What Are You Currently Reading?
I'm reading another Wicked, Lol. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It seems to be either you hate it or love it kind of book. So far I'm neither but it's okay.
I'm currently reading Among Others, which I found randomly walking though the library yesterday, which I never knew the library had. Its a book that has been a lot of talk about it. Also going to read the second Halo book, Halo: The Flood. Then lastly, the last book in the City of Ember series, The Diamond of Darkhold.

I've always intended to finish it as I didn't hate it. my husband liked it

which was a fast, roller coaster ride through an interesting urban landscape and an occasionally irritating teenage witch. It was a free download and I really did enjoy it except for the times I really wanted to slap the teenage witch alongside the head and tell her to shut her mouth!
I'm currently reading The Riyria Revelations (Omnibus Versions) series by Michael J. SullivanThere is a discussion of these in a Fantasy group. Anyone know where it is?

Did you read the night angel trilogy? I really loved it :) If so, ho do they compare?
I felt the book is different from the Night Angel Trilogy in its own way especially it has more explanation, and background stories, but has the same fast pace style of writing.
I have but haven't read it yet. I should get on that. I think I'm just scared that my expectations are too high because of the Night Angel. Thanks :)
Benji, I don't know if Kevin will agree with me or not but I compare The Black Prism to the writings of Brandon Sanderson. If that helps any. I loved it. Loved, loved, loved it. And can't wait for the second book.

which was a free download and listed as 'fantasy romance' which almost put me off the book even as a freebie.I'm delighted to report I would have missed a very entertaining book if I had not tried it. Very little 'romance', and solid fantasy of the swords and sorcery kind with two very interesting characters and an interesting twist on 'this is how we defeat the bad guys and win the war'.
This is still listed as a free download for Kindle on Amazon.
I agree with Mike, Weeks is a lot better than Sanderson because certain selections of Sanderson's work drags way too much with unneeded information that turns people off, Weeks does not do that.
Generally I like Sanderson better but there was just something about The Black Prism that I liked better. So I agree. And disagree. I do need to read The Night Angel books again though so maybe my opinion will change.

Thanks to Jenny & Mike the Paladin just finished Warbreaker today. Really enjoyed the book. Just startedKnife of Dreams today. Hoping O remember enough of the back story and characters to enjoy this one. I started the series about two years ago and am still trying to finish it.Just too many good books mentioned here to keep reading the same series for a prolonged period of time.

Thanks for the tip! Got it!
Speaking of Sanderson, people say that Warbreaker reminds them of The Black Prism because of the magic system in both book involving around colors.

I am also finishing up the Black Company series this month. It is one of my all-time favs. I'm currently in the middle of Water Sleepsbut I'm just not getting the same feel that I had become so accustomed to from this one. Maybe is just my current state of mind or perhaps it's just my impatient mentality of 'alright with the planning already. Can we just go free our guys, get the gang back together, and get on with the hell-raising retribution in true Black Company fashion'.
But I have some reading and reviews to do for some books I won on the GR giveaways. So the Company will have to wait just a little while longer. But I am eager to see how it all plays out and wrap up with Soldiers Live before the end of the month. Downside, I'm really going to miss these guys when the series end.
The Black Company series is fantastic. I have read through about 4 copies of the books. Either by giving them to friends or simply wearing out. Great story.
I am finishing the second book in the Alex Verus series, Cursed, by Benedict Jacks.Well worth reading.
Just started Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis.
The Nazis actually develop psychic warriors in WW2, but they'll never win.
I despise Nazis, but they seem to be appearing in stories lately. I am reading the books because I love to read and to see if the use of Nazis is really necessary in these stories. I don't think so in my opinion, by the stories ARE good.

I hope you go back to the series because the ending in Soldier Lives was amazing, one of the my favorite of all time. What a great way to end the series.
I'm listening to Anansi Boys on audio. It's not my favorite Neil Gaiman but I'm enjoying it. I actually started listening to it several months ago but stopped because it couldn't hold my attention while driving at the time. I'm glad I picked it back up because it's keeping my attention this time. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for some Gaiman.I'm also reading The Iliad for the first time. Really old school fantasy.

You really should read the translation done by Robert Fagles: The Iliad or The Iliad because its the edition many high schools and colleges use. I also read that edition in high school and college.
Daniel wrote: "I need to read the Iliad, tell me if it is any good. "It's great! But it's not like reading a modern novel. It takes work and reader input, but well worth the effort.
Kevin wrote: "You really should read the translation done by Robert Fagles: The Iliad or The Iliad because its the edition many high schools and colleges use. When you think about it, a lot of fantasy fiction based on the Lliad as well as other types of mythology.
Oh man, I tried to read The Illiad and it didn't go well. I love mythology and thought my knowledge in it would help. Yeah. I just don't have the mind for poetry I think. Wish I did.
When I was a kid (that was the '50s and '60s) fantasy wasn't as available. I read mythology along with other things like Aurthur etc. I always liked Norse mythology better than Greek or Roman. It was darker but appealed to me more.
Yeah, all fantasy have common traits from mythology or religion as described in Joseph Campbell's famous book The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
I a teenager i read quite an interesting book called The Mythology Of Tolkien's Middle Earth. I looked at it again recently and it's not really in depth but it does explain out the mythologies that Tolkien drew upon to build middle earth.
I just finished The Devil's Diadem by Sara Douglass. It was awesome. Now I'm gonna start Oath of Fealty by Elizabeth Moon.
I finished the first half of the Lighthouse series Flesh and Spirit by Carol Berg. I jumped right into the second book Breath and Bone, picks up right where the F&S left off. Well written, excellent characters and a great story. What more could I ask for? Berg's got a new fan.
Been a while Patrick. There are some good books of Icelandic Sagas. The Broken Sword is an excellent story based on them. Of course the Bulfinch books cover the basics (along with Greek, Roman, Aurthur and other eras). The books by Elizabeth Boyer can be a little hard to find but are well worth it, they're great. She got frustrated after a few books because they are very faithful to Norse, Icelandic, German and even some Celtic myth and she had some trouble getting them published. I have most of them. I read them first years ago and loved them.If you can find literary references to Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle it's soaked in Norse Mythology.
There are other books out there both historical and modern fiction. Lester del Rey wrote Day of the Giants which is a sort of sci/fi Ragnarok story.
I've read other novels based in them (of course Lord of the Rings has some influence from them despite being a Christian oriented novel). If I think of more I'll try to remember to drop back. I'm sure other members will come up with some to.

I started Something WIcked This Way Comes for another group's read and in memory of Ray Bradbury. I love his word pairing which elicit strange images.
