I'm finishing Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void, which I wasn't sure I'd like, as I'm not a space geek. It's surprised me though. Lots of interesting background into the astronaut program, and a ton of sly asides to keep me laughing.

Finished Mistborn: The Final Empire last night - I liked it a lot and hope to obtain the second book soon. I'm now in the middle of Graveminder. Not sure what's up next, but if I had any sense I'd force myself to start with that bag of used books I picked up last month. :P

Colleen, I really liked The Chronicles of Chrestomanci: Volume I. Dogsbody was a little different, but, since it involved a story from a dog's perspective, I just had to read it and, for the most part, I enjoyed it. There were a few parts that were a little slow and confusing, but there were also a lot of funny, heartwarming parts as well.

Dune just has a richness that never goes out of date...it really is timeless I feel. I read it 30 years ago and I still sometimes find myself reciting "Fear is the mindkiller"

I'm now reading a strange little old SF Rogue Moon by an author I don't remember having heard of Algis Budrys. It's the kind of book I won't know if I like until the end, I think.

I'm also trying to figure out how to review Stormed Fortress which I am finding difficult beyond finding new adjectives to use for saying I much I enjoyed The Alliance of Light.

So I finished The Summer Tree last night, and it wasn't as good as I'd thought it would be.

But now I'm stuck and will forgo my BotM reads to finish out the Fionavar Tapestry.

I just keep seeing things in the work that bug me or remind me of something else, which then bugs me.

The foreshadowing was almost unbearable, and that damned scene (view spoiler)[when they all declare to go to war reminded me of the whole "...and my axe!" line from LotR. (hide spoiler)] Only not in a good, or comical, way.

Also, (view spoiler)[the way Dave goes from mild-mannered law student to Conan the Barbarian in the span of a few days, as well as the rest of them simply accepting the notion of traveling to another world so non-chalantly is slowly eating away at the back of mind.

And there's a voice in the back of my head, neighboring the part of my brain that's currently being nibbled away, which is wondering relentlessly why these mofos haven't advanced technologically whatsoever. Hell, they could steal technology from other worlds they traveled to! ugh. (hide spoiler)]

I'm still working my way through Assassin's Apprentice and a few other books.

Finally got "Assassin's Apprentice" in the mail and am nearly finished with it.

I do agree with everyone who said that it was a better book to introduce the author than "Shaman's Crossing" but I also have to stand by my first, and second, feeling about Robin Hobb. I just simply don't think she is going to be one of my favorite authors.

Both books illustrate one of my basic complaints about so many series. I have the feeling publishers ask/require that authors produce 400-word epics, which is all well and good but the story lines simply do not hold up. Consequently, the author has to include details that aren't necessary until I have the feeling I'm reading a diary/journal written by someone who has promised themselves they will write at least two paragraphs for every single day, whether anything really happened or not!

Actually, in both of these books, I liked the characters but by halfway through the book I would be reading still another page and thinking "So when is something going to happen? I don't CARE what you have for breakfast. I don't CARE you got in trouble and had to go without supper. I don't CARE if you didn't get the horse groomed right. So what? DO SOMETHING, even if it's wrong!"

I have read at least one of the books she wrote as Megan Lindholm, "Cloven Hooves". It's been many years ago and I don't remember it all that well, though do remember it having a "feel" something like some of the de Lint books.

I devoured The Native Star the first day of June. Loved it. Will order the next in the series shortly.

Currently finishing up Spy Glass, to complete the Glass series, and listening to Changeless during my commute. (Both these books got thrown to the side while I read The Native Star).

Then... I'm not sure. I'm supposed to be reading Daughter of the Empire for the FBCS group read, but I still haven't finished A Darkness at Sethanon, and I'm not sure I'm going to.

Sucks also to buy a book you don't remember reading until you're a little ways in, and either rembering the end, or that the book turns hyper sucky, which could be why you have blocked it from memory. I buy used books, but still, five or so bucks is five or so bucks. I could kick-start my brain and keep lists of what I've read...

That "i'vereadthisbefore" feeling is one of the reasons I started doing reviews on GR--so I remember what I've read and what I've thought about it. Nothing worse than getting a third of the way into a book and not only realizing that I disliked it, but that I've read it before. How embarrassing!

I've just run out of space, so now I don't buy until I know I really like the book and it's a re-read, or it's an autobuy author. But I have the benefit of a lovely library system.
