Hi, Logan. Sorry you had trouble locating your comment. I know you will probably find your way around GoodReads in no time. If you want to find your comments, you can also go to your own profile and scroll down to see what comments you have made on different groups.

Welcome to Jane Austen. It sounds like you have a great love of Austen already beginning. The best thing to start might to be to look around our group. Check out all the folders and then the threads within them to see the Jane Austen topics we've discussed over the past. Comment on any of them that interest you because few of our discussions ever really close.

Also, look at the top of our group page here to see the book discussions going on currently and the ones upcoming. I will soon post some information about some movie discussions we will be having. We talk a lot of Austen, but some of our book discussions are not strictly Austen and our movie discussions will include lots of period movies or different kinds.

Your friends may not have heard of Jane Austen but just keep telling them how great her writing is and they will catch on some day! Her writing is really great for understanding how life was in the past and really getting used to reading classic books, as you already know. Once your friends get past seeing that the writing sounds different than modern books, they will see what great stories these are.

Do you like any other classic books? Share more about what you like and other books you are interested in and you will probably get some good discussions going here on our group. You may have some things on your profile, but right now you have it set to private I believe.

Lani (lani14) | 57 comments HI Logan
I found your orginal comment.

Hello fellow Jane Austen members.
My name is Logan Poland and I am 13 years old.
I Love Jane Austen with all of my heart and know every story as if they were my own. So far, I've only read Pride and Predujice and am now reading Sense and Sensibility. Jane Austen keeps me alive in the world known as Middle School. People ask me all the time "Who is Jane Austen?" I look at them with disgust. What would Jane say? And how can people not know who Jane Austen is? It's absurd!
Someday, I hope to be an author as Jane Austen was, and to be remembered forever! But then again, who dosen't?
I found an amazing book that I think all Janeites would LOVE! You would have to buy it, but it's very good. "The Jane Austen Handbook: A Sensible yet Elegant Guide to Her World." By Margaret C. Sullivan. Barnes and Nobles carries it for only $12.20.
For those of which read this book or have read it, please let me know what you think!
Sincerly,
Logan

Welcome
I am new here and still learning my way around here too. I tried to look at your profile and its private. I also suggest you look around, settle in and continue to bring your bright spirit here.

You might check your profile setting again, it seems to still be private. When you select view profile by "anyone" in the settings, are you clicking "save profile settings" at the bottom of that column? You may need to look back at your settings and be sure to do that "save."

Quick comment -- I believe that goodreads always sets account info to private for anyone under 18.

I will comment tomorrow on the rest of your post, Logan! :)

Hey, Logan, check out the group folder "Austen on Film" where we discussed Northanger Abbey. You can add to that discussion, or any others that are still out there. Group members are happy to start up an "old" discussion topic. :)

message 11: by Regine (new)

Regine Hello everyone! I'm here because I love Jane Austen (obviously).

My favorite Jane Austen book would have to be Pride and Prejudice. It's just such a classic. The way the way Austen presents appearance vs. reality, and gosh...who doesn't dream about Mr. Darcy?

I've also enjoyed Northanger Abbey. I loved how Austen ties in the main character's love of ghost stories within the plot. I am making my way through the rest of her books. Can't wait to read more.

Hi Regine!

Would you like to introduce yourself again on the "Newbie Corner" thread? More people will see it there!

But, welcome to the group! Check out our bookshelves and join us in August for a discussion of Persuasion, my favorite! :)

Hi Logan!

I renamed your thread to keep it distinct from the Newbie Corner. I hope you are enjoying being a member of the Jane Austen group. :)

I'm Clara and I'm fifteen. I've read all the Jane Austen books and wish, wish, wish that society could behave itself like people in Jane Austen's time. I'm always so jealous when, for example, it is shocking and absurd that Mrs. Elton calls Mr. Knightley 'Knightley'. Today she would have called him 'Georgie' and less people would be offended. Okay, I'm digressing.
I also like Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, Jane Eyre, the Brontё sisters in general, the Phantom of the Opera, some German musicals and Shakespeare and Harry Potter and all that.
My favourite Jane Austen book changes from time to time. I tend to like Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, and Sense and Sensibility the best. :) The only Jane Austen movie I've seen is the Laurence Olivier (<3) version of P+P and part of something of Emma.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Clara. I like your login name; it's a lovely song. People are very familiar these days. My daughter is 16, and I made her address people as Mrs. Jones, or whatever. But, it was really difficult, as people didn't like her to. They would always insist on their first names.

I really like Phantom of the Opera, too. It's a good mystery! Which German musicals do you like? I don't know that I have read any.

I like that version of P&P, too. It was my first exposure to Austen as well--long before I read any of the books. Now my favorite version is the 2005 version (which makes Jeannette and me somewhat of a novelty in this group. LOL!).

