Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments That's what I do. I've been on a horror kick for close to a year now, but I force myself to switch it up with fantasy, sci fi, etc. I don't want horror to get boring as it has in the past when that was all I read.

message 52: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I jumped over to classics for a while and read several good ones. I also read general fiction, too, and need to read more fantasy/sci-fi. I'll occasionally read one in this genre if it strikes my fancy, like John Varley's Mammoth and Greg Bear's Darwin's Radio.

I just can't get into dragons/fairies/enchanted kingdoms kind of fantasy.

Bobbie Last Dragon Standing by G. A. Aiken (#4 in Dragon Kin)
&
No Mercy by Sherrilyn Kenyon (#19 in Dark Hunters)

Aloha | 4052 comments I recently listened to two overlong disappointing fantasy. That kind of burn me out on fantasy. By contrast, all the recent horror were pulse-pounding, absorbing and quick, with the exception of The Passage. Even Hellhouse became great when I listened to it. I want another horror adrenaline rush.

message 55: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 4052 comments I also need things that makes my mind play with it. So once in a while, I crave literature with lots of symbolism in it.

message 56: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments I'm not a big fan of "enchanted" fantasy much, either. I like some of it, like JRR Tolkien and limited others. The fantasy I'm really into right now has no elves or fairies. They're usually about war and are as gritty as hell.

Mark (markmckeejr) | 133 comments Aloha wrote: "That looks good. When you do get yourself up to read it, give me a Clift Note on it. :o) I'll have to check out Robert Howard. He's not in my fantasy folder. I have like a zillion fantasy books..."

Howard did the original Conan stories and had a precursor character named Kull. There are 3 volumes of Conan stories from Del Rey and 1 volume of Kull. All are available in paperback and Kindle formats. Of the 4, my favorite is the 1st volume of Conan followed closely by the 3rd.

Karen Miller's book/series looks like a fantasy-horror from what I can tell. Many negative reviews on Amazon came from people who weren't expecting it to be so "angry", lol.

message 58: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments I've never read Conan or Kull, but really want to. I might pick some up for my Kindle.

message 59: by Mark (new)

Mark (markmckeejr) | 133 comments Jason, you can sample the Conan stories and (I think) one of the Kull stories on Project Gutenberg Australia.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Aloha, last year I listened to The Shining on audio. It was fantastic. Not sure if there's only one audio version, though. I really immersed myself in the story and it made me appreciate how great King was back in the day. Lean prose with nary a hunk of fat to be seen (or heard).

Melanie Jackson (melaniejaxn) | 17 comments Just downloaded a sample for 33 A.D.-- I have hopes, just not enough to commit without reading a sample :-).

message 67: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 177 comments I got a self-published collection called Fetal Bait Apocalypse from Joel Arnold, an omnibus of three story collections. They're variable (as story collections tend to be) but there are some excellent stories there! I'm really glad I bought these.

message 76: by Tracy (new)

Tracy While the Savage Sleeps by Andrew Kaufman and it was the best horror book I had read in a very long time. The story kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. If you haven't read it yet it isn't very expensive on Amazon and worth every cent!

message 77: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 8320 comments I downloaded Savage a while ago on my Nook but have yet to read it. Based on all the positives I've read, I'll have to get to it soon.

message 78: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Tracy, thanks! I'll look into this.

Bandit recommended The Rift that I was able to buy at Amazon and it's really good! Didn't want to put it down last night but had to after getting hit in the face three times with my Kindle. It's a good read if I get assaulted three times before turning out the light.

message 79: by Bandit (new)

Bandit (lecturatoro) | 8821 comments I'm glad you're liking The Rift, Tressa

and it's a well-edited self published book, so it IS possible to do :)

message 83: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments LOL. Bandit, haven't seen any typos yet, but you know how they just fly right over my head when I'm grooving on the story.

Jenn, hope you enjoy In the Woods. I did.

message 90: by Craig (new)

Craig Hallam (craighallam) I could make a suggestion, but it's a shameless self-plug. If no one minds, it's my dark short story collection called 'Not Before Bed' and you can take a look over here:
