Just started rereading The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko with translation by Andrew Bromfield.

How's the book compared to the movie? I keep meaning to read it but haven't gotten to yet.
The movie is surrealistic. I'm wondering how the book would be compared to the surrealism of the movie.
I've often wondered the same. I have the book and I want to read it, but like so many others, it just sits there, waiting. LOL
Oh, if only we could just press a book to our forehead, and have it be read!
That would be awesome! I could then catch up on all the books I want to read.
I read Perfume a while ago, and I found the concept much more interesting than the actual book. I know a lot of people loved it, but it didn't work for me. Maybe something gets lost in translation, but I thought it was a little boring and not particularly memorable.Currently reading Storm Front. Just started, but liking it so far.
A Goodreads friend of mine kept on telling me that I really need to read Perfume. I was getting all excited about it. Now you're saying it's boring. On the other hand, she reads a lot of books nobody wants to read. I need to think about that...
I'm in the middle of reading
in eBook. It's really good so far, a modern take on the wicked witch and children. It has gruesomeness but in more of a creepy way than a violent way. Got through 10 hrs. of 45 hrs. of the audio of
. It's not my kind of book to be going through 45 hrs. worth. It has wonderful storytelling and narration, but I get bored with the style of writing that feeds you without you having to think too much. Maybe it's because of my art background, but I prefer a Gestalt kind of writing. The writer has symbolic or potent words, and my mind fills in the blank with a bunch of my own information. . I highly recommend this book for those who like an exciting, descriptive read. It's full of economic and political intrigue with the setting being Asia. Although there are sci-fi elements, the story is squarely has present day Asia feel. I can see Asia through the author's eyes. It's obvious he's been there. His descriptions are very accurate based on my memory of Asia.
Reading The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy, almost finished with #2 The Wandering Fire and will start #3 The Darkest Road probably tomorrow. I read the first of the trilogy, The Summer Tree, in our group read and it was fantastic. I wanted to continue with the story.

I am putting aside
for now. What bothers me about it is that it reads like it's a movie script. It's not like his earlier work such as 1974's Carrie. 1986's It came out after he became famous and had several movies under his belt. And it reads like a movie script, with the words painting the action and little details as if helping the movie director better build the movie. Carrie, on the other hand, flashed from story to interviews, etc., more of a conceptual writer's format, and less like a script. I can tolerate a book that reads like a script if it's not overly long. But why would I want to read a book like that when I can just watch the movie, if the book has a movie based on the book. I'm a big movie buff, and if the book doesn't offer me more than the movie, I'd rather watch the movie. This book is not that intellectually stimulating. It is just a typical horror story with grisly events and things jumping out at you, as far as I can see 11 hrs. into this 45 hrs. audio.I am continuing with
, a much more interesting book that makes me think about genetic manipulation, the economic advantages/disadvantages of that, and the moral and legal consequences.

I liked that book, too, Lady Danielle. I read it two or three years ago, and I still haven't continued with the series for some reason.Well, one reason is that my dog ate the second book about a year ago, when he was still a snivelling puppy, and I have yet to go and buy it again...LOL
I don't want to invest any more time into that series, as bad as it sounds. What is it with pets? My cat is trying to drive me batty!
I have a cat like that, too. A kitten and a puppy...uhg...I think I'd rather have kids. LOL

Ooh, that's a great excuse. I could tell Maciek that I couldn't continue with It because my dog ate the book. I won't mention that I have no dog and that It is a digital audio.
LOL You could say that your nonexistent dog ate the device of which you were listening to It.
But he'll get suspicious when I immediately listen to the next audiobook. I solved the problem. I told Maciek that I ate the dog that ate the book. Eliminate the evidence, eliminate the crime.

I'm currently working on the first collection of The House of Secrets and will follow that up with the 2nd but I have a small stack of books from the library that are more fantasy oriented I thought I'd ask you guys about. Have any of you read Benighted by Kit Whitfield? Randomly picked it up along with Gregory Maguire's Wicked and John Connolly's Book of Lost Things. I've heard good things about the other two but nothing much about Benighted.

Right now I'm reading Agents of Light and Darkness, the second book in Simon R. Green's Nightside series. So far, it is a lot of fun.
A Game of ThronesLoving it. I've been fortunate to have the last 5 books I've read to be of higher caliber than most. Outstanding.
Jason, how is Agents? I read the first Nightside and liked it.
So far Agents is better than the first, of which I also liked. The series is a really dark but fun ride, so far.
Jason, that is a crazy book!
I'm working on Wicked now. The only other Gregory Maguire book I've read was Lost which had a huge tonal difference in comparison to this book. I liked that one but I really LOVE Wicked! There are so many nuances to the characters and the overall plot even now at only about 183 pages.

Another one I have to get. I promised my husband I'd thin down my 200+ books before I buy any more. Yeah, like that'll ever happen, LOL I'm already writing a list for the next book sale, haha

If Todd ever asked me to get rid of mine I'd give him the look of doom and we'd hit a bookstore :) Much luck on thwarting the plot against your books! Haha I have more than a thousand myself:)
I choose to give most away after reading, most aren't worth a re-read anyway. He just means to read some of what I have before buying more. 'In theory' I agree, but 'in practice' is a whole other story, LOL
I have a book accumulation problem too. I've probably got somewhere between 200 to 400 books in my TBR pile at home, in both e-book format and physical form. Although I know it makes no sense in buying more books, I can't stop myself. There's so many friggin books I want to read.

I think I have at least 1/3 of the books i own yet to read yet. I've had some of them for as many as 10 years...and yet i still get more and get books from the library instead if reading what i have...hmmmm yep better read more of what I own.
Amanda, Jason, we should make a pact together, (and anyone else who wants to join in), like read X number of books we own this month . Even if it's one or two and we report to each other, it'll help thin down our shelves so we can Buy More Books!I only suggest it because I seem to do better when I have motivation.

OK, first thing we need to do is decide on a goal, how many books, or does that even matter?
I can read about four books a month. More if the books are shorter. One of the books I hope to read, though, is pretty thick. I can cram in some more, though, so anywhere between two and four works for me.
I'm in the middle of A Game of Thrones, one from my collection (yay). I injured my neck so I can't spent as much time reading as I'd like, but I'd say another week and I should be done. After that, I can do the same 4 shorties or 2 longs.Do you think we should make another thread so we can report what books we're reading that we own? And a place to confess our book buying binges, LOL

About Night Watch: I read it and Day Watch too. I didn't think it was that great, considering how my friends raved about it. It started out really good but fizzled out, the whole point of the Night Watch, or Day Watch was stupid and makes no sense. I rented the movie a short time later and it sucked so bad I couldn't even finish it.

I'm rereading my Dresden books (I'm not sure how many times this makes LOL) and have a few library books out (and a couple more arriving). I think I'll get a few books for Christmas also... Oh well. I think I plan to read more of my own books in 2011 and cut back a bit on the reading groups. Of course I've planned to do that before.