Welcome to the group!

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you!
There's a musical based on Rebecca by DuMaurier and another about the life of the Empress Elisabeth. I find it a very good way to study German.
I almost want to see more of the movies, but I'm slightly afraid it will ruin my mental perceptions of the books. I really liked the movie I saw, though.
:)

Dear Clair, if you are a purist, most movies will probably annoy you. Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility is a safe bet. (Though I must say that while Emma Thompson was phenomenal, I think she was a bit too old to play Eleanor.) With much respect to Jenny and Jeanette ;), I don't think you'll care for the 2005 P&P, but the 1995 BBC miniseries is also a safe bet! I too loved Laurence Olivier P&P, how can you not!? :) Oh, and Emma with Gwenyth Paltrow was good too. I haven't seen all versions of all the movies, so that is what I feel comfortable recommending from a purist perspective.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Clair, you could read the books and then watch the movies. All of them that I have seen have been very enjoyable, even the 2005 movie that everyone scorns. All of the screen adaptations, as M mentions, "adjust" the story to fit the director's vision, even Ang Lee changed some things. The cast was excellent in that movie!

So, enjoy the books and whichever movies you end up watching! I can never get enough of either the books or the films!

One more question: Are you watching these German musicals or reading them? I speak German, so I am curious about what you are doing. :)

Samantha (samanthan) | 25 comments I just have to say I love the group photo from Bright Star! That's such a great movie and a beautiful picture.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Glad you like it. There is a discussion right now about the movie, if you would like to join in.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm a bit of a purist. :) I think I'll check out the version of Sense and Sensibility sometime. Thank you for the recommendation, :)
I'm mostly watching the German musicals, but I look up the lyrics and examine them so that I know exactly what's happening. I also try to find books and movies in German, with less luck, but I'm getting better, and I'm taking German in school. I don't think that last sentence followed at all, but . . . yeah. Danke für Ihre . . . ich weiss nicht . . . Freundlichkeit? Never mind . . . okay, I'm officially done rambling now.

message 27: by Thakshi (new)

Thakshi Jayasinghe | 1 comments Hey Logan..So, about myself:
I'm 23 years old and from Sri Lanka and by the time I was like 14 I'd read all of Jane Austen's novels. During the subsequent 9 years I've reread all of them at least 3 times.

My absolute favourite would definitely be Emma. I just LOVE the social commentary and the subtlety of the way JA pokes fun at society!! A close second would be Pride & Prejudice, then Sense & Sensibility.
I didn't really like Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey or Persuasion as much as the first 3...maybe because I didn't like the heroines as much (?).

message 28: by Gemma (new)

Gemma | 25 comments Hello, Logan!
Well, I'm 18 years old, and I got into Jane about a year ago when I read Pride and Prejudice. I've read all of her novels since then and enjoyed them all, but P&P is still my favorite. I've seen the 2005 film adaptation (and adored it) and Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility (loved that one, too), but I have yet to see Gwenyth Paltrow as Emma. I tried to get my older sister to read it, but she gave up only a few pages into it when she found out it was the inspiration for the movie Clueless (if Jane knew about that, I wonder what she'd say, don't you?).

message 29: by Pragya Tiwari (new)

Pragya Tiwari | 2 comments Hey Logan!
I started reading Jane Austen when I was 14 years old..And obviously the first one was Pride and Prejudice...I loved it then. And it WAS my favorite. But as I read on I found out that there was something more in the Persuasion than the sensibility of Lizzy that people admire...It was the closeness to reality. Anne Elliot's life was not at all like Lizzy...not every one gets to marry someone as rich as Darcy..yet she had found her true love, and even after so many years of separation, finally had him. She was not to be the mistress of a wealthy man, and even had the danger of losing him but she had faith in him and was content with her life with him!
And I also agree with Gemma's sister that Emma is the inspiration for Clueless and there's an Indian movie just about to be released, inspired from Emma "Aisha" which makes you feel that more strongly!
P&P is one of my favorite movies but as far as books are concerned, Persuasion is my favorite.

message 30: by Els (new)

Els (Elss) | 10 comments I love Pride and Predjudice, it's a true classic and I am totally in love with Mr.Darcey. But I also love Emma because it is such a good feeling book. Plus Mr Knightly is lovely too :)

message 31: by Steve (new)

Steve (slabrecque) | 4 comments Pride and Prejudice is definitely my favorite, and I guess you could say I have a man-crush on Mr. Darcy. Colin Firth is perfect in the BBC mini series.

My true love has to be Lizzie though, she is such a strong willed person and yet she is so vulnerable at times. The mix is really quite appealing.

