)

T (twoo) Karendenice: I'm sure your marbles are just fine, I just happened to hit the right combination in the right order and scrolled through the first page of results.

I think I must have used something like this:

mystery ww1 magazine writer scotland yard chief inspector

And then the clincher was seeing "Daisy", which matched clue #10 about a name being a flower.

message 444: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Thanks T. Ill have to try that sometime. Some of these are really hard.

message 445: by T (new)

T (twoo) I don't read much of the British mysteries, so those are all hard for me....I am trying a couple of authors that cropped up in these games, though - currently reading a PJ Tracy one and liking it a lot!

message 446: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice I think I have a few of Traceys books but shame on me I havent read them yet. Have had them for a few years. Ill definitly check them out. Im reading a Sookie Stackhouse book right now.
