Why is the description sometimes blank?

Some books seem to have missing descriptions from the XML -- eg. this one is present on the website:

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53...

but if you query it via XML, is an empty node:

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53...

Is there a reason for this?

I think it has to do with where we got the description and what the permissions associated with relationship are. I'll ask someone who knows better though.

Yes - many of our book descriptions come from amazon and we aren't - per their terms - allowed to give those to third parties. You can get them yourself from amazons API though.
