Chade66 | 5 comments Let's see, there is Jennifer Roberson (we went to the same University and share an interest in dogs so were on the same dog list for a long time), Tracy Hickman, Michael Stackpole (he used to shop in a bookstore I worked in), James O'Barr, Diana Paxson, Bjo Trimble (who stayed at a friend of mine's house when she was in town for a convention), Andre Norton (wrote me a letter in response to a paper I was writing in college), Elizabeth Lynn (also responded to a paper I was writing), and Rob Asprin.

message 2: by Debra (new)

Debra (debrapurdykong) I've been to a couple of conferences where Diana Gabaldon was guest of honor. (She's a terrific speaker, by the way). Anyhow, last October I won honorable mention in a short fiction competition (there was one first prize and two honorable mentions) sponsored by the Surrey International Writers' Conference. Diana and Jack Whyte were the judges and I had the thrill of receiving my certificate from Diana and handshakes and congratulations from both of them. And then our picture was taken together. It was very exciting.

message 3: by Kat (new)

Kat | 16 comments Ed Greenwood is an egotistical ass.

message 4: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) I met Kim Harrison when she was signing The Outlaw Demon Wails in February in California. She was very friendly and prettier than the picture on the back of her books.

I also had the pleasure of meeting our esteemed moderator, Suzann, who is also an author. :)

Let's see... I'm going to Kathy Reichs's book signing later this year.

message 5: by Steven (last edited Jun 24, 2008 04:22AM) (new)

Steven (stevenschend) | 5 comments Kat, would you care to elaborate why you came to this opinion of Ed Greenwood? I've never heard anyone say anything poor about the man other than being overly friendly.

message 6: by Steven (new)

Steven (stevenschend) | 5 comments As for authors I've enjoyed meeting:

Jim Hines was very supportive of both fans and fellow writers; George R.R. Martin was a very interesting guest to chat with at Foolscap in Seattle a few years ago; I'd love to meet Charles de Lint one of these years, as I've deeply enjoyed his work for quite some time.

For those who want the most authors per square footage that isn't World Fantasy or Science Fiction, I suggest getting a day pass at Gen Con in Indianapolis, IN. The usual authors in attendance include Mike Stackpole, Bob Salvatore, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, Ed Greenwood, Jean Rabe, Matt Forbeck, Jeff Grubb, Troy Denning, Doug Niles (though not as often of late by those last few). There's also a Writer's Symposium of seminars for working writers (of which I'm a part and a fellow author), if you're looking for programming that doesn't skew only toward gaming. Honestly--a lot of fantasy and SF writers are gamers, so there's a good chance of meeting many there.

message 7: by Kat (new)

Kat | 16 comments Greenwood was at a D&D mini-con a few friends and I went to. A friend bought a whole bunch of Forgotten Realms books (over $100 worth) and Greenwood refused to sign a single book without the friend paying $20 for the autograph.

Now- I've seen major celebrities at cons charge WAY less than that, and the funds are usually going towards photos and some type of charity that the celeb sponsors. With authors, usually if a person has bought a book the author doesn't charge for the signature. Not so with Greenwood. After that incident, I have nothing positive to say about the man.

message 8: by Steven (new)

Steven (stevenschend) | 5 comments I don't know what to say there, unless you've possibly mistaken Ed for some other author at that show; it truly doesn't sound like Ed in the least. I've never heard of him charging for nor refusing anyone an autograph before. In my experience, he's one of the most gracious and nice people you could possibly meet.

message 9: by Kat (new)

Kat | 16 comments Nope. It was him. Impossible to mistake the awful haircut. Sad to say.

message 10: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I had a back and forth email with Kathryn Smith (I think she's fairly new) by way of the livejournal community fangs_fur_fey. I also had the chance to sort of talk thru messages with J.F. Lewis (author of Staked) and he told me a sequel is in the works.

message 11: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 21 comments Met authors through local SF conventions and at Romantic Times this past April. Like Kim Harrison, Jeri Smith-Ready )(she just let me interview her for my author newsletter for my readers), Terry Brooks at Dragoncon years ago and at our first Ravencon in 2006 here in Richmond (http://ravencon.com ). Met other authors too, in person and online and through my publisher I am with.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) I had conversations on forums with authors(i.e the B&N bookclub forums.) and I must say they have all been gracious and really nice with trying to answer everyones questions.

message 13: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) Jeaniene Frost emailed me back! I was so estatic!

message 14: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb Cool!

message 15: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) She basically said she was glad I loved her book and she hoped I enjoyed One Foot as well. I basically broke down the parts i liked and didn't like about One Foot and one of them was that Bones had so many women from his past bursting from the woodwork and she linked me to a forum where they are discussing it: http://www.frostfans.com/forums/viewt...

