pfft, I read Retribution Falls before it was cool

message 3702: by Traci (new)

Traci My have to reads are sequels to books and authors I love. Some recommendations. My want to reads are random books that I'll probably never get to.

message 3703: by Traci (new)

Traci Finished Black Lung. Up next is a reread of The Name of the Wind. The last and only time I read it was when it first came out before I knew how popular it would become. Hopefully it lives up to my positive memory and it's hype. And I'm still working through Reaper's Gale.

LOL! I figured over the holidays that if I keep up my average yearly read volume, I'm going to have to start my longevity treatments to finish all the books I have piled around the house....

message 3705: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I know. I used to hope God would alloy me to live till I finished my books...but that's probably not reasonable as I keep adding to them.

message 3706: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I've managed to keep my to-read pile under 130... I'm valiantly trying to get it below than 120, but new book releases constantly defeat me.

message 3707: by [deleted user] (new)

My TBR is sitting at 262 right now.

That's after having culled it a couple weeks ago.

I don't think I'll see below 50 ever again.

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Traci wrote: "My have to reads are sequels to books and authors I love. Some recommendations. My want to reads are random books that I'll probably never get to."

Exactly ... my 'want to' list consists of books or authors I haven't read before but the synopsis sounds intriguing. I have to admit that the 'sample' option on the Kindle books has been of assistance with this ... if I don't really, really want to know what comes next, it doesn't go on the 'want to' list.

message 3709: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments Just finished Brandon Sanderson's Warbreaker. Pretty enjoyable, for the most part. Now, I thought I'd try something a little more light-hearted and fun with Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George.

message 3710: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Audibile.com had Fool Moonunabridged for $4.95 and they download to my kindle/kindle Fire so I picked it up for road reading this week.

message 3711: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 61 comments I just finished Neuromancer. Now I can focus on 11/22/63.

How does one 'cull' a TBR pile? I may have forgotten why I got a specific book, but there was a good reason. I cannot imagine getting rid of something without trying to read it 1st.

Mine TBR has grown so large, I have trouble finding a specific book without hiring a crew to move things around ;-) It's at over 700, mostly hardcovers, and not counting Kindle or iPad books which remain out of site and out of mind.

I put books that I've already read on my TBR - so sometimes I admit I'm not going to re-read them anytime soon so I can see what I actually haven't had a chance to read...

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) My TBR is more virtual than not, but I've put books on my may-read list which, after a few months, I can't remember what interested me about them and removed them from the list. Thus, culled.

I've also bought multiple books of a series before, usually during sales, and then didn't like the first book in the series so ditched the rest.

And now I keep thinking of Sean Bean saying "One does not simply cull the TBR pile... "

message 3715: by Traci (new)

Traci Sometimes I add more than one book by an untried author and then discover I didn't like them. Or sometimes I find a book I love in a subgenre I usually don't go for and after trying a few more realize it actually isn't for me.

Anyway, today I hope to finish The Name of the Wind and will continue straight through to The Wise Man's Fear. I like the first even more than when I read it before. I'm hoping to like the second more than my last attempt.

message 3716: by [deleted user] (new)

If I can't remember why I put a book on my the and it doesn't look interesting anymore, it gets culled.

message 3717: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 61 comments Ala wrote: "If I can't remember why I put a book on my the and it doesn't look interesting anymore, it. gets culled."

