SOLVED. Psychological story about teens in alternate reality with food pellets [s]

I read this book in high school. It was kind of gut-wrenching because the fight for survival led the teen guinea pigs to betray one another, etc. So the kids in the book were like lab rats and ended up in sort of a maze or some such place, perhaps as punishment. Then there became complicated rules based on which they were granted food pellets. So they were rewarded for "bad," selfish behavior and not for cooperation, etc., as I recall. I can't remember how it ended. It was pretty grim.

Thanks, Emma. I think it was already there, but duplicates are no problem.

The way group shelves work is if the most popular edition (at the time of shelving) isn't shelved, it won't show as shelved. But, I'd much rather have possible duplicates than missing books.

Like another of our frequently-looked-for books, it's by William Sleator. The man certainly writes memorable books!