I haven't had the chance to read it but she seems so nice!

message 16: by Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (last edited Aug 06, 2008 08:39AM) (new)

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Right now I'm conversing with Gena Showalter over on B&N book club forum about her series LOTU. She seems like a great person. She's answering all of of questions and concerns about the series without giving too much away but also giving us some insight. She'll be there on the forum all month long. Also they're having LKH on their center stage on the 25th I can't wait to ask her some questions about Blake(even though I hve her as a friend on myspace I've never left her any messages)

message 17: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitaw) | 19 comments I went to a Charlaine Harris book signing last May - she was very kind and gracious. I was surpised at how few people were there - maybe 50 or 60. It was the middle of the week in the suburbs of DC, though, and I don't think Borders did anything to promote it.

message 18: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) Middle of the week signings stink... I wanted to go see Kim Harrison again in San Diego, but she scheduled it for a Wednesday. I live in Arizona so I wasn't going to take off work to drive over for a one hour event. Last year she did it on a Friday night so I was able to just get off work a few hours early.

message 19: by DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (last edited Mar 04, 2009 09:15PM) (new)

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 113 comments I too have had some really nice exchanges on the B&N forums with Lori Handeland and Jeaniene Frost discussing their books (in fact several authors regularly post in the random discussions and they're all really nice). I've exchanged several e-mails with both Adrian Phoenix and Amy Lane - two awesome ladies. And I'm hoping to attend a reading with Mike Carey at the end of the month.

message 20: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 32 comments I've sort of met Lynn Viehl online. I read her blog all the time. Periodically she does give-aways, and at the begginning of this year I won a copy of Stay the Night, and the companion e-book Master of Shadows. She printed out the e-book, and put it in a binder for me, and autographed both books. Viehl is hilarious and super cool!

message 21: by Jason (new)

Jason | 36 comments I think we get a fair number of authors here in Seattle. I met and chatted with Charles DeLint when he did his Grrl Lost tour. I actually spoke with his manager (friend/relative in the Seattle area) for a while, and recommended they check out Cafe Flora--the Yam fries are quite good. I have had the pleasure to meet Neil Stephenson, Richelle Mead, Orson Scott Card, and Camille DeWitt. All very nice people. I went to college with Pat Rothfuss and use to play Magic with him, god that was years ago.

message 22: by Kieraanne (new)

Kieraanne I exchanged a few emails with Tate Halloway. She seemed really nice and sent me some free books for "guessing" her real name.

Jamie ~ Bad Boy Inspector (jamie_badboyinspector) | 4 comments I went to a chat with J.R. Ward before. She is so funny and loves to cut up with her fans. She also has a section on her board that she regularly posts in and answers fans questions. I am planning to go to her signing in Radcliff, KY in May to meet her in person.

message 24: by Anton Strout (new)

Anton Strout | 21 comments I keep running into that maniac Anton Strout, author of the Simon Canderous urban fantasy series. It's like he's stalking me or something. If I disappear mysteriously, have the cops check him out first!

message 25: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 32 comments When in may is Ward coming to Kentucky? I want to go! And why Radcliff?? It's a hole!

Jamie ~ Bad Boy Inspector (jamie_badboyinspector) | 4 comments Sat May 9th, RADCLIFF, KY: 6 p.m. The Bookstore

I am not sure why she choose Radcliff. She is also going to be in Crestview Hills KY but the date hasn't been set for this one.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Anton...
You're hysterical! I like your sense of humor. It's kinda like mine.
:D

message 28: by Jessica (last edited Mar 12, 2009 08:12PM) (new)

Jessica | 169 comments haha, indeed. The weirdo keeps showing up on this great forum I'm on. At least his books are good!

