The second book in the series lost me partway through and I have no intention of going back. Just not my thing ...
I heard that the sex was explicit, too. However, I did not find the sex explicit nor the violence more than what is needed to tell the story. Call me jaded, but I did not find any of it gratuitous. I'm not done with the book yet. My opinion may change. MrsJoseph wrote: "Aloha wrote: "Thanks, Mrs. J! I am really enjoying A Game of Thrones. I have the eBook. I'll have to read this. I love fairy tales.Sharon wrote: "Jalilah wrote: "I started Beauty: A Retelling of Beauty & the Beast by Robin McKinnley and am loving it!"

Aloha wrote: "Thanks, Mrs. J! I am really enjoying A Game of Thrones. Now, this is what I was looking for, something well-written, great characterization, absorbing plot, and terrific descriptions..."I love the Malazan series! Each book keeps you on your toes and your brain working over time. It's like a puzzle that you can't quite see what's going on until the pieces start to fit together. Which I guess all equals to saying it's confusing. :)
But worth it. Imo.
Ooh, now that's my kind of book! I get bored with books where I can see what's going to happen, and the characters aren't that interesting. Thanks, Traci.
Sharon...I'm there with you on Song of Ice and Fire...I burned out on it and don't intend to read any further. We can't all agree.
Just started Ravenwoodand about 1/4 of the way in. Very good. I've read a couple of the author's other books, sci-fi settings, but this is (I think) his first fantasy and it is going very well.

Aloha, I'm glad to hear that you're liking A Game of Thrones. I love the Song of Ice and Fire series. Wait until you get to the third book, A Storm of Swords, they really up the blood and violence. I'm hearing that some of you lost interest in the series during A Storm of Swords, but personally it was one of my favorites.I'm reading The War of the Worlds. I've been on a scifi kick lately, and I have a lot more scifi on my plate for this month, but hopefully I can fit some fantasy in soon.
Traci wrote: "Finished The Waste Lands which I loved loved loved and now onto Wizard and Glass."Hi, Traci-
I'm currently re-reading Wizard and Glass.:)
Hi, Dustin, Lol.Hope you're liking it more than I do. I don't hate it. But there's a long stretch in the middle I'm finding very slow and boring.
Lucinda wrote: "I am currently reading a novel by Brian Ruckley called 'Winterbirth' which is based on fantasy genre. It is very 'wordy' and has a quite uniquely detailed plot that is taking time for me to 'get in..."I keep seeing that book pop up but I'm not sure about it. Let us know how you like it.
MrsJoseph wrote: "Currently reading The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and a few different random romances."An excellent choice! I liked the second book in the series much better, but the first was still unique and captivating.
Just finished Ravenwoodand really hope this is the first of a series. This is what I think of as a 'comfort read' and goes direct to my 'keep to re-read' list. Love the characters, especially the older, very atypical healer/witch main character. Good storyline, very entertaining.
When I finally finish Wizard and Glass, probably today or tomorrow, I'm taking a break from Dark Tower and will start Fool's Errand and then Mistborn: The Final Empire. Both rereads.

Hi!
I am loving the entire DT re-read. And Wizard & Glass is no exception.:) This is one of my favorites of the series, actually!
Dustin, I liked most of Wizard and Glass but the flashback was way too long for me. Still continuing after a break though.
Is anyone familiar with the Book of All Hours series by Hal Duncan?1. Vellum (2005)
2. Ink (2007)
They are exceptional IMO.
Read The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms for the second time. Took one star away but still a favorite. Now I'm rereading Elantris. Remembering it being the weakest of Sanderson's books but I don't remember much else.
I loved them all when a read them a few years ago but my taste within the last year has changed so much I want to read Sanderson again to see if he's as great as I thought or if I just thought he was great at the time.

I've heard of them, yes, but never managed to read them yet. They seem to be of an all-or-nothing kind. I do know that following Duncan's writing isn't always easy ;), so I think I'll keep them for some vacation time.

I read Vellum, or as least as much as I could stand... one of my few 1-star reviews.
Finished March's read, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. I ended up liking it more than I thought I would at the start. Very unusual fantasy.
I'm taking a break from fantasy - reading My Favorite Thief. It's pretty good so far. The right mix of suspense, flawed heroes, and past secrets. I'm half-way through, and so far no sex scene, just a growing attraction. I like that in a romance.
I just started Tome of the Undergates. So far, the reviews are right, it is a flawed book, but it's exactly like reading a D&D session with my group, i.e. full of utterly insane individuals who probably shouldn't be imbued with magical powers. I'm having a lot of fun with it.
I'm reading Divided Allegiance now, there is a big chance I'll read the last book in the series after it, I hate to leave a series in the middle.
after Beauty, which I just loved, I have started City of Ashes. I don't think The Mortal Instruments will be one of my all time favourite series, but up to now has been a lot of fun. Does anyone know if the rest are good?
Jalilah wrote: "after Beauty, which I just loved, "If you liked Beauty, you might want to try the Mercedes Lackey book The Fairy Godmother. A bit different but just as much fun.
Traci wrote: "Dustin, I liked most of Wizard and Glass but the flashback was way too long for me. I just wanted the Ka-Tet to journey forward. But now that I'm re-reading the series, I've been savoring the books, and I'm absolutely LOVING Roland and Susan's past, and everything else that's going on.:)
Still trying to push through The Wise Mans Fear but recently picked up some more of The Dresden Files series and am contemplating moving onto those as a break from the long tome. Can anyone reccommend some stand alone fantasy? I am getting a little tired of reading the first of a series then having to wait while I search out the next volume or waiting my turn at the library.

Hi Haydensdad, I'd recommend The Anvil of the World. There are more books set in this world, but this novel is a stand-alone. A Song for Arbonne is a stand-alone. I'm enjoying it so far. The Curse of Chalion is first in a series, but it wraps up entirely at the end, and I think it works fine by itself.

Have you read any Brandon Sanderson? Elantris and Warbreaker are standalones. Most books by Guy Gavriel Kay are too. And not standalone but because you're reading Dresden, Monster Hunter International, it can be read alone but is a series.
Chelsea wrote: "Haydensdad wrote: "Still trying to push through The Wise Mans Fear but recently picked up some more of The Dresden Files series and am contemplating moving onto those as a break from the long tome...."Thanks for the heads up. Curse of Chalion sounds really good.
Traci wrote: "Haydensdad wrote: "Still trying to push through The Wise Mans Fear but recently picked up some more of The Dresden Files series and am contemplating moving onto those as a break from the long tome...."I have read Elantris but not Warbreaker yet. The Monster Hunter International sounds very interesting and Guy Gaverial Kay has been mentioned to me before. Maybe I will have to give him a go. Thanks for the feedback.
Needed a 'comfort read' yesterday so picked up one of my newer favorites for a re-read.Beauty and the Werewolfis definitely second only to The Fairy Godmother in the 500 Kingdoms series.
Attention Los Angelinos and Orange Countiers: Robin Hobb will be at Mysterious Galaxy this Thursday!http://www.mystgalaxy.com/event/robin...
And I'm reading A Song for Arbonne. What a gorgeous book. Why haven't I read any Kay before?

I hear that! I would heartily recommend Kay any day over that other book (one of my two-stars).

I know a lot of people love it. I haven't picked it up yet because there are 10 books in the series...and they are all door-stoppers. But very popular (and I've heard rather bloody).
