Olivia (littledhampir25) | 86 comments I loved the idea of loving mockingjay and it was the worst book of the trilogy. I liked the Hunger games because their was Peeta and his lovey dovey way. There was none of that in Mockingjay.

Kate | 8205 comments Yeah, my friend was telling me about when they were watching a movie version of one of the books they read in English, and this kid goes "Look how close he is to the bushes! That must mean he's insecure."

As obviously farfetched as that is, I feel like English teachers do the same thing a lot of the time.

message 104: by Mandie (new)

Mandie | 355 comments Yeah. Basically it can be as unlikely as you want just as long as you can back it up with arguments.

AnQi (anqiyu) | 57 comments I just recently read a book called A Soft Place to Land by Susan Rebecca White. Although at the end of the book, some of the conflicts were resolved, it otherwise just basically ended abruptly. I don't like it when books end like that.

message 106: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments Seriously, I think junior year is when everything magically has symbolic meaning... Last year, when we read Julius Caesar, Mac--The Scottish Play, and The Count of Monte Cristo, we were reading for history. This year, suddenly the freaking color of a handkerchief is significant to what the story is supposed to mean to us.

Pssssst... I think the author wants us to figure it out for ourselves, and decide what WE think...

message 107: by Kate (last edited Dec 26, 2010 05:58AM) (new)

Kate | 8205 comments YOU GOT TO WAIT UNTIL JUNIOR YEAR? Not fair! I'm a freshman. We just finished reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and one of the big things we talked about was the symbolism of hands and the house. Then before that was the Catcher in the Rye–more symbolism, and also the Scottish play–almost completely symbolism (and motifs) if you listened to my English teacher.

Then of course, you go back to eight grade where we looked for symbolism in "The Lottery" and then had to write our own short story with symbolism. (Here it is. Can you spot the symbolism?)

I wish we could just read for history.

message 108: by Kate (last edited Dec 26, 2010 01:34PM) (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Nope. There are a bunch of little symbols that don't really matter, like the gold ring is actually adulthood, but the whole point of the book is the fact that he's in
****SPOILER ALERT****

some sort of institution, and that he's talking to some sort of doctor or psychoanalyst or something, not to himself or you. (According to my English teacher. That's definitely true, but I don't know if it really matters that much)

****END SPOILER ALERT****

I agree that it's about growing up, etc. but apparently, it's only part of the focus.

natalie | 5047 comments Sometimes I hate English teachers because I really disagree with them sometimes and they make you write out so much stuff about symbols and I totally don't agree with them! They make it seem like EVERYTHING is a symbol!

message 111: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments The confusion about the Catcher in the Rye, I think. That's why I don't like reading books in English, because it changes your perception, rarely for the good.

message 112: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments I know what you mean. You can always disagree, though.

The whole book was damn awful. I cringe thinking about it... The first two were marvelous, but Mockingjay was atrocious.

I'm with the other mods (Jess & Taylor). MOCKINGJAY was very slapworthy. *shakes head*
I didn't really like the ending of THE IRON KING - I know it was supposed to set up for book two, but still... and THE REPLACEMENT's ending was pretty disappointing.
I think I mentioned SAPPHIQUE already...oh and FORGIVE MY FINS. Ugghh :S

AGREED with THE GIVER!
The sequels explain everything, but seriously...What if you don't know there are sequels?

Also every Goosebumps book except for a select few!

Let's not forget the weirdest ending ever.

No Passengers Beyond This Point! I didn't get it at all! Did anything really happen? If not why was his jacket being used as her sling, which supposedly happened in Falling Bird? ARRRGH!
That just RUINED an AMAZING book for me! X_x
Finally remember The End
SPOILER
where no-not one-of the conflicts was resolved. Not the Quagmire triplets, not VFD, just...nothing. Blech!

The Inheritance Cycle. They were sooo awesome, and then Inheritance just ended. Complete cliffhanger

message 118: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Stringer | 117 comments Allegiant's ending sucked, although I admit I didn't think much of the whole book.

message 119: by Funky Fish (new)

Funky Fish (goodreadscompetitcroissant) @Lynne, I completely and wholeheartedly agree with you. I was so engrossed with the first Divergent book and I couldn't wait to read more. Then Insurgent was kind of 'meh', and Allegiant was the worst out of the three, in my opinion. I didn't like the ending and I felt like the original concept had been lost. Sorry, all you Divergent fans :(

Another book with a disappointing ending was... Do I dare to say it? *cringes* The Blood Of Olympus, the last instalment in the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan.

I'M JUST LETTING EVERYONE KNOW, THERE MAY BE SPOILERS AHEAD. IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BLOOD OF OLYMPUS YET AND YOU WISH FOR THE ENDING TO REMAIN UNSPOILED, I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST TO GO NO FURTHER :)

I know, I know. I absolutely LOVE Riordan's books, so it feels kind of sacrilegious to not like one of the endings. But even I had to admit that the battle at the end was a bit... pathetic. Throughout the whole series, all the characters kept saying, "If Gaia wakes up, game over. We're all going to die." But then, when Gaia eventually DID wake up, nothing really happened. Leo blew her up, and that was it. The battle was over in a couple of pages.

And one of the characters was supposed to make a massive "sacrifice" to destroy Gaia, which Leo did. And he died. And then he came back to life. The end. The reader even KNOWS that Leo will come back to life because of the Physician's Cure. What would have made the ending better (in my opinion) would have been if the reader found out about the Physician's Cure AFTER Leo died, so then you're like, "Oh my gosh, he died!!!??? Noooooo!!!!" And then you're like, "Oh my gosh, he survived!!!??? Yayyyy!!!!" But instead, you're just like, "Oh. He died. Oh. He came back. Huh."

But never fear, Rick Riordan fans! The not-so-great ending was made up for with Octavian's death. That was HILARIOUS :D

Anyway, sorry for ranting, I can't help it when it comes to Riordan books! :)

message 120: by Habiba (new)

Habiba Eleanor and Park the worst ending in the history of books I guess?
This book was the third book that I've read by Rainbow Rowell, After that book I've decided that I'll never read her any other book because I end up disappointed by her books!

message 121: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Hansen | 30 comments Dragon flight by Anne McCaffrey.
The ending was pretty much the dragons flying off to battle the threads. The rest of the book was the build up to that battle and was actually pretty boring.

message 122: by areeba (new)

areeba (bookish_fantasies) | 40 comments I guess Allegiant had a pretty horrible ending. But the series wasn't that good anyways.
Winter by Marissa Meyer and Across a Star-Swept Sea by Diana Peterfreund had huge cliffhangers at the end and I really wanted to know what happened next.

AHH I AGREE. When I first read it I was like "that just it??" but I give it a high rating because, duh, it's a Riordan book. But after a while I lower down my rating, because NOTHING REALLY HAPPENED. It's just so anticlimatic and dissapointing, I was expecting a HUGE battle since Gaea was supposed to be stronger than Kronos (and the battle agains Kronos in TLO was EPIC) but it was over in a couple of pages and I think she was defeated too easily *sobs*

message 126: by Funky Fish (new)

Funky Fish (goodreadscompetitcroissant) @Tasya, I know, right!? I was so looking forward to the ending and then it was pretty disappointing. I agree, the battle with Kronos in The Last Olympian was AWESOME!! And you're right! Gaia was supposed to be even stronger than Kronos! What happened to the massive battle!? But I still rated The Blood Of Olympus 4 out of 5 stars because, like you said, duh, it's a Riordan book :)