BTW- liquified rats- HILLARIOUS!

message 29: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments Adrian Phoenix-I dropped her a line on here to say how much I loved A Rush of Wings and she wrote back the the quickness. She was very gracious. THEN, she wrote me again yesterday to thank me after she'd read my review! How sweet! It was my lil thrill for the day.

message 30: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) I've had the pleasure of meeting Charlaine Harris (a real sweetie) a couple of times, Jim Butcher, Patricia Briggs and Carrie Vaughn. I trade e-mails with Thomas Sniegoski and Terri Garey. Have met lots of mystery authors as I regularly attend Bouchercon, a mystery conference that is held in a different location every year.

OM NOM NOM! Sorry.. that made me thirsty!

message 32: by Bitten_by_Books (new)

Bitten_by_Books | 1 comments I have met tons of authors online because we host so many paranormal/urban fantasy events with them. In person?

Jim Butcher
J.R. Ward
Molly Harper
Mark Henry
Caitlin Kittredge
Kat Richardson
Anya Bast
Shiloh Walker
Richelle Mead
Maddie James

I am sure there are a couple more but they are slipping my mind. :)

message 33: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) Jennifer wrote: "I just attended a book signing this weekend with Jim and Shannon Butcher. Jim writes the Dresden files and the Codex Alera series; Shannon writes suspense and paranormal romance. They were a fant..."

I met Jim at Mile-Hi Con last year. Really great guy!

message 34: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Hill (peanutty_hillgirl) | 3 comments I met Kim Harrison for her White Witch, Black Curse book signing. Also I met LKH at a book signing for A Lick of Frost. Almost met Richelle Mead recently, but couldn't go at the last minute cause my ride canceled!

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 113 comments Met Rachel Caine last night at a signing. She was very sweet - even if I couldn't get any Carpe Corpus spoilers out of her. ;)

Jennifer, I am SOOOO jealous! I've been trying to meet JB and his wife for a while now, but they never come to Nashville. Oy! A friend of mine got me a signed book at ComiCon last year, but it's not the same...

message 37: by Minimaniac977 (last edited May 27, 2009 01:58AM) (new)

Minimaniac977 Holmes-Morgan | 3 comments I actually personally know Sean McMullen and he sends me books every now and then. i alsow personally know jane godwin

message 38: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 822 comments I met MaryJanice Davidson at my in person book club. One of the members was friends with her husband and asked him if she would come to talk to us about her books, then we read Undead and Unwed. I have to say that she is super funny and talks pretty much like how her books read. She was great and answered any questions we threw at her and stayed for about 2 hours. I had liked her as an author before, but like her even more now.

message 39: by Julia (last edited Dec 05, 2009 10:50PM) (new)

Julia | 615 comments I took a class from Elizabeth Lynn about 150 years ago in the Women's Study Dept at San Francisco State. It was called 'Women, Reality & Science Fiction.' We weren't sure if it was the first science fiction as literature class, but it was surely the first feminist sf class. (It was really the early 80s.)

I knew Sandra McDonald and Keith R.A. DeCandido in fandom many years ago before either of them had published books.

Charles de Lint and I have traded a few e-mails, but when I went to Ottawa I was too chicken to go see him play live music... (He plays Celtic music every Thursday ? at a bar in Ottawa.)

I read Lois McMaster Bujold's and Tanya Huff's blogs and occasionally comment.

message 40: by Tina (new)

Tina | 21 comments I've met Richelle Mead and Lilith Saintcrow. Fabulous women. They were hilarious together. Very friendly and talkative. I was a little star struck when I met them.

message 41: by Frances (new)

Frances (mothindarkness) I met Patricia Briggs at Spocon last Sept. I can't say enough nice things about her, and her husband as well. Nice, funny, approachable, brilliant... and I never really even read her fiction before that. I'm truly jealous of that Andre Norton contact mentioned, my all time favorite.

