Purr More (m222) I like the HON series enough to keep reading it, but don't really like the voice of the dialogue. It tries too hard to be teen and hip sounding. Morganville Vampires is a better YA Vampire series IMO.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I agree Michelle. I'm already reading and into HoN so I stick with it, but it's not a well written series at all. And yes, Morganville Vampires is MUCH better.

Erin Harrington (rin4life) | 10 comments I just read Mari Mancusi's Boys that Bite. It was seriously one of the most awful books I've ever read.

The latest Vampire Diaries seemed as though it was a fanfic written by multiple people with the waythe characters changed personalities every five seconds.
I'm technically a young adult and I still can't stomach L.J. Smith.

The Immortals Series by Alyson Noel is seriously awful. I just read the sixth one and I STILL don't know why I keep reading because it only gets progressively worse.

On the upside, I think I might read the Morganville vampires because everyone here keeps raving about it.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I'll agree with the Immortals series being terrible as well. Although I get sad when people think it's the same as Mortal Instruments because MI is actually good.

Morganville's first book is a bit weak, but the series as a whole is really good. If you can overlook the heroine being a pushover in the first book, you're in for a great ride. :)

message 355: by Erin (new)

Erin Harrington (rin4life) | 10 comments I love Mortal Instruments as well! I'm going to read Morganville as soon as a finish the 3rd book of the Chicagoland vampires

message 356: by Scarlet (new)

Scarlet (extraordinarygirl86) | 81 comments I absolutely can't stand the House of Night series. I read about more than half of the first book and found myself hating every single character. The authors of that series amplified the annoying qualities of teenagers to the umpteenth degree to the point that is was just completely unreadable to me.

Vampire Kisses is a pretty bad series as well. The vampire aspect of the series is really poorly done, and the main character is almost more annoying than Bella Swan. For some reason I still continue to read this series though, for reasons I don't even know.

Scarlet, could it be the "car crash" syndrome? You know, while you don't really want to know how bad any particular car crash is, you STILL find yourself looking? Or could it just be that you read them so that you can appreciate a GOOD series more? Sometimes you really need to find and at least try to read a really bad series so that you can properly appreciate the GOOD ones.

Dnt feel Bad I read untill book 4 and couldnt do it anymore.

message 359: by Heather (new)

Heather | 243 comments Ann, good one, like that term and if you don't mind, I might borrow it from time to time. And good point about reading a bad series to appreciate a good one when it comes along..

Scarlet, I started off loving the HON series but now it has become a burden. I will continue to read it since I HAVE to know how it ends and that I wasted this much time, I have to waste more. I know, I know, stupid reasoning but in my head, along with all the other voices it sounds perfectly sane..

I love that series... So do want Rose and Dimitri or Rose and Adrian. I love Rose and Adrian.. I knw :( I suck.

message 361: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 429 comments Heather, I agree with your reasoning about HON. I'm so fed up with how ridiculous it is right now, but I've invested too much time to NOT see it through to the end.

message 362: by Heather (new)

Heather | 243 comments Jennifer, OMG, I'm not alone! Heh-heh! I have a friend who I got into the series with and she feels the same way! I really liked the first two books but after that, it just seemed to get silly.

Patricia, for me, Rose and Dimitri seem perfect for each other, especially with everything they have been through. I like Adrian, but wish he grow up a bit..

message 363: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 429 comments you're definitely not alone! It was great at the beginning, so unique, and now its bordering on ridiculous.

I am so glad I got it for free!

I think you're right about it being the "car crash" syndrome. I definitely don't read Vampire Kisses because I have nothing better to read. I buy like 4 books a month so I have plenty of more thought-out book plots to choose from. I guess I just keep thinking the series will get better, that maybe the author will improve her writing skills with practice. She's 7 books into this series and that hasn't happened yet though lol.

message 369: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 429 comments I'm glad I helped, and while I don't know what Freeway is I hope you enjoy it!

message 370: by Heather (new)

Heather | 243 comments Freeway is a very, very, very dark 'comedy' with Reese Witherspoon and Keifer Sutherland.

message 371: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 429 comments Ah, ok. Well enjoy!

message 372: by Heather (new)

Heather | 243 comments I did and I needed it! I am hoping to finish Eternal Kiss of Darkness tomorrow so I can start Bitter is the next black..

message 373: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (oldbookwormcb) | 4 comments Dancing with Werewolves (Delilah Street; Paranormal Investigator) by Carole Nelson Douglas[book:Dancing With Werewolves her series was so boring and even though I read all three books in the series, I hated them. Traded them in without a second thought!

message 374: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 429 comments Heather, I'm glad you enjoyed it! And bitter is the new black is laugh so hard you cry funny at times!

message 375: by Fabiane (new)

Fabiane Abreu (fabers) For me it's Vampire Kisses, Morganville Vampires, House of Night and Georgina Kincaid.

