I hate when that happens.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Not real fun. But it's a very good book. I recommend it. The author narrates it.

I read it at home. No embarrassment crying. No one to witness. :) (view spoiler)

I read [book:The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters
last year, and though it was a bit hard to get into, by the second half I was really liking it, and it's one I'm glad I finished :)

Brett (battlinjack) | 114 comments I have Debris - The Veiled Worlds by Jo Anderton to read now. It's the first of a trilogy. It is one of those books that crosses the genres. As I see it , it is Fantasy, Steampunk and Science Fiction all rolled up together. Of course the farther into it I get, I may change my mind on that.

This is yet another book from Angry Robot Publishers. I find that I rarely dislike anything they publish. They are coming out with so many newer writers and I especially like the little details they put into the covers. The back cover has a little block suggesting which genre to file it as and a spot of 'If you like this, try these'.

In one of the groups we were talking about covers and whether or not they influenced how you bought books. I really like the covers from Angry Robot. They are well designed from a graphic design viewpoint and they artwork is relevant and often quite novel!

Sorry, went off on a tangent...again!

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments I need to check out more books from Angry Robot - Zoo City was great, and like you said, had fantastic cover art. I loved how specific to the story it was!

Kit★ wrote: "I read The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters last year, and though it was a bit hard to get into, by the second half I was really liking it, and it's one I'm glad I finished :)"

Cool! It's kind of slow so far, but now the main characters are coming together. :) I'm looking forward to seeing where this'll go.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) 'Glass Books of the Dream Eaters' was a weird one for me.

On one hand, I found the world and the concepts and the story in general to be fascinating. I really liked the characters, and some of the story really haunted me - it stuck with me and, in some ways, I would call it one of my best reads of last year. I still find myself thinking about it from time to time - and there's not a lot of books I can really say that about.

On the other hand, the writing style really bogged me down. I hated - HATED - the way sections would be written from one character's perspective, and then the next section would be the same time period from a different character's perspective. There were times when we would see a scene and then, 70 pages later, go back and see the same scene from a different character's perspective. And this happened multiple times.

I thought it could've been written much more intertwined and would've ended up flowing just so much better.

And some of the descriptions and things were just, ugh.

I ended up giving it only 3-stars - but it's more like the story is 4-stars and the writing is 2-stars.

S Pearlyan (purplewidow) | 84 comments Finally Uni exam is over, so I'm back to reading wagon. Started with Golden Fool. Also reading Riftwar on my phone. And have few others lined up after Hobb. It's going to be interesting next few weeks

message 3561: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I finished The Alloy of Law, which was very disappointing, he still has a really cool magic system. Now on to Inheritance.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) That sounds a bit confusing to me, Colleen. Thanks for the warning.

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) | 338 comments Almost done with Dead Beat. I'm at the (view spoiler) scene. Almost made me late to work today since I wanted to try to finish!

Also finished Nightlife. It wasn't too bad, but the ending fell flat for me. I will read the next book though since the summary sounds cool.

carol. | 2616 comments Dead Beat was the best, especially that spoiler scene. :D You could tell he had fun with that one. Nightliffe is hard--there's parts I like and parts of the series I don't like. The latest book rejuvenated it for me.

So the series is worth a read?

The wife got me a Kindle for our anniversary, and Dead Beat was the first book I bought for it.

message 3567: by Viv (new)

Viv JM I finished City of Bones and am just getting started on NK Jemisin's The Kingdom of Gods. Only read the first chapter so far but already totally hooked.

carol. | 2616 comments Chelsea wrote: "So the series is worth a read?" Overall, I'd say, "yes." It's one of the more unusual urban fantasy books and it's generally very well written. Rob doesn't necessarily believe in the happy ending, though, and the Cal's issues continue to be a struggle through the first 4 or so books--bordering on repetitive. Character building is fascinating. I think my problem was partially with likeability--with no necessarily happy endings, you want to at least root for the mains. She took a turn with Roadkill (har-har) and I enjoyed that one quite a bit more. The last was close to fantastic. Really need to do my review. :) Thanks for starting me on some thoughts.

message 3571: by Traci (new)

Traci Been trying to read the series I'm currently on without a break and without the distraction of a second book...but too many new releases have broken my willpower. I start The Alloy of Law today. :D

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I liked Blackbringer, Shannon.