Frances

message 42: by Frances (new)

Frances (mothindarkness) She's a really amazing person. I don't know if she'll be at the con next year, but I'm going again. The pros were so easy to talk to and helpful. Now I'm a con addict!! lol

Frances

message 43: by John (new)

John Hartness I was able to meet Neil Gaiman and Jim O'Barr at comic book conventions. Both of them were very gracious and took a ton of time to sign stuff for folks in long, long lines. Ditto Bill Willingham (the comic book Fables, which is amazing).

message 44: by Pagetranquility (new)

Pagetranquility | 12 comments John wrote: "I was able to meet Neil Gaiman and Jim O'Barr at comic book conventions. Both of them were very gracious and took a ton of time to sign stuff for folks in long, long lines. Ditto Bill Willingham (t..."

I met James O'Barr as well, this was last year at a comic convention. He seemed so sad to me, maybe it was just the day he was having, but he was also very kind, which really helped because being a shy person I felt very nervous to talk to him.

message 45: by Pagetranquility (new)

Pagetranquility | 12 comments Also met Christopher Moore. So glad I was able to thank him for all the humor he adds to my life and to readers in general. A very cool and interesting guy, the Q&A and just him speaking made it one of the most enjoyable signings I've been to.

message 46: by Ciera (new)

Ciera Jenkins (forgottenandalone2010) | 5 comments I have meet Sherrilyn Kenyon, J.R Ward, Kelley Armstrong, Melissa Marr,Rachel Caine, Phillip Pullman, Nora Roberts, Suzanne Brockmann, Jenna Black.
I have been to two different signings for Sherrilyn Kenyon the first was for Acheron and the second was for the re-release of Born of the Night. She is amazing to meet in person very fun and interactive. I will say the same for J.R Ward. I went to the signing for Lover Avenged in Kentucky and then she was at the 2009 RWA signing that was in Washington D.C. The RWA was where I meet Nora Roberts, Jenna Black and Suzanne Brockmann and many others. I only got books signed my these three though. Kelley Armstrong and Melissa Marr were touring together last year where I saw them at a signing at the local Barnes and Noble. They were awesome also very interactive with the crowd. I went to Ravoncon 2010 and got to hang out, go to panels, and chat with Rachel Caine which was probably the coolest thing ever. All of the above have been great authors to see that really seem to enjoy meet and greets with the fans. Phillip Pullman was a very good presenter and I think the whole thing would have been much more enjoyable for all readers If 99% of the questions weren't about the failed movie and his religious views.Okay the very first Author I ever got to meet was a disaster. Laurell K Hamilton isn't just a bad writer she is horrible to meet in person. The whole time she was at the Barnes and Noble her husband did the talking and when he wasn't talking she would like defer to him for answer about HER books. Not to mention the fact that we didn't come to meet him. But that doesn't matter since I can't really stomach reading her books any more. I would go see all of these authors again except Laurell K Hamilton.

message 47: by Mis_Reading (new)

Mis_Reading (tenoko1) Met Richelle Mead. Immediately stopped liking her work, not that I was a great fan, but I have respect for anyone who is considered a success.

She comes across and very fake and plastic, even condescending behind the plastered on smile. Just, very two dimensional.

message 48: by Megan (new)

Megan I got to meet Charlaine Harris and Johanna Parker (the Sookie audio book narrator) did a reading. They were both so nice and CH even signed my bottle of True Blood, lol. There is a picture on my profile if anyone wants to see.

message 49: by Roshio (new)

Roshio | 7 comments I met Darren Shan and I just wanted to be his friend. He's so cool, down to earth and was great with the kids (and adults :P). Plus when you go to take a pic, he pretends to choke you haha. the best part is he actually literally takes the time to think up something cool to write and he's such a great writer he comes up with amazing stuff so fast (i checked what he wrote on my friends' books as well).

message 50: by Jenese (new)

Jenese (jsnow09) | 14 comments I was able to meet Jeaniene Frost from the Night Huntress series at the RWA literary book signing in July. She was awesome! She signed two of my books, one of them she signed..."Life is too short, bit hard" lol Loved it.

I also met Nalini Singh from the Psy-Changeling series and Guild Hunter series, Allyson James/Jennifer Ashley from the Stormwalker series and many many others books. There was sooooo many authors it's hard to name them all, but Kelley Armstrong, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Nora Roberts, Suzanne Brockmann, and many more were there that I was able to see and take pics of, it not meet them. :) Soooo much fun! I was like a kid in the candy store.