Vk and HoN I couldn't finish even the first book. MV I read through book 4 until I gave up. And Gerogina I read all the books, only to really, really hate the main character. Definitely regret reading them now.

There are more, but these ones are the ones I remember most.

message 376: by Erin (new)

Erin Harrington (rin4life) | 10 comments I forgot about Vampire Kisses. Those books were awful!

message 377: by Heather (new)

Heather | 243 comments Jennifer, finished Eternal Kiss of Darkness; liked it a lot and just started Bitter..

OK, I'll bite, what is Vampire Kisses about and why everyone hate so?

message 378: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 429 comments Heather wrote: "Jennifer, finished Eternal Kiss of Darkness; liked it a lot and just started Bitter..

I hope you like Bitter! Vampire Kisses is about this girl who is obsessed w/ vampires and then meets one. The idea behind the story is ok, but the characters are very one dimensional and the heroine is so wimpy.

message 379: by Heather (new)

Heather | 243 comments Wow, kinda sounds a little like ... Twilight?? Eh? Well, I got into Bitter at work and will continue to read it when it gets quiet at work..

message 380: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (thesa) | 22 comments I'm probably in the minority here, but I could not get through the first book of the Sookie Stackhouse series. I don't care for the writing style or setting.

However, I do love the BDB series. I know those few who do not like that series say they can't stand the writing, but for me, it's what makes it a great series. I love the banter and the street slang. I think it is difficult to read for those who cannot appreciate the modern street slang.

After reading Ward's Insider Guide, I think she is brilliant! She obviously has a dark and twisted side, but it makes for a unique reading experience. I love how each brother's character develops with each book, and how she takes readers through each brother's own trials and tribulations. I also like that the romance of each book is different and doesn't follow a pattern.

I couldn't get through the first Sookie Stackhouse novel either!

message 382: by Heather (new)

Heather | 243 comments Theresa/Erin, a friend of mine couldn't get into the Stackhouse series. Curious, why exactly? Another friend reads the series but can't stand the author's style of writing..

message 383: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Aug 17, 2010 01:07AM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I was able to get through the first Sookie book but it wasn't enough for me to want to keep going.

Maybe it is the style of writing. Maybe it was just that I didn't find much to like about Sookie (and the name drives me crazy too, which is silly).

I don't mind shallow heroines that grow with the series, but there was something about this particular heroine that made me not want to go on the journey with her.

It's not uncommon to have a heroine start annoying and turn into a likeable character, but I just couldn't warm up to Sookie. Two series that handled the transition much better were Moning's Fever series and Vincent's Shifter series. Both of those started off like Sookie, but had me at least interested/invested by the time I finished the first book.

Snap. Hate stookie Stackhouse with a passion. t's such an effort to get through. I read 2-4, and said "no more"

message 385: by Erin (new)

Erin Harrington (rin4life) | 10 comments I watched the first season of true blood first and it ruined the ending. I was tempted to just skip to the second one but then I read some spoilers online about Bill leaving her and I was like I don't want to read about that. I also read online that the series gets worse as it goes on.

I don't hate Sookie but I didn't find the story very engrossing. I'd give it another try but there are so many other good books out there

message 386: by Mairead (new)

Mairead | 164 comments I only like Eric. Fact. The ftact that the third and fourth were primarily about him made them tolerable. Bill's such a wet drip. I love the show though. It's great.

message 387: by Heather (new)

Heather | 243 comments Stacia/Erin, got ya and I understand. I will stick with the series cause I put so much effort into reading them. I've enjoyed True Blood but that's it, and I am really not liking Season 3; way too dark for my taste, not to mention that Bell is messing up all the stories which would confuse someone if they haven't read the series or at least a few of the books..

message 388: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (thesa) | 22 comments I always try to keep an open mind when I try different series, because I know every author has different writing styles, different experiences & different beliefs. I try to keep in mind that each series is a different world and I try not to compare them to other books. But for some reason, I just could not get through the 1st Stackhouse book. I did watch the first season of True Blood and really liked it, so it probably really is mostly the writing style and some of what Stacia said.

