What Are You Currently Reading?
just started Stormwalker by Allyson James. I tried to start Thomas the Rhymer but could not get into it. I am more in the mood to read something that takes place in the contemporary world and not medieval England. Sometimes the reverse is true. Once I stayed in the 19th century for about a year. Anyone else like that?
About a third of the way through
Classic "swords and dragon" plot but the characters really hooked me in quickly.
A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Pretty dry writing style, but one I've always wanted to read but never got around to.
Started and finished The Killing Moon in one day. It's that good. Highly recommend it for fantasy fans looking for something unusual.
Just sent to the library for it Carol, looked interesting.I'm readingDead Six
and
The High King's Tomb.
It'll be interesting to see what you think, Mike. I see you are on the 3rd Green Rider book. I just bumped up the first in my TBR list.
I like them. This one seems to be a bit heavier on the love stories, (and you probably remember how much I "love romance", LOL) but not enough to ruin the story for me. I have the forth on my shelf. I've had these for a long time and am just now getting to the third. So far I like the series.
I'm going to work on The Death of teh Necromancer a little more.Also...I need someone to stop me from following Ilona Andrews blog. I don't follow any writer blogs (i like the distance) but Ilona Andrews feels like the first time I met Mercedes Lackey. True Love.
I finished Seed last week. I really enjoyed it.Then I started The Black Dahlia. I like the beginning but I didn't get much read over the weekend.
Jalilah wrote: "I tried to start Thomas the Rhymer but could not get into it...."I was extremely disappointed with Thomas the Rhymer, and did not finish it. Slow story, and dull besides. Quite a feat, really, to take a legend and two characters so imbued with interest and make them so plodding. I found the characters' voices unconvincing, too.
I started to read Iron Council last week and so far I've almost read 200 pages of it (gotta love trains, where you've nothing else to do besides reading). And yesterday I started Sputnik - rakastettuni (Sputnik Sweetheart, Finnish version).
Stuff piling up... Got The Innocent Mage from the library. Have to finish that before The High King's Tomb. Also got a used copy of the firet (old) Destroyer book. A nostalgia read.

Right? No help from me. She/they are so human and accessible, but funny as well. Love her blog.

Good to know I am not the only one Donna! I was wondering if it is just because I have been reading a lot of Urban Fantasy series lately, but I don’t think that is the case because I’ve also enjoyed other books.
Yikes! I just picked up War of the Flowers today from the library and it looks so long! After all the things I’ve been reading about it in the discussions in this group I don’t know if this is what I want either!
Dang. I feel bad, lol. It's not the best - for my personal tastes - but I hate that I might have made you uninterested.
I blame Kevin. He picked this book - and then didn't read it or participate in the discussion.

Hey, at least I got further than you did.
Just finished Elantris and freaking loved it. It was a great start to my two week reading break due to the Olympics. Picked up The Black Lung Captainthanks to a random number generator. Pretty good so far, but there have been quite a few books between the first one and this one so it has been a bit harder than usual to get into it. Things are staring to come back to me though :D
The Black Lung Captain was hard for me to get into too. I loved the first one, but the time between was pretty long for me, and I thought it didn't do the best job of jogging your memory.

I'm quite sad that The War of the Flowers isn't going down so well. I love that book so much. But reading your comments I can see the problems; but I do think it's a worthwhile read.
A matter of taste. I like his fist trilogy (unless you read it in paperback form then the third book was published as 2 books), but it isn't eveyone's cup of tea. It's good when we find books we love and sometimes baffling when others can't see what we do.I've been there.

"I can say the book is well written...but I'm a horrible wussy. I hate to cry a lot and/or be depressed.
I've avoided GRRM, Scott Lynch, the prince of thorns, won't read the rest of the Demon cycle by Peter Brett (well, that was more about rape, but still). Oh! And I DNF'd The Name of the Wind when I realized that I'd been crying for like 5 chapters straight.
huh, I DNF'd Kay's Fionavr (sp?) series, too.
Traci wrote: "The Black Lung Captain was hard for me to get into too. I normally don't like it when a book recaps too extremely, but I would have appreciated some small reference to past happenings before I hit the 150 page mark. I've finally hit the point where I have a good refresher of what happened in the first book so things should be smooth sailing from now on.
Jalilah wrote: "after trying to decide between The War of the Flowers and Thomas the Rhymer I chose Grave Peril!"Good solid choice!
Just finished
... probably 4 or 5 star read for me, great characters with interesting interaction of the mundane world with modern fey ... until I got to the cliffhanger ending.I have a long established aversion to cliffhanger endings and I've been finding more and more of them in the first book of a projected series by indie authors, particularly, it seems.
I'm just about at the point with this where I'm going to start a list of series/authors in a "never again read" category.

Yes you can never go wrong with Dresden Files! I still might try the War of the Flowers.......
To be honest I am finding Grave Peril to be quite a downer. None of the usual humor is in it that balances all the dark stuff that happens. I am about half way through and find it very depressing. I don’t know if I’ll even continue this series after this book.
Jalilah wrote: "To be honest I am finding Grave Peril to be quite a downer. None of the usual humor is in it that balances all the dark stuff that happens. I am about half way through and find it very depressing. ..."Really??
I haven't gotten that far but *sad.*
Grave Peril is heavy compared to the earlier books, but it sets up the action for a lot that happens later...and there is humor in it. (Have you gotten to the party yet?)I won't give any spoilers, but the humor does continue hand in hand with the action. This is the third book and Butcher really hits his stride from here on (my opinion of course).

I agree, (view spoiler)

So thanks so much! :-)

And, I started last week Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. I am having trouble with genre-izing this novel. I may need a new category—historical hard SF. But what else you go in this category?