Miss Silvertongue (misssilvertongue) | 2 comments Definitely Pride and Prejudice. I absolutely loved it. It gave me a totally different perspective of classics. Sense and Sensibility is alright but you can't go past P&P. :)

message 33: by Leshawn (last edited Aug 16, 2010 03:24AM) (new)

Leshawn | 25 comments "Pride and Prejudice" is my favorite as well! No matter how many times I re-read it, I find something new each time! It is so perfectly written! Wonderful character and plot development, great wit and epiphanies about human nature and such a lovely pacing...oh and how perfect is the title!

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Duanur awww Pride and Prejudice is just amazing!! *-*

message 38: by Bu (new)

Bu (bu72) I can't tell. But my least favourite ones are precisely Persuasion and Emma...
Hmm the first one I read was Pride and Prejudice, way back then.
Maybe I do have a favourite and it's Mansfield Park.
Yes, Mansfield Park :)

message 39: by Regine (new)

Regine Hey Logan!

My favourite Jane Austin book would have to be Pride and Prejudice. I think that Liz Bennet just makes the perfect heroine. It's witty and charming, but it speaks volumes about Austen's perception of social class, the situation of women, and first impressions.

I've also read Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey. Both of them are great. Again, they're both brimming to the top with social commentary. What makes Northanger Abbey so much fun is that Austen actually wrote it as a parody to the gothic literature that was coming out.

message 40: by Hope (new)

Hope | 35 comments Hi Logan!

My favorite Jane Austen book is Persuasion. I really like the story line and the characters. I also loved the BBC movie version of it. It's my kind of story.

I have also read Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Northanger Abbey. I've read about half of Emma, but I started it at the wrong time. I really like all of the books that I have read, but I think that Persuasion will always be my favorite.

message 41: by Birdie (last edited Aug 29, 2010 09:16AM) (new)

Birdie | 24 comments Hi Logan, I just joined this forum. Thank you for your recommendation of "The Jane Austen Handbook: A Sensible yet Elegant Guide to Her World." I may just have to add that to my library!

As to my favorite Austen, and all are standout pieces of literature that it's hard to pick just one, it is Persuasion, the second Austen novel I ever read after Pride and Prejudice. Persuasion doesn't have the joie de vivre of Pride and Prejudice, but I find it more accessible in its quiet contemplation of missed opportunities and familial bonds.

Mansfield Park would have to be a close second. It's one I appreciate the more I read it.

One Austen I haven't read yet is Sense and Sensibility and I must do something about that soon. :)

message 42: by Robin (last edited Aug 30, 2010 05:03PM) (new)

Robin | 12 comments Hello all!

I love Jane Austen's books (duh) for their great story lines, memorable characters, and that wonderful glimpse into the Regency world. I too wish there was more respect in today's society. My favorite books are "Sense and Sensibility" and "Emma." I enjoyed "Northanger Abbey" for its satire of gothic novels. Surprisingly, I have never read P&P (gasp I KNOW!). I had started it while in college but my copy disappeared somewhere when I moved out.

As you can tell by my profile picture, the 1996 version of "Emma" with the drool worthy Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightley is my favorite Austen adaption, though I do love Emma Thompson's S&S and the 2007 "Northanger Abbey" with Felicity Jones.

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I like Pride and Prejudice, I am currently reading it.

message 44: by chinami (new)

chinami Pride and Prejudice, no second thoughts.

message 45: by Rupanjana (new)

Rupanjana | 1 comments Pride and Prejudice. Will always remain my favourite. I read it when i was 13 and have completed emma, mansfield park and northanger abbey in the intervening 3 yrs. I love everything about the book and Mr.Darcy is my ultimate fantasy hero along with rhett from gone with the wind. Emma comes a close second.

message 46: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Yes, Rhett is a pretty substantial fella, I agree Pride and Prejudice is my favorite. I have tried to get into the others but there is something about P & P that is just the right kind of read.

message 47: by P. (new)

P. Well, this can change, can't it. My favorite used to be 'Persuasion' but has turned of late to Emma. I was inspired to begin another read after the fine mini-series on PBS. Emma is often not well liked [as you probably know Austen said as much] but I see that wonderful sense of 'over-hearing' [a tenant of the H. Bloom 'Shakespeare: Invention of the Human [approx recall here] which I find very interesting in Emma herself. So, viva la Emma!

message 48: by Gary (new)

Gary | 8 comments Hello all,
I find with Austen novels that my favourite is always the one I have just re-read. If forced to declare I would vote for Pride And Prejudice for the wonderful characters, involving plot and the moral points made.

Hi Gary! I think your saying your favorite Austen novel is the one you just re-read is very true. I think Persuasion is still my favorite but Emma is right there. But in my much younger days, I really disliked Emma and thought she was an immature twit. Now I find her one of Austen's most engaging heroines (after Lizzy Bennett, of course).