The only other book that I could not finish is Diana Gabaldon's Lord John book. She is a brilliant writer and I LOVE her Outlander series, but the Lord John books are too dry for my taste.

message 389: by Lisa264544 (new)

Lisa264544 | 46 comments The Little Goddess series (Lane) was awful. The writing was amateurish, the sex scenes were boring instead of hot and the main female character was about as unlikeable as any I've read. The scenes were like one huge run on sentence-they went on and on and on. Wordy is was an understatement. Also did not care for the Monere series. Too many partners for the lead female character who was not as bad as the Goddess character, but not too far off.

message 390: by Jana (new)

Jana Hopkins | 21 comments I have to say that the worst book I have ever read is L.A.Banks, Minion which is part of Vampire Huntress Legend series. This is the only book in my entire 32 years of reading a ton of books that I could not finish.

I tried 3 times and finally pitched the book. Not sure if it is just this first book, but I will not be attempting to read any other LA Banks books in my near future.

Funny you should mention the Vampire Huntress. I was just talking to a friend of mine about how bad this series was. I made it through two books before giving up on the series. I'm not African-American, but I thought author went overboard on the slang. A couple of my friends, who ARE African-American commented on the over use of slang.

message 392: by Ronnie (new)

Ronnie (hathor422) | 28 comments I see a few books here that I agree on, and some I dont. The Yasmine Galenorm series, Lord knows I wanted to love it, but I just couldn't get into it. I went so far as to read the first 3 books before I just gave up. House of Night, I started out loving them, but my interest has fallen so much, that I'm only reading them because I don't want to leave a series that I have started. L.A. Banks Vampire Huntress series: I tried numerous times to get invested in it because black authors in this genre are very few. I tried to support Mrs. Banks, but I just couldn't get into them. Now her werewolf series is a lot better.
Through The Veil by Shiloh Walker, I could not make it past the third chapter. Out of the hundreds of books I've read, only twice have I abandoned a book with out finishing it. I couldn't give that book away and I tried. The second book I couldn't finish was Nightwalker by Jocelynn Drake. I don't know, maybe it was just me and I need to try again, but I couldn't do it.

I actually LOVE the Lynsay Sands series, I have every one so far. And I love the Monere series by Sunny. I like the different take on vampires that Melissa De La Cruz's Blue Blood series offers.

I also gave up on Nightwalker. Just couldn't get into it. It's good to know that L.A. Banks' werewolf series is better. I have hesitant to read the first book.

I like the Blue Bloods series too because the vampires are unique. However, her writing style isn't the best and the 4th book wasn't that good at all.

Weirdly enough, I loved Galenorn's mystery series One Hex of a Wedding is one of them--but her "paranormal" stuff (in parathesis because there is a paranormal element to the mysteries too) just leaves me going "Eh".

Jana Hopkins | 21 comments "Ronnie wrote: The Yasmine Galenorm series, Lord knows I wanted to love it, but I just couldn't get into it."

I enjoyed the first three books, but then they just started to seem like I was reading the same book with a slight twist or something. I have the remaining books in my "someday read shelves" but I am in no hurry to pick them up.

message 397: by Ursamater (new)

Ursamater | 18 comments I like Yasmine Galenorn's stuff--mysteries and the UF series that a lot of folks here don't care for. I like the BDB. I haven't tried the Argeneau series yet. I didn't care for the one of the LA Banks vampire books that I read.

For me it's Twilight. I've gotten through the first book but I'm having a hard time picking up the next one. I'd like to try to read them and "get" the discussion, they have become such a cultural phenomenon. But the plot squicked me out (partly because they are marketed so hard to teenage girls--at least originally) and the writing didn't draw me in--so far. I'll probably give it another shot or two just to be fair.

message 398: by Ronnie (new)

Ronnie (hathor422) | 28 comments Ursamater wrote: "For me it's Twilight..."

I was slow to read the first book. I ignored it and the entire Teen YA scene and read nothing but adult urban fantasies and paranormal romances until I watched Penelope on dvd and saw the preview for Twilight. Well if I watch a movie adaption then I always read the book first.

I bought the ebook and read it in 2 days. By the end of the week I had read the other 2 books that were out, and brought Breaking Dawn the day it was released. I am so totally utterly hooked on everything Twilight now.

Reading Twilight also got me into alot of other ya urban fantasy titles.
