Sara | 60 comments This is probably the wrong folder for this but I'm going to start reading The Ancient soon. This is my first try at R.A. Salvatore. I found this book at my favorite used bookstore. But I'm not sure if I should read another book before I start this one. I'm not sure where this is in the series. Any help or suggestions would be great.

Brett (battlinjack) | 114 comments i haven't been reading much pure fantasy for a while, urban fantasy yes, along with sci-fi, horror and thrillers. I seem to be having a hard time getting into the fantasy worlds now and in a while i will be reading just it I'm sure.
The last pure (swords and sorcery) fantasy novel i read was The Black Company by Glen Cook and that was a reread for the umpteenth time.
Otherwise I have just finished rereading and reading the entire Dresden series by Jim Butcher and the same for the Nightside series by Simon Green. Both of which are fabulous, each and every novel.

I'm a huge Salvatore fan as many who knows me, and I would recommend you to not to read The Ancient as I see it all the time in bargain bins, as it is first not the first in book in the Saga of the First King, but The Highwayman actually is. Second, I would actually recommend you to read the The Crystal Shard instead as this is one of top books of all time, even though this is book four in his Legend of Drizzt first. The reason is most people don't read other books then his Drizzt series, which is what he is known for because as I also feel the main character in all his other books are trying to be Drizzt. Second, The Crystal Shard was actually the first book he wrote, and because of that the character of Drizzt is quite different than in the first book. I'm more of a publication date rather than chronological order because it tracks though a writer's level of progression.

Gianluca (gianlucag) I'm currently reading A Memory of Light, book 14 of The Wheel of Time. I don't want this series to end.

No, I haven't seen the movie yet, i just didn't want to watch it before reading the book. But i've seen the trailer and thought it was amazing.

I've actually read the Lord of the Rings trilogy 6-7 years ago, but hadn't bothered to read the Hobbit for some reason unknown to even myself.

Can I suggest you see the movie first? The upset some people feel when the movie departs from the book's plot is something else! You might enjoy the movie more if you're not comparing them, lol.

Thanks for the help Kevin. I'm always trying to find authors I haven't read yet but I seem to have trouble finding a good starting point. I try to support my local used book store as much as I possibly can then use amazon to fill in the holes.

message 5458: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António | 25 comments Just finished Sharp Objects and my overall feeling is that I was given a bag of sweets, and upon opening it, found none. It has a lot of potential, but never fully lives up to it, which is a shame as it could've been excellent in a multitude of ways. Feel free to read my full review here.

Just started The Last Colony, which I'm quite excited about as I loved the first two books in the series.

message 5459: by Arthur (new)

Arthur Pindragon I finished the Doctor Who novel I was reading. Terry Pratchett's Dodger is next, alongside Rowling's Chamber of secrets.

message 5460: by Pedro (last edited Jan 22, 2013 11:12AM) (new)

Pedro António | 25 comments Finished The Last Colony and I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as the first two. I can't quite point out why (and that really bugs me), but after the whole getting the colony running it really didn't keep me as compelled though the ending was - thankfully - quite satisfying. You can read my full review here.

After putting it off for way longer than I probably should've, going to read The Blade Itself next.

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) | 197 comments Finished THE BLACK OPERA and posted a review. A good but flawed work.

message 5462: by Jonesmikey (new)

Jonesmikey | 110 comments Just finished Shadow Puppets. That's it for that line. All I have left is Xenocide, and I haven't really heard anything good about it. Then again, I heard a lot of naysaying towards the Shadow series and I liked them a lot. Almost more than Ender's Game itself.

Tony | 32 comments Smashing out books lately isn't a bit of time on your hands a wonderful thing
Terry pratchett - monstrous regiment was great as always
Prince of thorns - mark Lawrence was good too

The second book in the dragons path kings blood? I think -Daniel Abraham was pretty cool as well

Natalia (small_god) I just finished Legion Legion by Brandon Sanderson , I generally avoid short stories but this one is pretty good.

message 5470: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah I started The Winter Oak by James A. Hetley which is the sequel to The Summer Country
however I still keep thinking about Among Others...

message 5471: by Michele (new)

Michele | 74 comments I have re-read two books in preparation for reading sequels: The Black Prism and Finnikin of the Rock. About to start Froi of the Exiles and The Blinding Knife. I also finished a children's trilogy on audio which I really liked: The Amulet of Samarkand--The Golem's Eye--Ptolemy's Gate. I liked it more than I thought I would, especially by the last book. The ending surprised me.

message 5472: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I am currently reading Mark J. Ferrari's The Book of Joby and John Scalzi's Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas (having a lot of fun with this one) =)

Pedro António | 25 comments Just finished The Blade Itself and despite its few flaws I really enjoyed it. The battle scenes in particular were absolutely amazing and I'm definitely picking up Before They Are Hanged as soon as possible. Feel free to read my review by clicking here.

Going to read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy next. (shame on me for not having read it before!)

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Just stumbled on Oath of Swordsthanks to a free download. Classic swords and sorcery fantasy but very well done, with interesting characters. Not sure how I managed to completely miss this David Weber series, though maybe it's a good thing since there are four books in the series and they were written 4, 6 and 8 years apart respectively, which would have annoyed me if I had been trying to read them as they were coming out.

Fortunately for my disposition, the second will be arriving shortly from PaperbackSwap and my library has the last two, which will complete the series.

message 5481: by Maarit (last edited Feb 02, 2013 09:20AM) (new)

Maarit I'm currently reading Looking for Jake and Other Stories, Paikka vapaana (Casual Vacancy, Finnish translation), Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey (in Finnish) and some Marvel comics. Finally something new, it took me ages to read my previous books, though I still haven't finished the Quantum Thief or Kushiel's Dart, but I'm getting there with those two.

I liked it too. I took a little to get into but really keeps you glued to the story. I almost went directly to the next book.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I am currently reading Artemis Fowl based on the rec of a "friend". I put friend in quotes because, surely, a true friend would not lead me so terribly astray...

How do you like it? My son tried it after Percy Jackson and found it boring. I tried too but did not like it much. Felt kind of bad about it because it seems like I should have liked it!

Well, I'm not very far in yet, but... I'm not digging it. The writing is just so blah, and there's nothing about the story that's grabbed me yet.

message 5496: by Jalilah (last edited Feb 07, 2013 09:32AM) (new)

Jalilah I am currently re-reading Bear Daughter by Judith Berman by Judith Berman and enjoying it just as much, if not more the second time around. There are so many details! Despite the misleading cover, the novel is neither YA or authentic Native American. Berman is an anthropologist and she combines mythology of both indigenous traditions of the Pacific North West and Europe to create a new story which takes place in an alternative universe resembling the Pre-Colombian Pacific West Coast. The feeling is more like Epic Fantasy.

message 5497: by Scott (new)

Scott | 165 comments I finished Night Shift. I really enjoyed some of the stories. "One for the Road" really made me want to reread 'Salem's Lot.

I think that I'm going to read The Dragon Factory next.