Same here. Sometimes I put things on my TBR pile because it's a group read and then i find out others hated the book, if i was only reading it for the group to begin with, i'll cull it. Then there are the books i have no idea why i added them, i'll cull them if they don't look interesting to me any longer, as long as i don't physically own them.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments My list is too long for everyone to make it.

message 3720: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) I just started Mistborn: The Final Empire. I don't know what the hell took me so long to decide to read it.
Now that Nanowrimo is over(ish), I can plant my ass on the couch and read through the series.
If I can keep myself away from goodreads long enough, that is.

message 3721: by Terry (new)

Terry Simpson | 261 comments Started Mistborn

message 3722: by Scarlet (new)

Scarlet I'm reading The Demon King it's good but kind of boring compared to the really epic books I've been reading lately.

message 3723: by Marina (new)

Marina Fontaine (marina_fontaine) | 175 comments Started Shadow's Edge by Brent Weeks today. These books are too engaging- they are beginning to interfere with my life.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I'm reading No Hero by Jonathan Wood , and I'm liking it a lot.

message 3725: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Right I going to start on today, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami.

message 3726: by Traci (new)

Traci I've started Revan. Been looking forward to it but I don't know why. Basically it's like fanfiction. And anyway this Revan in no way matches mine..... When will I stop buying Star Wars books?

Tell me how that goes, it sounded interesting.

message 3728: by Dana (new)

Dana | 140 comments Just finished up the Sarantine Mosaic, and I'm starting The Summer Tree. I've heard that Fionavar is a bit different from his other books, so I hope I like it as much as the others I've read.

message 3729: by [deleted user] (new)

@Traci you gotta actively break that addiction, it's the only way. Took me forever :P

@Dana Fionavar is very different, and may come off dated and cliched. It's good, just not on the level of his other works. Just my opinion, of course.

I saw that one of the characters is named Paul Schafer and I had to laugh. I'm going to be picturing the guy from Letterman every time I see his name..

message 3731: by Traci (new)

Traci @Michael, Revan is one of my favorite characters from the Star Wars universe too, but my Revan from KOTOR. Hated KOTOR 2 btw.

message 3732: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Reading several. Well into Event, the jury's still out a bit on it. Well into Live Free or Die and it's fantastic so far. Have a couple more library books clamoring to be read.

message 3733: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments I'm reading several, too. Mainly, 'Salem's Lot: Illustrated Edition and Night of the Assholes.

You must have got the month confused with when the T.V. show came out because it was on Tuesday, July 12th, 2011 that A Dance with Dragons came out.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) *rolls eyes dramatically*

I was in the dungeon. Der.

It's actually pretty funny, too. So far, anyway.

message 3742: by Kara (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 143 comments Still finishing Prince of Thorns... lol. This seems to be one you have to stick it out for. If I had given up and shelved this one early, I would still have a bitter taste in my mouth. However, having made it through Chapter 35 and onward, my feelings have changed, and I don't hate Jorg quite so much anymore. Still undecided overall... ~ 90 pages left.

Also about half-way through Of Blood and Honey, which I have been loving. Just set it aside for a bit while I made a strong willed determination & effort to finish Prince of Thorns.

message 3743: by Viv (new)

Viv JM I am reading Of Blood and Honey too - I think it's a really interesting setting and I like the main character, Liam.

I gave up on The Steel Remains, it was just a bit too dark and brutal for me after all. I never realised I was such a wuss.

I actually just finished Steel Remains. I liked it, but not as well as The First Law series, which I saw it compared to.

LOL I 've always known I'm a wuss. If a book is dark or brutal I simply cannot read it

J. Bush (jwesleybush) | 2 comments The Passage was intense. I'm rereading George R.R. Martin's Dance of Dragons. I'm working on my own fantasy series, and am learning all I can from the master.

message 3747: by Traci (new)

Traci Finished Revan...and now I'm in a bad mood. I think I should take Ala's advice and just stop reading Star Wars expanded universe *cough* fanfiction.

I think I'll start Hogfather later. If Pratchett can't put me in a better mood nothing can.

message 3748: by Damali (new)

Damali I'm also reading Mistborn. I don't like Sanderson's style, but I'm going to finish the first book.

I *loved* The Passage. I need to reread that soon.

It's been a while since I read the series but I actually liked Fionavar best out of the books of his that I have read.

message 3750: by [deleted user] (new)

It's really for the best that way, Traci :P