I finished Retribution Falls and it was very good. I will probably start the sequel, The Black Lung Captain this week sometime as well.

I found Retribution falls a decent, entertaining story, but the Black Lung Captain completely overtakes it on every front. So you're in for a treat :)

Awesome! I wanted to like Retribution Falls more than I did. I just felt it could have been better but I had a hard time putting my finger on it. I am glad to hear the sequel is better.

message 3575: by Traci (new)

Traci I really liked the first one, alot, so I guess I should bump Black Lung Captain up on my tbr list. :)

message 3576: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I just finished Butcher's Death Masks and I loved it. Now I am reading Koontz Cold Fire. I had never read this one before and its pretty good so far.

Mach | 572 comments I would say go for The Two Towers but The Warrior Prophet is good too. Gardens of the Moon was just mediocre in my opinion.

message 3579: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 114 comments Of those choices I would go with The Two Towers also. The other 2 just didn't do it for me.

message 3580: by [deleted user] (new)

Both Black Lung Captain and The Iron Jackal are better than Retribution Falls.

Love this series.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I recently bought 'Black Lung Captain', but I'm not sure when I'll get to actually reading it. Hopefully soonish (i.e. before February).

message 3582: by Traci (new)

Traci My soonish tends to go from within two months to six to a year, I'm so bad at continuing series...

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) That's about right for me, but I can actually be years. I'm always behind on series/books.

message 3584: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I am very much looking forward to starting The Waste Lands...and getting further into 11/22/63, of course!!

Ohh, excited. I saw there was a sort of follow-up to Enchantment. So you enjoyed?

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Carol wrote: "Ohh, excited. I saw there was a sort of follow-up to Enchantment. So you enjoyed? ..."

If anything, I liked it even better than Enchantment. The author went on with the Gale family saga with Charlie, Alysha's musical sister and Jack, the dragon/Gale wizard as a mouthy teenager (who is a riot). It worked well and I don't think she could have gone on with Alysha and Graham in a 'new' story as effectively.

message 3589: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments It's been a while since I've been here. Books I've read since I was last here: Black & Orange, Neuromancer, The Handmaid's Tale, Leaving Van Gogh: A Novel, In Other Worlds: SF and the Human Imagination, From Eternity to Here: The Quest for the Ultimate Theory of Time, and 11/22/63.

My review for 11/22/63: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Currently reading: 1Q84. Really good so far. If you like Murakami, you'll like this book.

Traci Started Neverwinter. I like the older Drizzt books but have been disappointed in the last few and now with this one...it might be my last.

Read and finished Infinity Blade: Awakening a novella by Brandon Sanderson. Didn't expect much from it but liked it.

That is what all the reviews I had read on here have said about Neverwinter. The main problem with that is many feel that the character of Drizzt is growing old, not really changed or grown at all in the book, but I feel like Dahlia makes up for it. She is the one that is trying to change Drizzt. But mostly I love the Drizzt books is because I always like to learn something from it, which I have from the interactions between Dahlia and Drizzt.

message 3592: by Traci (new)

Traci My problem is Dahlia. I can't stand her. (view spoiler)

Traci I'm going through another reread of The Eye of the World, after a failed attempt earlier in the year. As I suspected it was just I wasn't in the mood because I'm enjoying it this time.

message 3595: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments The Eye of the World is not the most exciting book in the series, things get more interesting in the second book.

message 3596: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited Nov 18, 2011 07:36AM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I started Black Lung Captain, and it flows much better. I'm loving it so far. I was at the gym and I laughed out loud on several scenes and got some weird looks. That's one of my acid tests for a good book.

I'm also listening to Neverwhere on audio. Very good.
